You don't have the money to buy responsibly, but do you have the money to support a sickly pup instead? If not, then you simply shouldn't be buying a dog at all. However much you want it "right now".

Boxer, you couldn't have posted a better rebuttal to buying puppymill and BYB's boxers and the ramifications. So well said, kudos to you! I couldn't agree more with the above excerpt.

My Calla

Boxer Insane
Calla is from a BYB, however, I was not aware of all of the problems they can inherit. I didn't even know what a BYB was until joining this site. I too am grateful to BW because I have learned so much about how to properly care for Calla and do the necessary things to make sure she has a long and happy life.

Holden's Mom

I will never know Petey's heritage. He was a rescue, picked up as a stray. He was at least neutered, and has a great temperment. We got him at about two years of age and have been his people for over two years, so Petey is at least four years old. So far he has been very healthy, only having a skin tag removed.

I often think I would have loved to have known this great boy as a puppy. He's just a wonderful boxer boy, regardless of his breeding.

I believe i had one of each.

We got a 4 yr old retired breeding dog from a breeder who does testing, asks that unwanted dogs be reterned and they've had a couple of champs that they showed in the past.

The other we got free from a friend of a relative. She was very small and sickly on and off for most of her life. Knowing the people, i'm sure they got her from a pet store or BYB.

Our white girl, Ruga, most likely came from a BYB. We got (bought) her from someone who didn't want her after they found out she was deaf, and most likely they found her at a BYB.

Dasiy Mae is from a reputable breeder. With all health tests (thanks to this site I knew what to ask!). This was the breeder's first litter, but they worked with a seasoned breeder who they bought Daisy Mae's mother from. The breeder definately was not in it for the money. There were only five pups in the litter, one was given to Daisy Mae's mother's breeder(who helped with this littered), another was sold to a family that knew Daisy's father's breeder, and the remaining three (Daisy, her sister & brother) were kept a show prospects. Daisy's sister and brother had more flash and were considered, by the breeder, as better show prospects.

Meanwhile, I was being educated by this site and doing my homework elsewhere. I was becoming a pest to as many reputable breeders in Northern CA emailing & calling them until I got a response to find out if: 1) They had any puppies, or were planning a litter, 2) Knew anyone who had any puppies or was planning a litter, 3) Would give me any sort of other lead to find a reputable breeder. I went to a dog show and met about half the breeders I contacted. Then I started to work my way South. I finally came in contact with the woman who bred and sold Daisy's mother to Daisy's breeder. I would have never found them if I hadn't have been so persistant. They weren't actively trying to find Daisy a home, but had mentioned to the lady I contacted, that they didn't plan on showing Daisy and probably would want to find a pet home for her, eventually.

Finally, the reason why I know they weren't in it for the money was because they showed me all the bills for Dasiy (vaccines, parents health tests, etc.), added a couple hundred for Daisy's other expenses and care for 14 weeks and that is the amount I paid plus $200 that would be refunded once we have her spayed, (scheduled for the a day before Thanksgiving, so we can be home with her). We paid way below the $1000-$1500 mentioned in early posts. The only catch was I had to drive 12 hours (round trip) to get Daisy.

I'm not writing this to brag I got a good Boxer cheap (that's why I didn't disclose what I paid). I know I was blessed with this opportunity, or got lucky, however you look at it. I'm writing this to encourage others who are looking for a boxer to spend some time educating themselves, networking with breeders and handlers from their area at dog shows and other events, and be willing to drive (or fly) somewhere to get the companion you hope to have for the next 10-12 years.

Wilma was purchased from a BYB (sort of). This family had a male and female and let them have 2 litters. Both parents were papered and tested and when we picked her up, we got copies of all the vet bills and tests. This family seemed very responsible and Wilma's mom was spayed shortly after this litter. I felt they was responsible even thought they was technically BYBs. This family did not make much money on this litter after looking at the bills they paid. Looks as though they just recouped their expenses and a little.

This was pretty much our experience. Mom and Dad were there on site (Dad was a gorgeous fawn), this was their 2nd litter (and mom has been spayed since then). They have kept in touch with us via e-mail and pictures, and to my knowledge they still may have a puppy or two left (they did not sell to everyone interested). They questioned us up and down, and we felt pretty comfortable with the puppy we got. We got a lot of papers on mom and dad, and all the vet trips for Macie.

My Keeya

Boxer Booster
I know that I got Keeya from a BYB. She was a very nice woman who owned two beautiful fawn boxers and thought it would be great to breed them. I found her ad in the paper and went to her web-site. She had the pics of mom and dad and each of the nine pups. I called her up and told her I was interested in seeing a few of the pups. She said she would drive half-way to meet me and my family and bring the three dogs. ( I know, I know I should have actually SEEN the mom and dad). Anyway, she drove up to where we were parked and got the three darling puppies out of her car. We talked to her and her husband for a while, played with the pups and chose Keeya. I paid her $500 cash and we brought our girl home. She was only 6 weeks old. I didn't know that they needed to be with their mama a little longer. So far so good. The vet says she is beautiful and in good health. I hope she always stays that way. The woman I bought her from has been in touch to see how we're all doing so I know she truly cared about the pups. (She actually cried when she handed Keeya to me.) I found BW the week after I brought Keeya home. I had so much to learn. I hope that we'll be fortunate and Keeya will be with us free of health problems for a long, long time.

We got Dutch from a "back yard breeder" but she knew an awful lot about her dogs and the parents of her dogs. Dutch is not papered, so she isn't "legit" by AKC standards, but you have no doubt upon seeing her that she is pure bred boxer. :) She's healthy, beautiful, and smart as a whip. I don't really care if she's papered or not, she's my girl and I love her! :)

The entire litter was GORGEOUS and we looked at many liters before we chose Dutch that were "legit" boxers and not that nice looking.

Tucker's Mom

Super Boxer
I believe Tucker came from a BYB, but both of his parents were health screened. It was a rather unusual situation, so maybe he's not from a BYB. I really don't know for sure.

Basically, the lady who had the pups also had the bitch on site. The stud, however, belonged to the breeder. The bitch and stud were both health screened, and the breeder took one of the pups for show. But, the lady I bought him from kept the rest and sold them as pets. Is that normal? I know the breeder and the lady I bought Tuck from are related some how...but is it normal for a reputable breeder to do things that way? I'm so confused I can't even vote in the poll!

Dunkin

My first boxer Max was a rescue (I think) I new the stupid &%$#@ that had him and she mistreated him soooo bad. She needed drugs and called me to ask if I would buy Max? (she would give me Missy) I jumped on it because I had fallen love with him. So I got him and Missy. Missy was so sick I found out later she had tried to artificiality inseminate Missy and had messed her up so bad. We had to have her put down. (no she no longer has any dogs. She is in prison) We lost Max to cancer in Jan. 2005 after 8 years with us. Jagger was another rescue he died in Jan. 4 days after Max form liver failure due to starvation. I bought Jazzy from a BYB because I did not know better. Bojax is a rescue. Maggie was given to me by a BYB because she thought she was going to die from an respitory infection (she did not have time to mess with her) That was 6 monthes ago and so far Maggie is healthy and happy.
