Holistic treatment for allergies?

Hi Elena...You can try switching around OTC antihistamines like Binky said. I am the original poster on this thread. Duke developed a very severe rash during the summer. There was no way I was going to give him steroids. I have given my other boxer Didi steroids several times from a regular vet and wish I knew better then. I had Duke on LOTS of benedryl during the summer and then I tried Loratadine. Mostly though I went to a holistic vet over in Kentucky. My advice would be to maybe try different OTC antihistamines and then find yourself a good holistic vet. We don't really know for sure what Duke is allergic too (he is fine now that it is winter time) but sometimes what they eat can be the culprit but it can be other things too or a combo of things. Thanks, Paula. I would be looking to change my vet. We just moved from New England to CA and new to the area. We never really seen a holistic vet yet, all the holistic diet he has from the books. Thanks for advise. Elena

All steroids do is cover up the problem. I would go to a holistic bet who will work with your dog to figure out the problem.

How much Loratadine????

Binky, I know it has been awhile since the post, but how much loratadine did you give your White??? I'm not sure if the benedryl is really helping Sammy and would like to try something different. I am also going to have my vet do the hypothroid testing on him... poor baby looks aweful. Is that kind of test expensive does anyone know??? Thanks for everyones help!!

Maybe this will help

My Holistic vet told me to put my itchy baby on Olive leafe extract. She says that it will not only help with the itching but it helps boost the immune system to fight of the allergies. Also My vet gives my dog an ion bath and it helps pull all the toxins that could be the cause of his allergies out of his body. She just makes him put his 2 front feet in a tub of water then adds an ion changer ray to the bath. In no time the water is a nasty color from where the toxins are being pulled out of his body. THis has helped my baby a great deal. I think Mac has 3 more of these treatments then t it should be done.

That is really interesting!! I have never heard of that before. I assume you go to a holistic vet? I will have to ask my vet about that. That may be really good for Sammy! Thanks for your help.

It's Back

Well, one year later since Duke started getting his rash (which disappeared last fall and winter and this spring when the weather started cooling off) it has started to come back again. It has been terribly hot here the last week and that is when I have noticed some spots. He's been on Proanthozone since April of this year, hoping that it might keep it away. So I have started his "oil massages" again and will be adding the topical Zn7 Derm tonight. Back on Benadryl too. We were so hoping that this wouldn't happen again, but I think now a lot of it must have to do with where we live beings it is starting again and at the same time as last year too. I just hope he doesn't get real bad like last year. Paula
