Lucy came home yesterday...

Yesterday we went and picked up Lucy (the stray boxer who wandered up to my husband's grandfather's farm). She is the sweetest thing - just wants attention and love. She has yet to bark or whine. We instantly fell in love with her.

Two problems: she isn't housetrained and tries to chase the cats. We didn't let her chase them, just grabbed her and told her "NO." The cats are very traumatized by it all. They do have their claws still and I am afraid they will scratch her face/eyes. Some people have told me just to let them bop her on the face with a paw and then she will leave them alone, but I am not sure. It seems like could be such a traumatic event for everyone involved!

I can handle the housetraining, but I am so worried about the cats. I want for all of us to live peacefully together and not have to constantly keep the cats away from the dog. Our cats and are very people-oriented and wants lots of attention too, so we all need to be able to be in the living room together without chaos ensuing!

Any suggestions????

Hi asef, First thank you for the kind words for Bugsy, Yes he is comfortable now. Second, thats great you got Lucy. I'll bet she's beautiful. I don't have much advice on the cat problem, but somebody
on the forums will come up with the right idea. I think what you said, repeating no to her when she chases cats and the time out method should make her understand they all got to get along. (time out is when you get your dog to lie down and tell no repeatally until she settles down to submission.) The bop on the head may work, but I would worry about scratched eyes or other damage. Cats have sharp claws and know how to us them. Usally cats give a few warning punches first before the main hit. I'm sure someone will come up with a better idea. Let's hope so. She sounds like a wonderful little girl. By the way how did the mouse traps work, if they did at all. Good Luck Greg O.

Thanks

Greg - thanks, I posted on a "cat" forum here and hopefully will get some advice.

The mouse trap thing - it is pretty funny, it did work, but not how you think. I was putting them up there and one went off. it scared me and I jumped and yelled just a little. of course, both cats were there and they went running. neither one has hardly even looked at the cage since! Plus, Lucy's presence is their main focus right now.

Lucy is wonderful - my only question is her background. She looks JUST like a boxer, only she is about 35 lbs. She isn't a puppy - she was in heat a month ago (why we had to wait to take her). I have heard there really isn't such thing as a miniature boxer - but that is EXACTLY what she looks like. If she is a boxer mixed with some other breed, then that other breed's only characteristic that showed up is her height. Her face, ears (uncropped), head, chest, shoulders, eveerything - Boxer. ?????

Hi asef, Sometimes a dog is born the runt of the litter. They have all the features of a breed, but are just small. I once had an Afghan hound with the same problem. He was a beautiful Afghan, but he was small in size. He met the Afghan standard, except his size. His was Tyme (Tim-me) We called him Timmy to little. I told everbody he was a condo-ghan. Thats an Afhgan Hound for people that live in condominums. An apartment size dog. I believe Lucy is a pure breed Boxer. Because is female and females are smaller in size than males. She may have been born the runt of the litter. Size does'nt matter if your not showing her in conformation, you still can put her into obediance or agility. The important thing is to give her plenty of love and attention, she'll be the biggest dog in your heart. Good Luck with cats, hope someones comes up with idea. Greg o.

condo-ghan! That is too funny. Afghans have such a gentle and calm look to them - unlike Lucy! She is hyper as anything! I take her on two walks a day and she could just go and go! But she is also so eager to please that I can tell she is internally fighting with being rowdy and being calm to get petted. She is adorable. Although, I took her to this big dog park on Tuesday night. She somehow ended up in about 3 fights. I couldn't tell if she started them, or if she still thought they were playing or what. No one got hurt or anything - no biting, just growling and rolling around. It is really diappointing for me because that was a huge open space where I thought I could take her and let her run, run, run. We are going to try again on Satruday and pay more attention to whether it is her starting them or what. I could tell she loved being there, though. Of course, every dog she got into a tiff with was way bigger than her. I just don't want anyone getting hurt!

On that note, I saw the rescue of the week - Delilah on the homepage here. She looks JUST like Lucy - only Lucy has a lot more brown and only a little white. But size-wise, they are the same. We have a vet appt on MOnday, so maybe the vet can tell me her age - I think she just might be under a year!

The cat situation hasn't gotten that much better, though. I am just trying to be patient. We'll see.

Lucy doesn't even notice Josie (the snake). I got Josie out last night, though and I think she could tell that there was a new smell around - she slithered a lot faster than usual!

Wow, I just realized It's been months since we dicussed our reptile buddys. My Ball Phyton Gloria came down with a cold. I didn't know they catch colds, but they can. I noticed when I was handling her one day it sound like she weezing. They only have one lung. My vet that cares for my boxer also is a very good reptile vet. I'm am lucky to have that. There are not a lot of reptile vets in my area. He did a physical on Gloria and gave her a shot and gave me a antibionic that I have administer twice a day. That aways fun because she doesn't like to open her month very wide. You have to put a eyedroper with the medicine in it at the front of her month, as she open you have to roll it to the back of her mouth. Then squeeze the medicine in. She just spits it out. The good thing is that it's working. She don't weeze and she is more active now. Well hope to hear more about your snakes and have a happy holiday Greg O

Well Gloria got over her cold and is doing well. I had to take her into the vet for a series of antibonic shots. That was an expensive venture. She is worth it. I believe if you going to have pets, such as reptiles, you have to be prepared to take care of them. So many times I hear of people that just give up on thier reptile pets as soon as it gets a little costly. I certainly hope they don't do that with their boxers, when they get sick. Gloria and Monte are two great Ball Pythons. Have a great New Year everybody that has snakes. Greg

Hi, Greg! Hope your holidays were great!

Glad to hear Gloria got over her cold. It's good that you were able to pick up on the problem so early. Snakes are very good at hiding illness!

Glad to hear, too, that you a good reptile vet. The vet that sees our two dogs is terrified of snakes. She does always ask about our boas, though. She has even called to ask advice on reptile issues.

Take care.

Hi Bxrlvr, (Michelle) Thank you I had great Christmas. New Years too, even with the hang over, HaHa. It's good to hear from you. Lately no one has writing on this tread. Must not have many snake people out there. Yes Gloria is doing fine and yes Dr. G as we call him, real name Dr. Greenwall is a great reptile vet. He has pulled Gloria and Monte both out of arms way. I am lucky we have him, not many good reptile vets around here. I notice all lot of people view this tread, but not many reply. Hope to hear from you again. Have a great day. Greg O
