littleM
Boxer Pal
Hello everyone,
I am a proud boxer owner. Our pup is named Mieszko or "little Mike" in Polish - thus the name "littleM". Mieszko is a healthy seven year old, 85 pound male brindle boxer with uncropped ears and just a white chest and couple of white marks on the backs of his heels. He has gone through quite a bit in his life and is the best bud a family could have.
My wife and I bought Mieszko a couple of months before we were married as a puppy. We wanted a dog with a lot of energy and we also wanted a dog that we knew was loyal, loving, and good with kids. I also travel quite a bit for work, so we didn't mind that Mieszko was going to be a bit imposing looking to those not familiar with boxers.
We took him to obedience classes and for Thanksgiving we had him boarded for the first time with the trainer (who had just opened a new kennel on his property). He overbooked and when we came back to pick up Mieszko he was covered in urine, and his eyes had wept the whole time, causing his cheeks to bleed. I was furious, but a little nieve (being a first time dog owner) and chalked it up to not knowing what shape a dog would be in after bording. He was alive and healthy, so I figured it was what normally happened. The next time I took him to obedience class, I noticed that Mieszko was skittish and anxious, especially when the trainer's young daughter was around (10 yrs old or so). After a rather heated discussion with the trainer (who blamed me for the ordeal), he let slip that Mieszko had barked the whole weekend uncontrollably. We obviously never went back there again. A couple of weeks later, he snapped at a young child that we passed on our daily walk. From that moment on, we have had to keep him away from people that he isn't completely familiar with, as he turns very aggressive on children and strangers.
He is marvelous with our family. We have two children (4 and 2) and he has never had any problems with them. In fact, he adores them, sleeping next to them when they were babies, and loving when they crawl all over him now (even when he's sleeping - which we try to avoid). He loves going to the vet as well for some reason, and they love him there. He just is scared of kids and usually people that are timid around him.
Anyway, a long-drawn out "hello" from me. I'm off to the health forums, we are looking into better feeding habits for Mieszko, as he has a terrible time with allergies, causing uncontrollable scratching and problems with his ears, so I'm excited to get some advice and chat with all of you about our pups.
Thanks for letting me in!
