Grinding Teeth?

I was wondering if anyone else's has a pup that sounds like they are grinding their teeth? Sometimes when Logan closes his mouth he makes a sound like his teeth are grinding. Well he's been to the vet twice in the past couple months. The first time was a check up. This last time was lump next to his nose. The lump is from a glad backing up. Well both times I told the vets about it. Two different vets saw him. The first one check his teeth and said she didn't see any problems with his teeth. That was it. The second one said that they can not grind their teeth because the can not move their jaws back and forth. She said he must be clanking his teeth. This got me thinking. If he teeth can touch to clank, then they can grind going up and down right? Well I was just wondering if anyone else has experience this?

WOW, finally someone who knows what I'm talking about. My Dakota started grinding her teeth she was about 4 years old - and I DO mean grinding, it was so loud. My vet looked at her teeth and said they were fine and couldn't understand why she did it. But it was always when she was settling down for the night that she would grind them. Never did find a reason for her grinding.

That's exactly when Logan seems to grind his. When he is settling down. And the really strange thing is he just started a few months ago and he turns 4 this month. Well at least I'm not crazy. I thought about taping the sound and letting the vet hear it.

Sometimes dogs just grind their teeth, but often it is a sign of pain (not in the mouth, but elsewhere). Certainly a thorough vet check of the entire dog wouldn't be a bad idea. :)

Julie, interesting that you should say that it is a sign of pain (elsewhere in the body). Dakota was diagnosed around at 4 1/2 yrs with CRF. I personally only ground my teeth when I had mouth pain, which got me to thinking that was why Dakota was grinding her teeth...pain. I'd be curious to see how many other boxers grind their teeth and at what age they start.

Wow, I had no idea other dogs did this...and I didn't really want to post about it because I figured no one would know what I was talking about. Layla started grinding her teeth about a month ago, and though we adopted her through rescue and are not sure of her exact age, she is about 4 years old. She only does it when she is going to sleep or waking up, but it is always preceded by her making some kind of movement with her tongue in her mouth...it's difficult to explain, which is why I was hesitant to post about it. It's kind of like what we (humans) do with our tongues in our mouth after we taste a little bit of something and are trying to figure out if we like it...hmmm...does that make any sense? The tongue is sort of repeatedly pressed against the roof of the mouth and then brought down again, and we (humans) open our mouths each time the tongue is brought down from the roof of the mouth. Well, anyways, she has always done this with her tongue when she is going to sleep or waking up, but now it is followed by the grinding noise. I have a vet appt for her Wednesday (for an unrelated issue) and I'm definately going to ask about it. Let me know if you guys hear of any reasons for this (besides pain elsewhere in the body), and if there's any way to stop it (because I'm sure it can't be good for their teeth)! Mycal, thanks for posting this topic!

Well, Spirit is 8mths old now and he grinds his teeth but only when I walk him!! He is outfitted with a Halti/gentle leader when we walk (or else my arms would be around my ankles!!). While walking he grinds his teeth...loudly! I have asked at the pet supply store if the Halti was fitting properly, because I too thought he may be in pain! The Halti fits normally, so should not cause any pain. Maybe he does this cuz he's not happy with this strap around his nose??
Xena has never grinded her teeth...but she "smacks" her lips? It's hard to explain...but her jaw moves quickly when doing this so it's a few "smacks" we hear and I still cannot figure out why she does this??

Grindin from wayyyyyyyyyyyyy back

We got Roxie when she was seven weeks old (white) she grinds her teeth every night just before bed, ( like when shes trying to get comfy ) then she settles down and goes to sleep. We tease her and tell her were gonna get her a mouth guard, ( I wear one, I could wake the dead if left to my own devices :)
But..........she's 12, she's still got all her teeth, were thinkin.........it's not so bad.
Vet says nothing wrong.
