If anyone has read any of my recent posts, I am having severe housetraining problems with my dog. She is almost a year now and I am at my wits end with this issue. I was happy because she hadent gone in the house for about 3-4 days, then yesterday she went 3 times in the house! Others I speak with tell me they let take their dog out maybe 4 times a day. My dog, I take her out like 10 or she will go in the house and she STILL has accidents all over. She doesnt just go in the same spot, it is anywhere. Yesterday when I got home I took her out , she did #1 and #2. Then about 15 minutes later she did #2 in the house. This was about 4:00 and she hadent eaten since 8:00 am. Then last night my husband and I were laying on the bed and before I knew it she peed right on it. She sleeps in the bed with us so I dont understand. I dont give her food and water all teh tijme so I dont understand the problem. This dog goes to teh bathroom more than any dog I know. Is there a possibility that I am taking her out too much? Everyone I talk to tels me it sound like a obedience thing. Should I crate her all day and take her out only to use teh bathroom, do that for liek a week and see if that works? I dont know what else to try, Ive tried the bell, that didnt work. What else can I do?????????????????????????????????

Poor girl, you must be at incredibly frustrated! That doesn't sound fun to me at all :( Assuming you've checked for bladder problems with your vet, I think your comment about the crate is right. Go back to crating your girl most of the time. Take her outside regularly and wait until she pees. Praise her lavishly (which I'm sure you're already doing) and take her back in the house to the crate. She needs to learn that inside is NEVER for peeing. It's also troublesome that she has probably left enough pee and poop scent inside the house that she gets the signal it's okay to go there. They are very sensitive to that scent even though it won't be noticeable to you so all that evidence needs to be removed. Now that she has this habit, you need to change her routine for a long enough period of time so that she gets the new habit of going outside only to pee and poop. So, I would say, use the crate she realizes her freedom will be curtailed as long as she continues to go inside the house.

Peeing that many times doesn't sound at all the norm to me. Scrapper goes out maybe 2 -3X during the daytime, once in the AM when he wakes up, and then once in the afternoon; one more at bedtime. It sounds like she CAN go that long (the 3-4 day period you spoke of); she needs to get the habit of doing so. Just one last thought, have you asked your vet if this could be a hormonal or physical problem (muscle weakness or something) other than a UTI? Sorry, for wandering, just thinking as I write. Best wishes to you -

Have you gone to a vet? It does sound like she is peeing more than normal, so maybe there is a health issue? I know it's frustrating, but please try not to take it out on her! She feels your frustration and she then gets anxious and that only makes the peeing worse.

I have heard other people talk about taking their dogs out and they've done their business (#1 &#2) and then 10 minutes later, gone in the house again! Maybe one of them will offer you advice on this matter!

She needs to be caught in the act so that you can let her know for SURE what she is doing wrong! There is no way for her to interpret it any differently if you catch her while she is peeing or pooing!!!! Try to keep her tethered to you for a week or so. That way you always know where she is! If she starts to look for a spot - Ask her to go potty and then RUSH outside! Praise (I'm sure you've done all this - sorry to be redundant!). If you catch her in the act - Be very disappointed in her telling her NO!! Take her outside and when she finishes outside "YIPEE" What a good dog! This all takes time. She may have learned all this before, but for some reason has changed her mind in how she is supposed to do things. I do think it is a behavioral problem (once we rule out the vet) and that can be changed and she can become the perfect dog for your family! Please don't give up on her. Keep coming here for support and we'll help you all we can!!!

We have been havng the same problem with Lexiss and our puppy, we had her almost completely housebroke (just a few accidents here and there). Then we brought our puppy home and we had to start all over again with BOTH of them!!!

At that time we were living in an apartment and we could not get them to stop going in the house for anything! We thought it had something to do with the scent of them pooping and peeing on the carpet that kept them going in the house but 2 1/2 months ago we moved in to a new house and of course the problem is still there.

They are both in kennels while we are at work and they are fine and when we get home we take them outside, and then about every hour we take them outside to do their business. But they still go in the house, it is most annoying when it is 10 minutes after you just brought them in.

I truely hope you find a solution for the problem I think I have almost exhausted every option. I will let you know if I find a solution, I just hope it is soon.

I think I will try that

I think I will try the crating all day thing except for bathroom time. i feel so bad though leaving her locked up all day, and she lets me know she is miserable by barking non-stop. I guess I will have to try and ignore it. How long do you think i should try it for? I mean, she is almost a year and I cannot even trust her for 10 minutes in the house alone. Do most of yall feed your dogs once or twice a day? Also, my girl is about 11 months, and she still seems kind of skinny to me. When do they usually fill out a little? Is it not till they are older?? Thanks for all the info.

