Admittedly, I haven't read EVERY single one of these replies BUT has anyone else seen the cover pic of a white boxer on the latest Drs. Foster & Smith catalog? He/she is absolutely adorable! I'll post the picture under "chipper" if anyone's interested. My next boxer will be a white one (deaf or not!) I swear!

white ...who care's..not me..lol

well i have read all of these post's on this subject,
and i went and done some digging for my self ..
so this is what i have found out about white dog's and being deaf or blind...
hope you all enjoy.....

Other issues to be considered with the white Boxer gene include:
(1 ) Some of the white pups, with little or no pigment in their skin, must be kept out of the sun because they sunburn. This is similar to a condition observed in Collies which is called "Collie nose."
(2) A certain percentage of the white Boxer puppies are deaf in either one or both ears. In Boxers and other breeds ( Bull Terriers, Dalmatians, Great Danes, Collies, Shetland Sheep Dogs, etc.) in which deaf animals sometimes occur, it is known that deafness results when the cells of the skin lining the ear canals lack pigment.[1]
(3) It has been reported that some white Boxer puppies may be blind, however, the are no sound statistics to establish this as a severe problem as this condition appears to occur at a very low frequency in the Boxer.

As a result of these observations, breeders are encouraged not to use the white Boxer in their breeding programs. A breeder may choose to place white puppies in homes as companion animals. But the practice of placing white puppies should be done carefully. A responsible breeder should require that any white or mismarked puppy must be spayed or castrated if placed as a companion animal.

ABC policy strictly forbids registering white Boxers with the American Kennel Club, as well as selling white Boxers or breeding white Boxers. The ABC also requires that white puppies not be included in the count on the AKC litter application form. The ABC has never condoned or encouraged the culling of white puppies

White Boxers have been a part of our breed's history from the very beginning. The introduction of the all-white gene into the Boxer gene pool is often blamed on early crosses to a white English Bulldog in the 1890s, yet white Boxers existed long before the crosses to the Bulldog were made (as demonstrated by a photo of a white Boxer from 1870 that was killed while being with his master in the Franco-German war of 1870/71[2]).

White Boxers were accepted for registration and breeding by the German club up to 1925. They were banned then because the club viewed the Boxer as a guard dog and white unacceptable for that work. Any physical problems related to the white gene were not found until much later. Other than the physical problems associated with the white gene, white Boxers are exactly the same in temperament and structure as their pigmented siblings

well i hope u all enjoyed the read ..
coz i did .. so i just had to let you all read

I also gained alot of information from the site you quote, but I have to say that ABC may not want AKC to reg whites but they do everyday and they are listed in the liter reg.
have a great day

One thing to remember about the ABC information on white Boxers is the ABC agenda. The ABC does not allow registration or breeding of white Boxers, and so their propaganda will quietly promote this agenda without actually lying.

Yes, white Boxers are at more of a risk for sunburn. So are Nordic people. That is just common sense. I don't think (although I haven't really looked) this is the same as Collie Nose, though.

Yes, white Boxers are more prone to deafness due to a lack of pigmentation in the inner ear. No problem with that statement.

This is the one that gets me. "It has been reported that some white Boxer puppies may be blind." I am here to report that some colored Boxer puppies may be blind. There is absolutely nothing that indicates blindness is connected to the white coloring in Boxers. (It is shown to be linked to the merle gene in Collies, but Boxers do not carry the merle gene.)

And certainly some white Boxers are registered, because not all breeders follow the ABC Code of Ethics. All members of the ABC or member clubs, however, must follow the ABC CoE, so most of the show/performance breeders do not register their whites.

hey julie:) yep your right.
all white dogs are prone to sunburn, as I stated in one of my post Dempsey my (white) male gets sprayed w/sunscreen before he goes out to play ,it gets very hot here, but I really think he gets more dirt than sun lol.

And yes members of the ABC do not want nor do they approve of whites being reg but oh well there loss.... no need for me to express myself on that one again, I think I have made my self clear in the past about how I feel. But akc reg them everyday all day 24/7...

And you are right blindness is not prone to whites, but I will never underestimate the power of people, you just never know whats going be laid on the white boxer next..

ok everyone one have a Great day and hug your dog.....

I have only came across one white boxer and it was neither deaf nor blind. I THINK i'm interested in owning a white boxer, i'm just a bit skeptical on the possible setbacks.
Thanks for the thread.

ATOM , well yes setbacks can be a problem but there can be setbacks in any breed, what ever breed, color use choose u should make sure it is from a responible breeder and the pup has been vet checked and a health cert, and after all that is done , no one will be able to tell you that you will never have problems with the dog. The best way to try to insure that the dog will not have problems is to go through a good breeder and vet ( have the pup checked before yu buy) have the dog checked by a vet on a reg basis use all preventative meds for heartworm, etc.. and give your dog the proper food and exersise, and lots of tlc....
Then ATOM and only then can you hope as your dog grows older that it will not contract some bad disease and become blind, deaf,or god forbid even die.
I guess if you are getting a dog to be a companion and to gain unconditional love like you have never had a setback like being deaf would be a small price to pay.
I do think that a boxer of any color would be a great choice.
I have a deaf boxer ATOM and her being deaf has never been a fault in her breed as I see it, she is as smart as the rest and gives alot of love.
But whatever choice you make please go through a good breeder please do yur homework on the person.
thanks have a great day.
