Hi Susan! I sent you a PM. I have ordered some Wild Salmon Oil for Duke--I wanted to get the Cold Water Fish Oil too, but it is a new item and is supposed to be coming soon. I also ordered some Vit C for him too. I can get Primrose Oil Gel Caps and Borage Oil Gel Caps and Cod Liver Oil at the Apache store that I mentioned earlier. If I get these, do you know how many mg. of each different oil he can take? Paula

Hi Paula.

I forgot to tell you that a really good vitamin C is *Mega C *by Dr. Belfield he has a website you can do a search with his name. With vitamin C you can do a bowel tolerance and see how much he can handle. Do a small amount over 3-4 days but most boxer size dogs can handle up to 1500mg a day. The primrose the vet said give about 1500mg to 2000 depending on how bad the skin is and borage I don't give. but 500-1000 a day. You could alternate the oils too.The cod liver just give 1 cap a week.

Got more oils today

Hi Susan! I ordered Duke some powdered Vitamin C off a website--it goes by bowel tolerance too. I think they said 1 tsp. was 5000 mg. But I am going to start him out at 1/4 tsp and we will go from there. I got primrose, borage, fish oil ( I want to get that other (Cold Water) though when it comes out on Timberwolf's site) and some Vitamin E today. I didn't get Cod although I did see it. I am going to alternate all of the oils too. After 2 or so days of no beef (just chicken) and twice daily essential oil massages, his belly didn't look so raw and red today. The backs of his legs still don't look very good, but it is hard to get the essential oils through all the hair on his legs. I am hopeful with the new oils and Vitamin C added to his food and continue with the essential oil massage this may be the beginning of a turn around. I don't want to get too excited about it though. It would be wonderful if this would clear up this way! Paula

Thanks Susan!!

Susan, I forgot to add Thank You for all of your help and for the amounts to give! I was going to give him a little less than what you found out, but now I will up it! I am beginning to wonder about the beef (he has beef every morning for breakfast) but it is probably just a coincidence that he might be looking a little better. Paula

I also forgot to mention about the essential oils you are using. I normally stay away from tea tree because it can be a little to strong for animals and when doing homeopathy I do not use it because strong scents cancel the remedies. The lavender is fine. I do not mix essential oils with a carrier oil unless I am trying to kill mites from mange.

For rashes I mix my essential oils with a mixture of SPRING WATER and or ALOE VERA JUICE( no additive added kind), GREEN TEA the essential oils I use in this mixture are LAVENDER and CALENDULA ( to dry up the rash or infection) and I add a few drops of GRAPEFRUITSEED EXTRACT (for the bacteria) and I add CRABAPPLE a Bach Flower essence to the mixture too.

Also do not feed the same meat everyday try to rotate every 2 or 3 days since you are dealing with a allergy type symptom.

Still a tiny bit better

Duke continues to show a tiny bit of improvement every day in his rash. Starting out with raw and oozy cherry red skin and rash down to light to medium pink now with no oozy spots. He's hasn't had any beef for 3 or 4 days now, I think. Still just chicken. I have changed his oil from olive to a rotation of primrose, borage, wild salmon, fish, occasional vitamin E thrown in (I will be rotating these oils monthly or maybe every couple of weeks, except for the fish oils--I will rotate these daily when it is time for fish oils) and maybe cod liver once a week too. I am anxiously waiting for the Vitamin C and Wild Salmon Oil to come. Hopefully, Monday. Susan, I will be getting some Calendula to try too. We are taking him back to the holistic vet on Monday just to let her look at him and see what she thinks. I want to talk to her about his diet. If he can't have beef we are going to have to get him something else. I don't think chicken, fish, turkey and very rarely lamb and pork (although the problem with Pork is more me being nervous to feed it) are going to be enough of a variety. What does anyone else think? We are seriously considering ordering him some Rabbit and Lamb (Lamb is very, very scarce here in the grocery store)--place for paws and maybe Duck and possibly Buffalo from Oma's. Although the Apache Indian store here may carry Buffalo, but I don't know how much it would be a pound, yet. Paula

to the holistic vet today

Well, we took Duke back to the vet today. She thought his skin looked so so, but she did not see him at his absolute worse either, she only saw it when it was first beginning. She feels this is allergy related, probably more than one thing. She wants us to try a product called Zn7 which is a topical zinc I believe she said. So we use that once a day and then his essential oils the other time of day. She gave us allergy drops to give to Duke, 6 drops twice a day orally. It has things such as histamine, silicea, apis mellifica and several other things with long names in it. I am cutting down his Benadryl to 2 capsules 3 times a day. I hope he doesn't get too itchy. I am still very hopeful that in time this will clear up and go away. Paula

Even better today

Today Duke's skin on his belly looks almost back to normal--just a little pinkish yet. His toes and legs aren't real good yet, but I have a feeling in time they will be too. His darker skin on his sides are "pox marked" or "speckled" where the rash started to go up his sides . That may stay that way I suppose. He's had no benadryl today with minimal chewing of his feet and legs and no itching and digging at his belly or neck. Picked up some pork today for both of them. I will just have to get over my fear of feeding it. Started his Vit. C today also along with continuing the other suppliments. I am glad we waited this out and treated him this way. A couple of times hubby was ready to throw the towel in and just take him and get him a steroid shot--it was hard for him to watch Duke be so itchy even on all the Benadryl. I am so happy Duke is getting so much better and thanks to everyone on here who has helped us! Paula

Just a note about Benadryl. Benadryl doesn't work for all dogs. There are other OTC antihistamines that can be used. What works for one may not work for another.

I've given my white:

Diphenhydramine (Most common brand name is Benadryl)
Clemastine (One brand name is Tavist, but NOT Tavist D)
Hydroxyzine (from vet is the only source I know of)
Loratadine (One brand name is Claritin, but you can buy plain
generic Loratadine for much cheaper)

Benadryl didn't work.
Clemastine didn't help much
Hydroxyzine seemed to help Scooby quite a bit
Loratadine - I switched to this as I can get it OTC, meaning
cheaper than Hydroxyzine from Vet. Seems to be doing
okay for him.

Basically, switch around the antihistamines until you find one that works.

Prednisone For Allergies???

Hi, I just came back from vet, who gave my two years old boy a PREDNISONE . This medicine is a corticosteroid used to treat severe allergies, arthritis, asthma, and skin conditions. I was doing Benadryl, that was not quite working. However I am very hesitant to beging STEROIDS. I would really appreciate any advise. Thanks. Elena
