Foreign/Ethnic foods..what do you like? what's good?

pie....... as in pastry with a filling.... like mince or stew or chicken!!!!

and mash .... mashed potatoe!

Ok sounds just like two things my Mom makes. The first one is Chicken/Turkey Pot pie, which is Chicken or Turkey in a pie-type crust with a stew type gravy, with veggies (usually carrots and/or peas) but no mashed potatoe.

The other it sounds like is what we call Shephard's Pie which is a layer of mashed potatoe, covered by a layer of chopped meat (what you call mince I guess) a layer of corn (OFF the cob ) and then all over with the potatoe..ohhh gotta call Mom and have her make some!!

I dont recall having anything in a green thick sauce..don't think I'd want to try it either with the sauce.. EEL?? As in the long snake like water thing?? Ohh Lordy, NO, that would NEVER cross my lips..to think of it, it would never even get NEAR my lips

And whats with warm beer (brew..don't know exactly what its called in the UK)..beer here has to be ICE cold!! heehee

See the green thick sauce thing must be an english thing.... as i have never had anything like it...... Just Steak Pie which is chopped streak in gravy.... or mince pie which in minced beef in gravy....... scotch pie (eh unknown meat in a wee round crunchie pie crust) oh and shepperds pie...


mmmmmm i love mince, neeps and tatties too....wee scottish dish, which is minced beef with gravy and onions.... mashed potato and turnip (or swede whatever you call it)

Ha ha ..I can see we have whetted your appetite for good old British grub!! ...Eels are a traditional cockney dish. (they are those snake like fish )..we also have Jellied eels, where they are cooked and put into jelly (aspic), they are traditionally sold at the seaside, on fish stalls, along with whelks, cockles etc, Tubby Isaac's fish stall at Folkestone is a favorite haunt!!...pie and mash is never pie and mash without that liqour, It is what makes it taste so good...and the pies have to have a burnt top, it adds to the flavour, and they are always served upside down, so you can cut the bottom open, to let the liqour in!!

Please tell me that people from Bradford are not "traditional cockneys" (what exactly is cockney??) DO NOT eat eel!! LOL. Hubbys family is from Bradford. don't know where in England it is..just know the name of the city/village/town..whatever you call it

hay if you'd eaten eel you know!!!!!!!! can't even put it by my mouth.... but then i'm a scot not a cockney..... and i think Bradford is in the Midlands and Britbox correct me if i'm wrong here but a Cockney is from the London area

Ha ha ha I am laughing so much over this thread, I can see I am really confusing you, I don't mean to...so I'll try and explain!! to be a 'proper' 'Cockney' you have to be born within the sound of Bow Bells... Bow is an area of east London...although most of us in London consider ourselves cockneys too because of our accent, we are not really in the true sense....my dad however, is a real cockney, as he fulfills the strict criteria
Bradford is 'up north'...and will have their own regional favorite foods, probably not Eels...so I think your'e safe!!!!!

Humm, now I want to search "Bradford" and see what its like. I love researching family trees and finding out info on ancestors! I have quite a bit of English blood in me (although the Italian blood seems to have won out with most things..)

Ha ha ha ...Donna I can't stop laughing, No living up north is not a bad thing, It's just a London expression...anywhere outside greater London is almost a different country to us!!!....whilst were on the subject of London grub, I forgot to tell you about faggotts, a kind of meatball dish that is also traditional fare!!!...then there is boiled bacon, pease puddin' and carrots...I could go on and on...but I am getting hungry!
