I’m new to this forum and as such don’t feel it is yet my place to offer my thoughts at such a sensitive time. But I’m disturbed to see you expressing so much guilt. Dogs are generous souls by nature and boxers are among the finest of their kind. They relish nothing so much as seeing their family safe and happy. One thing they certainly don’t have time for is apportioning blame to others. Guilt has no currency in their world. And neither should it in yours.

Impossible as it to believe right now the time will come when you’ll be telling us all stories about your beloved Harley. You’ll think back and laugh and smile and sometimes choke back a tear or two. Just try, if you can, not to cloud those memories with such an unnecessary emotion. Ask yourself this - would Harley want you to feel this way? If I know boxers, I think I know the answer. And I think you do, too.

Im so sorry to hear about your baby.

I too have a boy with heart disease and I know I will face this some day.

You could not have done any more for your baby, you loved him and cuddled him and loved him some more. Just remember he will look over you always and wag his stump, and when your sad and crying, he will be watching and trying to lick those tears away.

Lots and lots of love to you

Please don't feel guilty, Harley knew he was loved. My Emma died this week and I was sleeping with her, and I still feel quilty, that maybe there was something I should have done, should have heard something, some kind of sign. It is very hard, but we will make it through it. Harley spent his last day being with his best friend doing the things he loved. Try to keep that in mind, I know it is hard, but that is what I'm trying to do.

My prayers and thoughts are with you.

Jen,

I am so sorry for your loss.

Our Carley passed away in my arms, in the car, as my husband and I were frantically trying to get her to a vet. I too, felt guilty. Not because I wasn't there, but because I feared she sensed our panic and therefore, did not go peacefully. I was assured by our vet that that was not the case. Harley went peacefully in his sleep. He was not afraid, he just went to sleep.

Like the others have said, in time, your sorrow will be replaced with the loving memories of your baby and friend, Harley.

Hugs,
Kim

So so sorry for your loss. Please know that your boy knew how you loved him and, as others have said, I imagine he went peacefully in his sleep-and that is what you need to believe as well. This grief is hard enough without beating youself up. I lost my girl to BCM last Feb and same thing-she was fine, left her in the car to run in to do an errand and came out of the store and she was gone. I tortured myself that she was alone but a good friend told me that dogs do not have the fear we have and the love we have for them is always with them. Your boy would never "think" he was abandoned and he was not! He is boing boxer burn with my Ailis now and all the other boxer angels. May sweet memories comfort you... and be kind to yourself

I'm new to this board, but I can't begin to express the sorrow I feel for you. We lost our black lab, JD, without warning like that to gastric torsion in September, so I understand everything you are going through. The guilty feeling is normal, but as others have stated, misplaced. Rest assured that you did everything possible to make Harley's stay here a wonderful one and he knows that still. It will be rough going for a little while, but time will heal your hurt, honest. At least 98% of the way, anyway - you'll always have that little bit of sadness, I think. At least I do - I don't think I'll ever be able to bring myself to read Marley and Me, for example. My thoughts are with you both, and trust me, it will get better.

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. I know your pain is great, but in time the pain will lessen and you will smile and laugh when you think of Harley. Don't feel guilty about his passing, feel blessed that you were able to share your life with such a wonderful companion and know that you gave him unconditional love and a wonderful life.

Hugs from Winston and me.

Run free, Harley angelicon

Thank you one and all for your replies. They mean SO MUCH to me at this terrible time. Even though it's only been 6 days..........I still keep thinking Im going to see his head (among his many nicknames......Mr.Head was one of them) peak from behind a corner.........or hear his footsteps (tick-ticking) along the floor. It still surreal to me that he's gone. I cannot believe how quiet and empty my house feels (even though I have a 2.5yr old child). Harley's blankets and toys and food and everything...........right where we left them. I cant bear to move anything. His blankets smell of him. I used to tell him he stunk of cheetohs/fritos...........but I love that smell now. And everywhere I go........I see boxers. I NEVER hardly see boxers on the street. All of a sudden, they're everywhere! One popped it's head out of a car window next to me today. I cant help but think maybe it's some kind of sign. Who knows? I just miss him sooooo much and ache so badly. I didnt think I'd feel this lonely.......but I do :(
