Hives again!!!

Okay, so I realize last nights episode was a case of hives which Bendaryl relieved.

I bathed him today. Then let him outside for some air like I do every day when my daughter comes home from school as she plays outside.

We all come in and what do I find, hives appearing again. I don't understand this. I've done nothing different. I've given him the Benadryl to stop/prevent more hives.
My poor baby is fast asleep.

What should I do to prevent this? He loves going outside!

HELP!!!!

Take him to the vet. It could be anything from an allergic reaction to anything outside, or something more serious. My puppy had scrangle. Never heard of it. Me either until my vet told me. A little antibiotic and he is as good as new. Good luck.

Brutus has had hives twice this year. However...I have seen him in the yard chasing the bumble bees. They are large, buzzy and easier to chase than the birds. The bees usually fight back and Bru loses :(

Do you use any powders or cleaners on your carpet?? Our 5 year old boxer has had a couple of horrible episodes with huge, red hives, even to the point where her ears and face became very swollen (they are very visible on her since she's white). After a couple of emergency visits (one on Christmas eve at 1:00 in the morning), our vet ruled out food alergies and then asked if we put anything on our carpet, like Carpet Fresh, which we used regularly. Once we steam cleaned our carpets and stopped using the powders, the problem went away, and so far so good.

Now our 1 year old boxer has had 2 slight breakouts, and we found that one episode happened right after I found small chewed up chunks of pine branches in her mouth when I let her in (she chews everything). We keep her away from the pine bushes and she hasn't had a problem.

Just a couple of ideas.

I know for Bru it is an outside issue. The hives only come about when he has decidesd he is an outside dog for the day and spends more than 3 hours outside.

HIVES!!!! I have had no end to hives this year. Firstly , I think boxers can be very sensitive to some things, usually in their surroundings, sometimes in their foods. For two of my younger dogs ,this year has been hell. Hives have erupted at any given time and as they always live outdoors it is an ongoing problem for them. Because of the nature of most peoples outdoors, it is hard to remove or isolate dogs from everything that can affect them. I have tried all sorts of things to relieve the symptoms including herbal drops and nothing much has helped long term. The boys are fine at the moment , but all I can do is monitor them and give drugs when needed. I am hoping they will grow up to be a little stronger to the things that bother them so. Perhaps you may find your boxer gains some amount of resilience to things as well. The up side of hives is unless they are having breathing difficulties , it is not a dangerous thing for them. More a darn nusciance, especially if itchy. Mine dont seem to itch much, thank goodness!

My boxer Mona got her first hives whem she got her first shots from the vet and every time after that.She also got hives if she was out in the Calif. sun for 10-20 mins. She also got hives from certain antibiotics.At the age of 4 I found a vet who did a skin biopsy and she was diagnosed with pemphigus.Thats an auto immune disorder that people get.She is 6 yrs. old now and for two years is being treated by a holistic vet and is doing great.Also she is off vaccines,antibiotics, flea control and chemicals in the home. Her hives are less frequent and don't last as long when she goes out.

Hives, New York area...yes

There are several species of plants in or area, including the Black Evening Nightshade that gives hives on contact(sometimes to people also)and can kill if ingested by dogs. I will look up the rest for you if you`re interested I ran into lots of hives when our`s were younger, they seem to grow out of it, unfortunatly I still get the itchy`s when I touch them when they have have been in contact with the plant.(thank goodness for Benedryl):D I also go weed pulling in the spring, the itch isn`t as bad then.

We're doing a lot better!

I gave Bishop Benadryl before we went outside and he hasn't had an episode yet.

I did a lot of research online. We don't use any carpet powders, he hasn't had a change in his diet. He also hasn't had any shots recently to give a reaction.

I know it was definately something outside. We have since had a couple of good rains, & I know the allergens have ceased a bit because my allergies haven't been acting up as much either.

When I cut the grass last I made sure to cut it very short this time. I guess I'll just keep trying to prevent them, but I am interested in learning about those plants as posted by boxer 4.

Hives

Unfortunately, I have had several visits from the "Hive Fairy". :eek:

My 3 1/2 year old baby from rescue Satin, loves to be outdoors and sunbath. Apparently there is something in the backyard/garden that she is allergic to. The first time, Dr. John was open and he was able to give her an ephenrine(sp?) shot and things calmed down. We thought it would be a one time thing because we had just taken the fence down that surrounded the garden. The next day my husband roto-tilled the garden under and we thought it was over. Four days later, she came in from outside COMPLETELY covered in hives, some as large as my hand. I did not know what to do. I called my best friend who is a nurse and has been doing rescue for 16 years.

The first thing I did was to give Satin a bath with DAWN dish washing liquid. DAWN is formulated to break up grease and oils and the offending plants put out oils. This helped tremendously.

The next time, I wasn's home when she was out in the yard and I found her on the couch barely breathing. Luckily my best friend was with me and we had to take her to the emergency clinic. After $450 (thank you very much) she was released.

After the emergency trip, I talked to my vet and I keep on hand the Epi-pens that people use who are allergic to bee stings and stuff. I get them at the drug store and he prescribed a child's dose. I had to use one for the first time three days ago, and it works wonders.

Maybe someone can learn from my experiences and expenses. I also keep two Epi-Pens in the fridge at all times because my baby girl still likes to sunbath.
