Flea/tick preventitive.....

Please don't use the Hartz (or any other "over the counter") flea and tick preventitive! I work for a vet and I have seen some cats and dogs come in having seizures (sp) - when we ask the owner if he/she has put anything on the dog/cat, they tell us the "OTC" stuff! The ingredients are very potent in the stuff!
Where I live, we have fleas and ticks. My dogs are on the Frontline Plus (have been for years) and we don't have either one of the pesky bugs here! :D We do have folks up here that will put their dogs (that are just left outside 24/7 - hard to bite my tongue with them!;) ) that do either Advantage or Revolution and get a tick collar. Hope this helps some!

My vet advised to not use those over the counter type flea preventives,it can cause damage to liver etc. I did have my dogs on frontline plus, but when I took one of my dogs for a booster shot, they advised they no longer carried the frontline. We live in texas and mosquitos can be a problem also, so they had switched to advantage because it deters mosquitos, and kills fleas and ticks. Acually this is the first year in about 4 years that I have had to use any flea preventive. I just keep checking them out every summer, and I just happened to notice one on one of my dogs.

I just realized when I got home and looked on the box, it wasnt advantage my vet changed to, its advantix. So far no problems, they've been on it for 2 months now. I did use frontline prior to this.

I will not be using Frontline... My Bichon had Frontline and only a few days after putting it on, there were fleas! I saw about 10 fleas! Probably more! I quickly gave her a flea bath, and when I need some more flea treatment, it will be Advantage.
My 4 cats have been using Hartz flea stuff or Zodiac and have had no problems whatsoever. I never heard about any animals having bad reactions or anything like that. My cat Miss Kitty (no longer with us) had a flea collar, and my cousin noticed that there were a bunch of fleas right under the collar! I have never bought a flea collar since. Can't remember the brand, but maybe that was the problem... anyone know of any good flea collars?

I used to use Frontline then switched to one of the flea/tick collars. Then one day I found a huge huge tick, got bigger 10 times its size with my poor baby's tasty blood and got very paniced, went to the vet, took care of it and switched back to Frontline. We don't have as many brands here and I believe Frontline is the best one so far. I will try the garlic though. BTW, does it smell like it smells on people:p

frontline/advantage, not RX Products

Just a note as I saw some people referring to hartz, etc, as "over the counter" remedies. Frontline, Advantage, Bio Spot etc., are all 'over the counter' remedies. :) You dont have to have an RX to purchase them. FYI.

We use Advantage.......

because my vet told us NEVER to use any over the counter products. Supposedly there is a chemical in them that can cause dogs and cats to seize. He has experiences several cats in the past year that were brought to his office in seizures that ended up dying within 24 hours of having it applied and he doesn't recommend it to his clients for dogs either due to this reason.

That is very true, especially of Hartz stuff for cats. We have had three so far this summer DOA. Very sad. Collars can be pretty toxic too, mostly to cats and puppies.

Bio spot and Hartz are over the counter in the sense that you have to get Frontline, Advtage or Advantix from your vet or online. I'm pretty certain that they are not available in retail stores.

Unless you are referring to the fact that they can be ordered on line at places like PetMedsDirect. Which isn't the best idea. One does have to have a prescription from their vet for flea and HW preventatives. There are currently law suits out (I don't have the specifics though) on the websites that sell these items sans prescription. I have also heard of people who used the websites only to be sold expired medication.
