I think it is tougher to potty train in the winter months. It took about 7 months for Jake, born Oct 31 2005 a winter time puppy, to go outside consistantly. Jazzy, April 9 2006 a summer puppy, was doing very good at 4 months. ( that's 11 months of potty training) We have a small jingle bell on the door that they ring when they want to go out potty. They both caught on to the bell quickly. In the beginning we had to get to the door fast. They would not or could not wait to go, even for a minute. All of your gear had to be ready to go, like a fireman, slip on shoes, coat, leash, treats in pocket... It was a rough time but with SOME patience and consistancy on our part we made it through. Hang in there!

Yeah, it seems a little harder in the winter. This will be the 3rd puppy I have had as an adult and by far the hardest. We have a bell for him to ring too, but that hasnt caught on yet. I'm more concerned about going outside to potty than ringing the bell at the moment. We have slip on shoes, coats, and treats all by the door, waiting to put on in a hurry :)

Oh blimey, with my 3 boxers I was physically taking them out to toilet for months. It takes a while for them to pick it up. Some are quicker than others. Be patient, he will catch on.

I totally under what you are going through but 11 weeks is still very young. I like you thought that at that age they should have gotten it but it seams that with our cute boxers it takes much, much longer. Rita is 7 months old and has now started pee'ing in her crate again and all over the house so we are back at square one...hang in there...like every one is saying they will get it...(hopefull) lol

So I just went home for lunch and I took him to potty right out of his cage. I ate my lunch and then we played for awhile. We were on the floor playing and all of a sudden he makes a mad dash for the back door. So I follow right behind (I was running also:) ) and he stops and pees right outside the back door. I was "AGHHH, you almost made it!!" I know he knows where he is SUPPOSED to go :)

I had to make sure I wasnt reading a post about my Roscoe! he is also 11 weeks as of the 13th and still not nearly potty trained.LOL. Small world.
Anyway I can only say you are not alone..I also have Roscoe's brother Harley and the whole potty thing is frustrating. Al I can say is stick with it..they will learn eventually.

That is funny, my Roscoe and your Roscoe must have been born on the same day...11/28/06, because my Roscoe was 11 weeks as of the 13th too. How funny is that?!

I just want to reiterate what everyone else has written. 11 weeks is still very much a baby. Be patient because it will be a long, long time before he’s 100% trust worthy. I know you want to give him freedom to play but if he’s having accidents when you’re not right there to correct him then you’re making potty traing much more difficult for yourself. You need to control the situation 100% so he learns exactly what’s ok and what’s not. If he has the opportunity to make enough mistakes when you not there he’ll eventually think “well it must be ok to potty in the house because no one stopped me”. Good luck it’s a long road but we all have been there. It will be ok eventually!

I understand where you are coming from. Dakota will be 10 weeks old tomorrow and doesn't get it at all either. We're doing the same routine and she is just clueless. The hard part with us is that we know she should go outside after rough play, but with Maggie our 9 year old boxer, she is CONSTANTLY playing. Dakota kind of gets it at night - she's pretty good at holding it for about 4-5 hours. After that, forget about it. I think it's just patience, patience, patience. Which I know is hard to do when it's 4 degrees outside.

I feel your pain. Narnia is doing the same things. She is about 16 weeks old and at 12 weeks she was completely potty trained. She would whine at the door to go out or sit there until someone noticed, then race out to do her business. This lasted all of 3 weeks. Perfect. This last week she won't whine or wait. She just goes whenever, wherever she wants. We have caught her several times and scolded and directly outside then praised. Doesn't seem to matter. She will bark like crazy to get out of her crate. Bark to come back in the house after being outside. But refuses to bark when she needs to be let out. So I know she knows how to get our attention. She is just choosing not to. I don't know what else to do. We still do scheduled feeding/watering and everything else reccommended but it's not effective with her. I can't figure out what would make her back pedal like this. Is it typical of the breed? I can't trust her anymore. And I am tired to death of cleaning up 3-5 pee messes on my carpet a day!! She won't poop in the house but peeing isn't an issue with her, and I have noticed that my house is starting to smell. I can't have that. I only had a minute so I haven't read all the other posts yet, but hopefully I will find the answer in one of them!
