To me they have to know that there is a ton of paperwork going to one particular area....how could they not know???

Sure they know. The have an entire committee to work on Commercial Breeder issues. But what would you have them do? It's not illegal to have a large-scale dog breeding operation. More commercial kennels are inspected by the AKC than private kennels. As long as they're meeting the standards of care, is it really the AKC's responsibility to say how many litters are too many? Is there a magic number? Some people that everyone here would consider responsible have the facilities and abilities to raise 3-4 litters per year - others cannot properly raise 1 per year. Where do you draw the line?

Logically if she was able to get the AKC to cancel their ability to register pups wouldn't that put them out of business possibly? This is my theory because they are selling the pups on the basis that they are "AKC" registered. People thinking that this is a determining factor when purchasing a pup would then not consider purchasing from them.

Doubt it. They'd just go to the ConKC or some other puppymill registry, and still sell "registered" dogs (CKC or AKA are ones that often confuse people). The people who believe that AKC = quality are also going to believe that these other registries are "just as good" as AKC, because they haven't done any research to know any differently. :(

I would say this could and would be a good start:
There was a registered kennel (not to far from me, rather local) that lost their AKC priveleges because of the amount of complaints and because they refused to let AKC officials inspect their kennels. They now sell mixed breed dogs for $75.00 and up.

What is stated on the back of my AKC Procedures for Registration Matters is:
Mission Statement:
.Maintain a registry for purebred dogs and PRESERVE its integrity
.Sanction dog events that promote interest in, and sustain the process of, breeding for type and function of purebred dogs.
.Take whatever actions necessary to protect and assure the constitution of the sport of purebred dogs.

Just for discussion: I would think AKC would be somewhat ashamed to see the conditions those dogs are found in when a puppy mill bust is made and to find out just how many of them they supply litter applications too. I don`t see how that preserves AKC integrity. BUT at the same time I think it is misleading when they say take whatever actions necessary to protect and assure the constitution of the sport of purebred dogs. I know I have seen many AKC registered dogs that were NOT purebred. They don`t make Boxers with hair that is two inches long.

To Tysonsway:
Maybe you could use those Mission statements to help AKC realize the mess byb`s are making them look when they won`t stand up to save their integrity but at the same time preserve the purebred dog (in support of such breeders).

This means preserve the integrity of the registry - make sure that the puppies are sired and out of who the breeder says they are sired and out of. That is where the DNA Compliance Program comes in.

Take whatever actions necessary to protect and assure the constitution of the sport of purebred dogs.

This phrase is talking about the *sport* of purebred dogs - the shows, the trails, etc. The conformation of the dogs is not at issue - AKC is not about quality, as they state so often.

Listen, I don't think the AKC is perfect - far from it. But I think too often, people expect them to be things they are not. The conditions in commercial kennels are addressed somewhat by the AKC's Commercial Breeder program, sure, but more importantly, they are addressed by the federal Animal Welfare Act. It is the USDA who should be ashamed of the conditions found in puppymill busts, because they are the regulatory authority for large-scale dog breeders.

Would you expect the DMV to give tickets to speeders? No - that is the job of the police. The DMV issues the licenses, and takes them away if they find out that people are not following the rules, but they do not have the manpower or the authority to apprehend the rulebreakers in the first place - nor should they.

Hi All,
Thanks for all the input. I was really frustrated the day I wrote the post, so it was a little more heated than it should have been; but effectively stated my concerns with the AKC registration process.
Christine called me again today and said that they had gotten ahold of the litter owner and she verified the transfer of Jasmine along with the lack of papers for her. Although AKC still needs to wait until Nov. 18 to see if she will answer their letter with a written reply, just having the litter owner state that my puppy came from her litter will likely be enough for me to register my pup with out her signiture (we'll have to wait and see though).
As some of you have already offered advise on persuing them legally this is what I've already done... have already filed with the Better Business Bureau, contacted the local news in Syracuse, NY (I posted the story they did)... I contacted the local animal control agent, the consumer protection division, I contacted small claims court to get some $$ back, but the MP's keep moving (back and force between counties) and the court system is too slow to serve them with papers!! I've contacted and talked to to local judges and police departments... They all agree that I need to serve them with papers to bring them to court, but can't help in finding them to serving them.

To answer the question about what I want AKC to do for my situation... I dont know. I know having them call and send a letter to the MP's was a step in the right direction. At least I can say that I tried to do something about my situation, I wasnt one of those people that complained and complained but didnt try to fix anything.
I want to make sure I post my accomplishments along with my frustrations in hopes that people researching things will learn from our mistakes. Also to those who may be going through a similar situation I want to post what I've done to help them resolve their own issues!

So this is it... I'm officially stopping my drive to get these people. I will post an update to what AKC came up with so everyone will know the outcome.

Thanks again for all the input. This is one person who unfortuntely had to learn the hard way, but from it grew a person that will do anything it takes to educate people about the necessity of buying Boxers (or any puppy) from a very reputable breeder.
