big doesn't mean cross breed! apallo stands at 26 1/2 inches at the withers and hes just 14 months old. He weighes 83#. I have his mother and my uncle has his father and grandmother. his mom only weighs 53# and is 22 1/2 inches tall.His dad isn't much taller but alot wider! I'm not sure where Apallo got his log legs from but he's all boxer not mixed! Just gives me more to love!

I don't mean to sound dumb - but when you measure you're boxer it says to measure from the "withers" - what are "withers"???

The withers is the point between the shoulder blades where the neck meets the back. It is the point of reference because it doesn't move up and down as the head does (well, not unless the dog sits down LOL).

It seems like in America, they like their boxers really slim and pretty lightweight.

The thing is that the boxer, according to the standard in all countries as far as I know, is supposed to be a medium sized dog.

So what is the cut off for medium. Most people would probably lable a 70-75 pound dog large.

Im not saying it's right or wrong, and I like my dogs to have more substance than a lot of what I have seen...but 80+ pound dogs are probably a bit out of standard, as I dont think they could be considered medium.

My pups are on the large side for boxers as well. Both of them are close to 26 inches tall, and my girl is about 62 pounds. My boy is about 72.

The bottom of the standard is 22 1/2 inches for a female and I have seem them that size in the show ring and I just think that is way too small...on the other hand 27 or 28 inches is probably too tall...

Not just probably - definitely. The standard in most countries states that the limit for a dog is 25 inches. Anything above that, per the breed standard, should be penalised. It might not be penalised, but it should be - and all standards state that. What's the point in a breed standard if people ignore it? If they want a dog the size of a bullmastiff, then they should get a bullmastiff!! Not bastardise the boxer.

Most standards around the world also indicate (or outright state) the correct weight. And for a dog of 24", that is around 66lb. For a taller dog, one can expect proportionately more (or less for a shorter dog). But something in the 80lb+ range is becoming ridiculous

Btw: the bottom of the height range for bitches is 21" (21.5 in the US). The maximum is 23" (23.5" in the US).

kinda of a dead thread, but I haven't been able to check in a while. Diesel's big too. last time I checked in Feb. or March, he was 27-1/2 at the shoulders, and 101 lbs and I think he was 18 months. Both parents were boxers. he was out of a small litter, all his 2 brothers have turned out big too.

My Hummer was a rescue and came to us huge at 2 yrs old ,hence the name Hummer. He weighs 107 lbs he'll be 5 yrs old in Nov...He has AKC papers stating full boxer and even came with his pedigree lineage..so I'm assuming he's all boxer.
I have read that the German line of boxers are bred to have longer legs and bigger heads, which Hummer has.
I have attempted to contact his breeder to find out if he has German bloodlines..no reply.I'm asked all the time if he's Mastiff.
I take no offence as he is beautiful and absolutely the sweetest boy I could have ever hoped for..
Our new boy Dempsey age 2 and half, weighs in at 60 lbs but looks much smaller next to Hummer..for that manner any boxer does

Actually, the AKC standard states that

Size: Adult males 23 to 25 inches; females 21½ to 23½ inches at the withers. Proper balance and quality in the individual should be of primary importance since there is no size disqualification.

I could have sworn there used to be language about bitches not going over the height and dogs not going under, but I could be wrong.

There was but it was dropped when the standard was revised in '05. From the '99 standard...