When we first started crating Winnie she would bark non-stop.. we tried ignoring her at first, and putting her in there 15 minutes before we would leave the house, not saying bye and leaving her in there for 10-15 minutes after we would get home and not say hello.. you know, those sorts of things. But as soon as the door would close behind us.. bark-bark-bark-bark...
then i got this book, and it suggested to put her in her crate and 'go out' but wait to hear her bark.. when she does 'burst into the room and give a sharp bang on top of the crate (NOT THE DOG!) and a firm NO!"
We only had to do it a couple times, and now when Winnie gets into her crate she lets out one of those deep sighs that boxers do, plops down and gets to work on her chewy toy.
The more I read on here, the luckier I feel, Winnie was very easy to housebreak, and at 3 1/5 months she rarely has an accident (I think she had one 2 weeks ago)... although she won't 'ask' when she needs to go outside.. she just walks up to the door and stares at it! so we have to know where she is all the time!
i couldn't imagine going through all the frustration for a year!
Winnie does however, pee alot (not as much as your dog mind you) and I asked the vet, he told me that at this age, sometimes their body out grows their bladder - he compared it to kids wetting the bed, and said that it will calm down within a couple months... as their organs and grow spurts start to 'even out'....
Hopefully for you, it's something that simple and easy and not a serious health problem.

My Allie also has "accidents" still in the house and her Crate!

I can relate. I'm having the same type of problem with our female Boxer, Alli. She's now 8 1/2 months old, and still going in the house (keep locked in kitchen when she's allowed out of her crate. However, she continues to go in her crate - both pee and poop. She was doing so well, and then all of the sudden months ago - she started going in her crate. I think it's a behavioral issue because usually she's just taken outside and went, and then as soon as I put her in - she goes again. She doesn't even care if she's laying in it - doesn't phase her.

We also have a male Boxer - same age, Buster. He's a good boy - never goes in his crate (and I know dogs are not supposed to do this, but my other 2 boxers did as well) - however, he still has accidents in the house also if you don't take him out in a timely fashion after eating his meals.

I am also at my witts end with Alli and am being forced to depart with her because my husband just cannot deal with her issues. I'll soon need to find her another home if I cannot turn her around quickly. I've signed us up for obedience training, but not sure if it will help her situation. Any suggestions???

If anyone is looking for a female boxer, and has plenty of time to train - she would be an absolute wonderful pet. She loves children, and is very playful. She's beautiful as well.

Thanks!

Have you heard of bell training?

Lily is 1 yr old and she still has "accidents". :o I just got married 2 months ago and moved into my husband's house and he doesn't appreciate the new designs in the carpet.

On another forum I read about using a bell on the door so the dog can learn to ring it when she wants to go out. One person said her dog learned within a few days to ring the bell.

Well, just today I bought a bell (this time of year, they're not hard to find) so we'll see how it works. By the way, Lily got her picture taken with Santa today!:D

Good luck,
Laura

The one thing Lily does get right is when I say "get busy" she will pee pretty quickly. When it first got cold, I had to take her out and walk to the grass with her. Now, I only have to say it at the door.:)

She hasn't had an "accident" in about a week!!! And she is getting more vocal about needing to go out.appicon

By the way, the bell didn't work for Lily. I think she's afraid of it.

I'm far from a Boxer expert, but it seems we just have to keep trying until we find the method that works for that particular dog.

Keep trying!

mybabyboxer-first of all always keep water down for your dog! My friend kept the water off the floor because her boyfriends dogs were peeing on the floor and they would still pee! It is always necessary to keep fresh water down at all times! Anyway as far as the training thing goes I would crate her at night also not just during the day. That and catch her in the act, I made a "time out spot" for Brit when I was training her. It kinda sounds funny but it worked! When I would find a spot on the floor I would take her by the collar show her the spot and tell her bad girl (she is a very sensitive girl!) then take her to the time out spot (which was next to my tv in a corner) and tell her to "stay" she would stay their until I would say ok then she'd get up and come over to me. Now when I started this I used a leash since she didn't know stay yet but I tell ya it works. Also when I first got Baylee she would pee everywhere (we found out later she had bladder problems) but I kept her on a leash with me for the first few months until she got used to where the door was and what it was used for. I wish you the best of luck!

Jaimie
