I came home last night and had to go back to work for a couple of hours. I must have left the kitchen door open (rule number one = kitchen door must be shut!) and Storm had got into the rubbish. I walked into the lounge and there was blood all over the carpet & her mouth/legs. I panicked!!! She was her normal happy self but with blood running from her mouth. She took a drink of water and the water turned red. I called bf & he told me to call the vet immediatley. The vet told me to check her mouth and wipe away the blood with a cloth to see if it was a cut and to describe how big/deep. She had cut her tongue along the side (not deep). I have now learnt that tongues are very hard to stop bleeding! Luckily im fine with blood etc (espically when it comes to Stormy) but I was freaking out! The vets advice was to get her to stay calm (she was acting her crazy self – running around, grabbing toys, blood going everywhere) and to try to get her to clamp down on a towel. She thought it was a never ending tug of war and the bleeding slowed down and stopped after about 2 hours. Being white she looked terrible as the blood was on her front legs & face & was very obvious. It must have been a tin can from the rubbish. I felt terrible despite the fact that she should not have got into the rubbish but if only i had shut the damned door!

This morning she was fine and wondering what the heck all the extra attention was for!

I just wanted to share just in case anyone goes through this. And remember (as I will for ever more) to keep your furbabies away from rubbish containers!

Oh, poor baby Storm.....and poor mom!! I'm visualizing this, and you must have been absolutely frantic with all that blood, especially with her being white. And her, probably with a big grin on her face, like "What's all the excitement about?" This is the first time I've ever heard of this happening, but had often wondered about my Grunt getting into the garbage and the empty cans that he would just love to get into to lick every last morsel and drop out of!! So sorry this happened to you. And thanks for reminding the rest of us to keep our rubbish cans covered and secured. Sending healing vibes to your baby, and hope she's all healed up real soon.

Every trash can I have had lids and the one for the kitchen has a footpedal that you step on and the top slides open to each side and you throw you garbage in. To emoty it you lift off the whole can and the inner can holds the garbage. This has kept both of my dogs from getting into the garbage even one time. Just a thought to people who may be looking for a better way out of the problem. I bought it at Target (USA) for about 75 dollars, stainless steel. Yes expensive but well worth having to ever deal with dog in the garbage. (It looks kind of like a silver bullet )

I am glad Storm was okay! Blood in any form on our kids, fur and skin is always so scary. I have a white boy as well so I can only imagine the sight that must have been.

Wow! How frightening for you. My trash is in a built in trash cabinet in my kitchen. You need to pull on the cabinet door to get the trash to come out, so we are safe there. However, I am always nervous when someone is loading the dishwasher. Joe always comes over and trys to lick a dish or two. I'm so afraid that he may lick a knife and cut his tongue. I'm glad to hear that Storm is okay. Have you calmed down yet??
Cheryl :)

ehh it took bailey about a week to figure out how to use the footpedal do life the lid just enough for him to get his head under and flick it open.
we have to empty it EVERYTIME WE GO OUT!!!

We have a foot pedal rubbish bin! Storm worked it out a few weeks back and I have been trying to find one that has a 'boxer proof' lid. Until then we had made the rule that the kitchen door was shut. As I said it was my mistake cause I was the one who left the kitchen door open & I still feel guilty. This is one mistake that I will never forget!!!

Yes thanks Cheryl I have calmed down now :) Storm is fine - had a good bath & you wouldnt know anything ever happened.

Crazy Stormy! You just used up one of your mom's lives!
Sometimes I think our babies do stuff like this just to keep us on our toes!
Give Stormy a kiss and tell her to not do crazy stuff like that for anttention any more!
