Finally got some Greenies

I had been wanting to buy some Greenies for Riley for some time now, but several things have prevented it. I'd either plain out forget about them once I got to the store, the store would be out of them, or they'd only have the big expensive packs available (which I wouldn't buy before knowing he liked them). Well today, I was at Petco and they had some sold as individuals at the check out counter. So finally, I bought one for Riley. He absolutely loved it!! So much in fact that I'm very much looking forward to giving him another. That is of course, after a couple of questions are answered.

1 - How often should Greenies be offered as a treat?? I obviously want to give him some because he loved them, but I don't want to feed to many!!

2 - Where is the cheapest place to buy these at?? They're so expensive, I'd really like to find a place with a good deal for a bulk purchase.

3 - Do you go by the weight group on the package?? For example, today he the one made for 50-100lb dogs, but there is also one size bigger. Have you ever fed those to your boxer??

HI,the greenies are great,i give my dogs everyother day i give the large, i sell them at the store i work at,i seen them at petco and the mark up they have is nuts ,if you have a indepedant pet store near ya i'd check them out we sell alot of them in bulk so much cheaper than singles on a differant note i vowed not to ever go to a petco again after learning how thier small animals are treated

Mandy if you are looking to get them I suggest buying in bulk because it will be much more cheaper for you in the long run. I know that

www.drsfostersmith.com sell them in bulk and they have various sizes. Also

www.jefferspet.com sells them in bulk but I don't think they have as many diff sizes as above. I have never ordered from Foster/Smith but I order from Jeffers all the time. Jeffers is quick and efficent and I usually get my order two days after making it. But look around and see who offers the best prices for you

My girls love greenies too, BUT Baylee has bladder problems and needs her PH at a certain level. Well, lowe and behold the vet couldn't figure out why her PH was so high. We figured that out pretty quick, greenies have chorphyll in them and it causes an increase in PH. Just thought I'd let you know, if your dog is on a special diet I'd watch what you give it. Baylee can't have anything with kelp or alfalfa in it either because it does the same thing. Anyway, Brit absolutley loved them, but I feel bad giving one dog one and not the other.:rolleyes: Anyway, I found that those bulk bags were the best bet in the $$$ area.

Hi. My name is Jody Hanson, and I am contacting you on behalf of the manufacturers of Greenies. We recently became aware of this thread that included several questions/comments about Greenies, and I wanted to help answer some of those questions.

Q: How often should Greenies be offered as a treat?
A: Greenies can be given to your dog as a treat once or twice daily. We recommend that you decrease the amount of regular diet fed by 10% to account for the added calories in the treat. Greenies are not intended as a complete diet and should not make up more than 25% or your dog’s total diet.

Q: Do you go by the weight group on the package?
A: It's very important to make sure your dog gets the size of Greenies that is appropriate for his/her weight.
Greenies ® Jumbo for dogs weighing 100 + pounds
Greenies® Large for dogs weighing 50 - 100 pounds
Greenies® Regular for dogs weighing 20 - 50 pounds
Greenies® Petite for dogs weighing 10 - 20 pounds
Greenies® Lil' Bit™ for dogs weighing under 10 pounds and/or under 6 months old

Comment: "...greenies have chlorophyll in them and it causes an increase in pH."
Response: The following information comes from Dr. Lon Lewis, a board certified veterinary nutrition expert. Greenies have a touch of chlorophyll in them, but regardless of the amount, chlorophyll has no effect on urine pH levels. Greenies are high in protein, which tends to acidify, or lower, urine pH.
A process called "post pranadial alkaline tide" occurs following consumption of any food. Right after eating any food, gastric acid is secreted in the stomach, and the kidney compensates by excreting alkaline (high pH) urine. As the food is digested and absorbed, depending on the food, it will lower pH, raise pH, or not affect pH. Since Greenies are moslty protein, as that protein is converted into energy, the pH level in the urine is lowered. (Sorry if that's more than you ever wanted to know about urine pH).

My vet is the one that told me I can't let Baylee have the greenies. Since she said it may be the way her body processes them and that is why the ph gets high. I just wanted to clarify that. Also, thanks Jody for the info on greenies, I have found with loving my animals so much that I actually don't mind talking about their bodily functions LOL. Jaimie

My girls LOVE greenies! You just say the word and they come running. I wish they were cheaper though because they sure do love them and they would eat one every day. It gets rather expensive and I do buy the packs of 8. Wish I could get a pack of 100 or something and much cheaper! Best thing I've ever given my girls, I don't worry about it like I do with pig ears or rawhide. Chunks don't fall off or get really soggy like the other things. Go GREENIES!!!

Where I buy Greenies you can purchase the large box like what the singles are sold out of. It is pretty expensive and I haven't done it myself, but we've just entered the world of Greenies recently so who's to say I won't give in to the huge box! Maybe a small local store would carry them like this or be willing to order them for you in the large box.
