Hi, I was just wondering how many people bought their babies from BYB's? We got Girlie from a reputable breeder but it seems that there are a lot of people on this board who had fallen prey to the dreaded BYB's. Anyway, it is really sad, but I am really curious about the percentages of those who got their boxer from a byb as opposed to a reputable breeder.

I thought we had a reputable breeder

But after learning about the health testing issues with boxers. I'm pretty sure Drake is from a BYB:(

Titan and Zoey are rescues from a BYB, so far so good though as both are healthy still. And we too still love our babies even if they did come from a bad home, it's ok they got a much better life now then the guy who had them before. I'd love to send him a pic of both of them now just to rub it in a little..mean and childish I know, but I don't take kindly to mistreating and abusing dogs- and puppies at that.

An interesting question, but I would guess that the majority of Boxers are from puppy mills. Our first Boxer, Rocky, came from a pet store where our daughter worked while attending college. He was the product of a puppy mill for sure.

Our two current Boxers came from a reputable breeder.

Chances are that most rescues are the product of puppy mills or byb's, simply because most if not all reputable breeders require those who get one of their pups to return it in the eventuallity they are unable or unwilling to care for it.

I know we did. We have an understanding with the breeder of our two that should something happen to Marcia and I, our older daughter would get "custody" of them.

We cannot give them away, or have them euthanized without first notifying her.

Most backyard breeders and all puppy mills are not interested in what happens to the pups once they leave their custody. The book is closed, and have nothing more to do with the pups.

Having said that, I wonder what the membership of Boxerworld would be if reputable breeders were the only source for the breed. They only produce a small fraction of the Boxers alive today. We would have never known Rocky, or developed such a love for the breed.

It follows that we would never have gotten Indy or Ava, since one of the "requirements" of their breeder is that a person must have either owned or had experience with Boxers.

We'll never be able to know for sure, but I would guess that Boxerworld would be about 1/10th of it's current size, maybe less.

I made sure to research the breeder I got Rocco from completely. She turned out to be not only a great boxer breeder who cares for this breed like no one I know, but a great woman as well.

Rocco turned out to be a great dog all around. His health is great, his temperment calm and easy going, his build is large, but very lean and muscular.

The original breeder I spoke with turned out to be running a mill. When I found this out, I instantly called and told him I was no longer interested.

All four that we have had are from reputable breeders...........the first one, almost thirteen years ago, purely bull_ _ _ _ luck. Thank God we got a great breeder from day one, but if they were and I didnt know any better, I'd love em just the same, I know all of us here would and will :)

This leads me to another question I wanted to post...Where are the pet stores? It seems, at least in St. Louis, MO that there are no more pet stores other than Petsmart and Petco. There are no more PassPets nor are there any other pets stores in our malls.

I think this is a great thing. Our breeder has also requested that if we are no longer able to keep Girlie, we return her so that the breeder can screen to find a new home. You really get the sense that these people truly care about the breed and want only the best for them.

Yes, I mean, it is a catch22, because reputable breeders are very picky about where their pups go and you are right, they don't have many litters. I still hope puppy mills and bybs drop in numbers.
