I "ruined their value" (vent)

I am so sick and tired of people telling me how "stupid" I am for neutering my boys instead of using them as puppy factories.

Today we had company. A guy that we have been friends with for several years. He now lives out of town and we rarely see him. Well, today was his first time meeting both of my boys. He loved them both. He loved their faces, their enthusiasm, their markings, etc.

After playing with them for a little while, he asked me where I got them. I told him from a breeder. He then asked how much they were, I told him they were $850 each. This of course was followed by the normal question.. "are you going to breed them"?? When I told him no they were already neutered I thought his eyes were going to pop out of his head!! He looked at me for a few seconds and then at the dogs, then he said "wow, you really ruined their value!!".

I was already upset with this remark, but I just had to ask him what he meant by this. His explanation was since I spent so much for them, they should've worked to get me my money back. Besides, they'd make some nice pups. Now I was doing all I could to bite my tongue and not say something that I regretted. I just excused myself and went to get a drink. When I came back into the room the topic had already changed so I wasn't about to bring it back up.

I try not to let these kind of things bother me, but they always do. Since I had this "talk" with him this afternoon, I keep replaying it in my mind. I take my responsibility as a pet owner seriously and by neutering them, I'm doing what I feel is right for them and their health. If I was a breeder and purchased these dogs to better my line it would be one thing, but I went into this knowing that all I wanted was a companion. I wish some people would just keep these kinds of remarks to themselves. I really do...

Sorry, I had to vent. This has been bugging me for hours now and I need to get it off my chest with other people who've been in this situation before.

Ehhh it makes me mad when they say this kind of thing. I havent had that many comments said to me about it but my friend who has a boxer boy who is I believe about 9 months old or so and He is just such a cutie and everyone loves him. Her main problem is that whenever she takes him out to a dog park or on walks everyone always asks if she is going to breed him because they have a female or know someone who has a female. She just tells them shes not interested & yep shes got that comment about "You spent that much on your dog and your not even going to breed him! " I guess thats all they see the dog as.:(

That is terrible. My dog's "value" is how happy he makes me with his wiggle butt, and the way that I forget about my bad day when he looks at me with those big brown eyes and gives me a woo woo.

You didn't "ruin" anything. You took a step to ensure him a happier, and healthier life.

Some people

Unfortunately, lots of peoples' motivation is the almighty dollar. Given that premise, you can see how they would think that neutering an expensive purebred dog would be throwing money down the toilet. People need to be educated. Maybe you could prepare a handout sheet, in a friendly, informative tone, that you could just keep in your purse for such a moment, stating why it's healthier to spay and neuter your pet, and all the reasons why Boxers shouldn't be indiscriminately bred, and when you get this dumb comment again, say, "Just a moment, I have something you might find interesting..." and give it to them. And the last line could be something like, "I have so much love and respect for this breed that I feel that breeding should be left to true Boxer experts."

And at least you've tried, and maybe you can actually make a difference in a small way. :) Of course, there will always be the morons who don't care or don't want to know. Let them go. You can't change the world. I know it's frustrating!

And Debbie, you are so right - adding years of healthy life to our furbabies' lives is definitely an increase in value for us!

I agree with Gibsmom..the value of my dogs has nothing to do with their earning capabilities as puppy factories.
I value my dogs for the way they give me unconditional love, the way they can always make me smile and the joy they bring to my life with their big expressive eyes, wiggly bums, sloppy kisses and all the other wonderful things they do!

That's what we should tell these horrible people that think one should recoup the cost of buying a boxer.

Sometimes, my very opinionated father feels the need to tell me that his friends unneutered male rotties get along fine and that I was wrong to neuter my boys. Whenever he does this, I kindly remind him that two less sets of "kiwis" are much better than dogs made one dimensional by auto while chasing "the scent" or prostate cancer. My friend and her husband went 'round and 'round about neutering his dobie, but when the prostate swelled and caused penile bleeding because he caught wind of a female, the argument was over. It sounds like your friend puts too much value on having a set...maybe it's a compensation issue for him!:D

I hope he never has kids! Some people are just ignorant. We just have to stand taller and feel sorry for these people.

What an ignorant idiot smashicon Does this jerk believe a woman loses her "value" after menopause or a man loses his "value" if he has prostate problems! His attitude stinks - he thinks because there is money involved we should "get our monies worth" back!! Our furbabies are not stock investments...our furbabies "value" isn't based on their ability to reproduce. They are valuable to us as loving, devoted family members as we are to them.
