Hyper!

Hello. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Here's my story. I own two boxers (Stonewall and Einstein Brothers from the same mom) I orginally was only going to get one and a lady from my work went with me the same day and got one as well. A few months later my friend from work asked me if I would be willing to give the one she bought a home (Einstein). So now we have two Furbabies. They are around 18 months old or so and are great dogs. The only problem is they are very hyper. Especially when people come to visit. They jump and wiggle and go crazy they can't control themselves. The smaller one Stonewall 40lbs or so is very smart and seems to be slowly maturing and learning to chill out. But einstein is very timid of everything. Loud noises and new people really scare him. We have always believed that the first few months of his life spent at his other home where in someway very harsh. I wasn't there so I can't say what might have gone on. All I know is I will give him a happy loving home for the rest of his life. As a result of this harsh beginning Einstein is hard to train. He doesn't listen very good and is well...not dumb but just a little slow I guess. If you talk firmly to him to correct negative behavior he imediately thinks is going to be spanked and cowards down. Which we don't do. But as a result in stead of listening and learning his actions are wrong he is just over come with fear and forgets exactly why he is in trouble. When people visit they question if we ever discipline our dogs. I try to explain they are boxers and that we try hard to work with our boys. Generally they are great dogs but at times they become over excited and are very hard to calm down. We understand they only wanna play but being boxers the play is at times very rough(Not aggressive). Einstein loves to jump really high and use his feet to push hard off of people. Stonewall seems to jump less everyday and often tries to correct his brother by barking at him (As if he is saying stop being bad and they'll play with us). Any advice on calming them down would be great. As well as advice on how to make einstien feel safer and more comfortable. We thought after time he would be ok but it's been almost a year and he still is very timid. Thanks! Ohh I thought I would add that they are very smart they are potty trained with or without a doggie door as well as crate trained. The only issues they have is getting over excited and jumping. OHHH and Einstein is not fixed!! Plans to have him fixed are in the works. Hoping this might cure some issues. Thanks again.

I don't guess this will be a lot of help, but hopefully encouragement. Our boxer, Kobe is just over 3 years old and within the last 6 mo. or so we have noticed that he has calmed down a lot. He still gets very excited when people come over but doesn't jump on them. He jumps around and wants to sniff them and of course wants to play. I had heard that boxers are generally very hyper for the first couple of years. After that they are excellent dogs. Of course they are good dogs anyway, but even better when they aren't quite so hyper. So, my point is, that there is hope. It just maybe another year or so away. Not to mention I'm sure that they excite eachother. I can't imagine having two! Although lots of people have at least two and wouldn't have it any other way! Good luck! Wish I could be more help, but unfortunately I believe that it's mostly just the breed.

Yes that is part of the boxer breed. Very hyper. They do calm down a bit when they do get older.

I would suggest obedience school for Einstein. Start working with him separately so he learns that you are the boss. I would not want to train 2 boxers at the same time. 1 is hard enough :D

You also need to train your guests. Tell them to totally ignore the dogs when they are going nuts. Wait till they sit or at least calm down a little before they pet them. Boxers aren't dumb. They will learn quick if you and your guests are consistent.

seems like if Einstein was abused you really need to handle him with kit gloves. which means alot of praise when you see him being good. always have treats on hand as far as the jumping on people. it could be annoying when people come over and he jumps up so the way you could handle it is a couple of ways.

one way would be to keep him on a leash. this way when someone comes over you would have control of him. you could step on the leash so he could not jump.

another way is to tell your guest to ignore einstien turn there backs on him and don't give eye contact. this also works well but you have to have the guest help with it.

in time he will calm down with your love. good luck and let us know how it goes.:)

We've tried the turn your back and ignore them and this works with Stonewall as he wants love more than play. But einstein will jump on your back and claw you. Like I said he has learned to jump really high and almost push people down. He is very strong despite not being huge. I'd say Einstein is about average boxer size maybe and stonewall is smaller than average. Stonewall makes up for size with intelligence. Lately I put my hand out in front of thier faces flat so he they see a big stop sign and use the sit command. I guess I'm rewarding them with a response. I love boxers so I don't mind the wiggle and spazyness I just don't like the jumping and clawing. Normally the dogs spend almost all day outside playing in our almost all rock yard whihc keeps the claws to a min. but Summer is here andour temps are now between 100-115 so my pups spend half the day inside laying on the tile waiting for us to come home.(We have a doggie door and leave the A/C on for them, people give us crap all the time about this but what can we say we love'm too much to make them sit outside in the heat) So the claws are getting pretty sharp. (Any tips on how to keep the nails short? they hate the trimmers and I feel horrible if I get the wick so I try to not do it that often.)

As for Einstein I think he will always be a work in progress. He is very friendly with people and dogs but from the bay window or across the street he barks and gets excited. When we walk him he trys to jump on people walking by or gets excited towards other dogs. He has not intention to do anything more than get petted by someone or play with the other dog. But often people think he is a crazy pit bull trying to bite them or fight with their dog. Stonewall isn't so bad and much easier to control. We think this has a lot to do with Einstein not being fixed.

well if the turning your back does not help him what about the leash and stepping on it or holding it tight when someone comes. he can't jump then.

I agree with Trish, keep the leash on him so he can't jump when guests arrive. Somtimes I do that when I know if people don't understand that Duke is still a puppy. I have tried turning my back on Duke but that doesn't help us either.

i know this is not helping you short term, but rocky is not the same dog he was when he was a puppy. he was so hyper for a while i thought i would lose my mind, but it got much much better after 1 year. he is so calm now--he has all the playfulness but he is not nearly as hyper. mimi is still all hyper puppy and she is six months. --and also rocky did go to obedience. i agree with the previous post recommending it.

good luck!
