Finding a Breeder

It has been 12 1/2 years since we brought home our best friend and unfortunately he died 2 years ago. After much lamentating we are now ready to get a new puppy. I have tried to find a good breeder in our area and have sent emails to several, which have gone unanswered (with one exception).

We will spend a great deal of time looking for the right breader and lineage, however we need to find a breeder. Our goal is to find a puppy by the summer if possible.

Any suggestions! We do not want to travel too much out of southern Ontario if possible.

I would try the section on BW that lists breeders who do all of the appropriate health testing to ensure healthy pups. You can see this list by clicking this link... http://www.boxerworld.com/breeders

If that doesn't help, try a local boxerclub to see if they can offer some names and numbers to try. If that doesn't work, maybe rescuing a boxer could be an option??

Welcome to the BW. This site is full of valuable info.

Keep emailing breeders who you are interested in. Please keep in mind that we breeders sometimes get at least several emails daily, and I must confess, that sometimes I get a little overwhelmed. I try to answer them all, but sometimes it takes a month to get it done.

Do check out the health tested breeders page. These are people that do their best to be sure every puppy they bring into this world has the best chance of a long and healthy life.

I am going through the same thing looking for a breeder to get my pup by summer! I would agree, start looking here at BW at the breeders that do the appropriate health testing...also what I have been doing is searching the internet by putting in boxer breeders - minnesota (closest breeders i can find) and so much comes up. Then I write the breeders, and it really weeds them out if you ask a BUNCH of questions. There is a spot here that someone once directed me to, about what questions to ask the breeders. I can't remember where it is, maybe someone can help me out...but it's here somewhere, and that was a lot of help. You might have to travel a bit - I'll have to to find a respectable breeder - but it will be worth it! Good luck and keep up the searching!

Thank you all very much for your helpful suggestions. Some of the things you suggest we have already tried and we will follow up on the others.

I think that one of the concerns this time is that we had such a wonderful experience with our guy and it has been suggested that we are not likely to be as fortunate this time.

I was recently warned about looking for a breeder in Southwestern Ontario because there has been so much in breeding. Our first boxer came out of this area however...

Inbreeding is not bad if done properly. Many boxers in the US and Canada are inbred and linebred. Many of the most healthy lines I know of are inbred or linebred. Both are similar.

So don't be scared away by this. Inbreeding is blamed for so much and some of the worst temperaments and health problems I see in my grooming shop are not inbred at all. Just poorly bred by individuals that are in it for the money. :( For example, the cockers I do from show lines are almost always healthier and have sound temperaments. The biters with bad knees are usually from pet shops or BYB.

Talk to the breeders and take a look at their dogs. Don't be scared off by rumors.
