This is so very, very true. It is so easy to get frustrated when people say things that to us come across as "stupid," but it's really important to remember that being ignorant about something does not make a person stupid. I come from a family that really and truly treats our dogs like family members - they get the best health care, food, toys, sleep in our beds, etc. But none of them would even know what the term "backyard breeder" means, and I didn't either until I got involved with rescue. It's not always possible, but when I encounter these seemingly "stupid" remarks, I try to take advantage of the opportunity to help people learn.

Now getting back to the original post, I'm sure I would also have a hard time dealing with someone who expects me to measure the "value" of my dog by the amount of money he can bring in, but maybe it's another case of lack of information.

I have to say that was big of you to get up & walk out of the room & bite your tongue because I would have ripped him a new one  I just don't understand the ingorance of some people and how money can influence their whole being.
A dog's value has nothing to do with making puppies to sell and we all know that. I've always told everyone that's said something to me about breeding Harley & Zoe together was that I wouldn't want to put them (mainly her) through that just for the money. It's not worth the risks to me.

This makes me mad too!

I get remarks about Bella haveing her tail off. People dont understand that this is for their own good and I hate having to explain things! Bella actually had her tail off when I got her and even if she didnt, I would have had it done.

These judgemental people, who lets face it dont know a thing about our furbabies should SHUT UP!

 How much "value" did you really lose?

I have had several people over the years ask me why I would neuter/spay such a valuable animal (every animal cat or dog I have ever owned has been altered). I always tell them that I can't afford to breed. What does that mean is the next question. To which I answer: cost of health testing, cost of care and support for having several dogs, cost of having to find a stud or bitch, cost of pre-natal care for mom, cost of missing work to be with her when the time comes, what if there is an emergency $$$!, cost of puppy care for normal healthy pups (which we know there is no guarantee for), and cost for registration and my time and effort to find decent homes for each pup. After all is said & done I would probably be in the hole several hundred per pup! By the time I have said this most people have no clue how to respond and usually mumble something about having no idea how much went into breeding. I am happy with the one thing I have from my pups that I consider invaluable: unconditional love!

Please read and reply - important to me!!!

What a RELIEF!!!! I am SOOOOO glad to have found this thread! I originally applied to several boxer rescues to adopt a boxer, and because of my current situation (THEN) they didn't think I would be a suitable placement home. Unfortunately, they underestimated my DESIRE, COMMITMENT, and LOVE for the breed, and there were some very deserving boxers who didn't get a home with me when they could have been Wonderfully happy.

In the meantime, I found a breeder and purchased a boxer puppy. She's EXACTLY what I wanted, female, fawn, a little white on her chest, some on her toes, and the runt of the litter (NOT that Looks were my criteria for a puppy), but I was trying to replace a boxer that my EX MADE me give away several years ago.

Well, I called this breeder, and after describing what I was looking for, he told me he had only one puppy left, and she fit my description PERFECTLY!!!

I knew God had placed this special puppy with me for a reason. She is now eight months old, my living situation has changed, and she is so WONDERFULLY provided for, I'm suprised everyone on this forum can't smell her because she is spoiled so rotten!!!

My point is, I was afraid to admit to everyone here at BW that I had PURCHASED my puppy from a breeder, since the humane thing is adopting from a rescue or shelter. It's reassuring to learn that others have purchased from breeders and altered their animals because they have only one purpose in life - to be a MEMBER OF THE FAMILY - not a "Cash Cow" or "Breeding Mill" to make money.

GRRRRR! The thought makes me ill! Trixxie is the BEST and most faithful friend, buddy, and has given me support through one of the toughest times of my life - leaving my fieonce after 13 years. Trixxie was always there...happy to see me - wooo wooo'ing when I needed a laugh, waggeling her butt up to her ears (kidney beaning) everytime she sees me, and basically loving me unconditionally - the things I could never get from my EX.

God puts angels in four legged bodies, and He brought me mine in Trixxie.

Bless everyone who loves boxers the way I do, and thanks for listening to me ramble...I've been trying to share these feelings with my girlfriends, but they just don't get it...maybe someone here will!

Humbly,

Linda & Trixxie

When anyone makes those "oh, you could have made so much money" comments, I say "oh, you want to talk about money, let's talk about how much money my rescue group spends in medical bills because there are too many people who don't take care of their purebred dogs they purchase"
I can't understand why someone pays $350-800 for a dog and then neglects, abuses, discards.........

Don't be ashamed, Linda...

It is very unfortunate that I have known perfectly suitable parents who have been given the run-around by rescue organizations. My husband and I tried to adopt 2 different dogs: one, a lab who wanted to swim so badly he scaled the side of the above ground pool (totally unacceptable, could not cope with a drowned dog), the other, a boxer, who a few hours after we went to see him, attacked a vet tech (where he was being fostered) and was put down. After that, my husband and I decided that we wanted to start fresh, with a puppy. Our situation is similar to yours...he called a breeder he had heard of, she had one puppy left, and we brought our angel, Mugsy, home 6 days after our wedding.
My family always rescued dogs--even saved a mixed breed from parvo. Imagine that! I too, felt badly that we had purchased, but then our chance came when Shadow needed a foster home and wound up staying. So now we have 2 beautiful boys.
Just as God brought you Trixxie, you can be assured that when another dog needs you, and the time is right, he will send it to you.
You never have to worry about people not "getting it" here!

Also, foxboxchic--I like your response!

Bigears -

Thanks for the words of encouragement! I know I've give Trixxie a GREAT home, and would have been wonderful for the rescues I was looking at too, but God has his plans, even for the four footed of us!

It's great knowing there are people who understand and don't judge - THANKS!

Rachel, Oliver & Lucy,

Thank you for your generous words of encouragement! This post has really made me feel better about what I did. Yes, I do DEARLY love Trixxie and would do anything in the world for her. And, yes, once she gets older (I don't dare say "through the puppy stage," because we all know boxers never progress through that!) and my fieonce build our house on the 8 acres we own, I'll be able to not only adopt, but possibly foster too!

I truly was feeling badly, but the caring souls here at BW have really helped me see that I am doing the right thing for me, Trixxie, and the future boxers in my life!

We love you guys!!!

Puppy hugs from Trixxie, and warm thanks from me!

I now have a four footed, prime example of why "stupid" people should alter their dogs instead of thinking they can make a ton of money off of them. When in truth they don't have a clue as to what they are doing to the breed! My prime example's name is Titan. We love him dearly as he is, but one look at him is all it takes to see what irresponsible breeding causes. His nose is to long, his ears are to long, he still has his tail, dew claws, and was put out in a dirty, muddy barn lot to fend for himself, along with 6 siblings!!! GRRRRR, I'm on a roll. People infuriate me!!!
Call me "stupid", but my pets are altered.
