My 10 month old neutered maleboxer Leo is consuming our clothes and paper towels. The paper towels he is able to pass through his digestive system. Today he had thrown up a whole pair of my wifes underwear. Why does he eat these things. We are tryingour hardest to keep them out of his reach but he always seems to get a hold of them. Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. He just threw up another pair of underwear. Why is he doing this to himself? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bordom and too much energy can often be a trigger for this sort of behaviour so make sure your boxer gets a good run everyday, twice if possible.
Boxers are a very active , high energy dog, many people dont understand this and 10 mths is a time when they are probably feeling the most energetic!.
Also make sure he has LOTS of interesting and safe toys to munch on.
A kong filled with peanut butter is great.
Do you crate him while you are at work?
Crates are an excellent way of controling a dog while no one is home.
Other wise make sure every single item of clothing is kept out of his reach and he is locked out of bedrooms etc.
The kitchen or living area is fine but remember he can still get into electrical wires etc which are very dangerous.
Boxers can be very destructive while young so proper training and supervision now is important.
Its a sad fact that a lot of boxers are rehomed or destroyed because people didnt understand what they were taking on initially.
Have you considered obedience trainig?
It will give you both some quality time together and teach your dog good behaviour, for life.

Thanks for the quick response. He is crated during the day. He does get at least one good run during the course of the day. I think that we may need to get more toys for him. We do have a 4 month old son and I am wondering if our Boxer feels left out of our family.

I have a 15 month old boxer. I think that i have been lucky because my boxer has never really ate anything or tore up anything maybe a few toys out of the kids room. But one thing we did for about a year was keep all bedroom doors closed and lots of toys and chew bones ( rawhide) and safe hard rubber toys they can teeth (sp) on. Actually we did have an incident now that i think about it, we went away for the weekend and had my sister watch the dogs. well she didnt know that if they ran out of chew bones to get new ones out, i guess that the bone had rolled under the couch and buddy had tore a small hole in the back of the couch and for awhile we didnt know why, but the next time i vaccumed i moved the couch and low and behold there was his bone. (lol) so my suggestion is lots of toys and chew bones.

Debbie gave you great advise. Boxers live for attention. Exercise is a must for a happy boxer and lots of toys. You have boxer baby...toddler....and what do toddlers do? Get into anything and everything.:) Undies and bra's are favorites.:)

A friend of mine has a pit bull that did the exact same thing as a young dog. Whenever he got near socks or underwear they would be swallowed whole (gulp!). I remember how frustrated my friend was because they tried the obedience training and had a houseful of toys and the pitbull still did this when he could, so be careful! The good news is that he did grow out of this habit after he was two. Good luck to you.

We only had one boxer that actually swallow whole pieces of clothing. Dutch used to swallow whatever she could get in her mouth, it was scarey, in her case it wasn't from lack of attention or anything like that, I was home all the time and we also had Duke. The vet we used to go to was stumped so he just told me that some dogs do this and hide anything she could swallow. Well that was fine until she started eating the bottom of the curtains or bedspread and sometimes would go in the bathroom and snag a towel(while we were home)smashicon This went on until she got a pair of long underwear( I was doing laundry and sorting) and chewed off the entire leg and swallowed it, that day we were really scared and called the emergency clinic, they had us give her Hydrogen peroxide and bring her in. She brought it up all in one piece, the vet said she would have probably died if it had gotten as far as her intestine and wrapped around. We told him of all the other times she had done this(she was 5yrs old at this time). He told me it may be something she is deficiant in and was craving, and like a pregnant woman that eats weird stuff (like Dirt) it was probably something called pica. He suggested we go to a better food and give her vitamin suppliments for a while to see if it would help. It seemed to help she seemed to stop within a month. I don't know if he was right or it was just"she finally grew up" but it did seem to help and we never had a problem again except with an occasional piece of a stuffed toy(ear, foot, tail)coming out in the backyard but nothing big. We now go to that vet for everything.
