Chauncey is a brindle boxer with natural ears and is going to be 8 years old this summer. I have never had any medical problems until now. Three weeks ago he had an inner ear infection and the ear drum burst. There had never been any problem detected with his heart but the infection affected his heart . When they did a chest x-ray they said that one half of his heart was larger than the other. With the inner
ear problem he had no sense of balance and hit his eye on
something and now has a large ulcer. They have taken away
the bad tissue twice now but it is not healing. My vet thinks I should have a procedure done called punctate
kerratotomy. I am afraid with the heart condition that he
will not survive the surgery. They said that boxers are
very prone to eye ulcers. I am hoping someone might have
been through this with their dog. I would appreciate any
suggestions or advise.

Butch had something similar happen. The surface of his eye
got scratched, and a cloudy spot formed. I don't know if this is what you mean.

The vet thought the spot might heal by itself, but it didn't. So she sewed Butch's eye shut - the 3rd eyelid stitched to the upper lid. It was like that for a couple weeks, and I had to put drops in daily.

Butch was a big, muscular dog. People would often cross to the other side of the street when they saw him. And it was worse with the eye stitched. He looked like a pirate!

There wasn't any tissue that had to be cut away.

I hope all goes well with your dog.

Our past Duke had a balance problem due to a brain tumor, he had 3 ulcers. The first 2 showed up on his right eye and the vet gave me special eye drops and they cleared up in about 3 weeks just in time for him to get one on his left eye I used the same drops and was lucky I guess, because it also was gone in a couple of weeks. He couldn`t have surgery either because of his health I don`t know what I would have done if the drops hadn`t worked. I wish I could tell you somethig to help.

my duke has had two months of treatment and lots of drops, with a scrapping, debridement and finally a keratomy to promote healthy tissue to heal the eye. Is that what you went through. He will start steroid drops next week. His humongous ulcer has healed excep for a little spot. Amazingly, he can still see out of this eye. It has been a very traumatic time for us. My vet, bless his heart, called every specialist he could find on this subject to make sure he had the right treatment. hoping to hear from you.

My 13 year old boxer had an eye ulcer about 3-4 years ago. She had to have surgery. They treated ulcers different then. After the surgery they put some kind of glue on her eye. It looked horrible and took a long time to heal. My mother's boxer had an ulcer last year and they performed a keratomy on her. Zoie's recovery didn't seem to take as long as my Mulligan. My Mulligan also had a very serious heart condition her last 3 years of life. She had a horrible growth on her chest that I was terrified to have removed because I didn't want to put her under with her heart condition. The growth eventually started to bleed and we had to have it removed. She made it through the surgery with flying colors! I totally sympathize with your concerns.... I guess the question would be what would happed if you didn't do the procedure.... Is it possible that Chauncey will lose his eye? If so, and you've tried everything else, then the surgery may be your only option.

:) My dog Spud, had a really bad cut on one eye and an (old)ulcer on the other at the same time. We are fortunate enough to have an excellent veterinarian opthamoligist in our area. He put numbing eye drops in both eyes and did the surface debridment (sp?) and put contact lenses on both eyes. She just sat there while this was all done. I had to do the ointments Muro 128 and the antibiotis numerous times a day and put on generous amounts of them. I am happy to report that we had a successful recovery. It took some time for the cloudiness to go away and she lost one of her contacts lenses after about two weeks, but all went well. I had had previous surgeries (the ones described by all the others in response to this) and this was way less stressful to my dog than any other and did not involve putting them under. GOOD LUCK!

PS He also told me that he had never seen an ulcer that did not eventually heal. That made me feel a little less aprehensive about the ulcer. It is however something to treat ASAP.

Rusty, my eight year old, had an eye ulcer. After several attemps by my vet to rmove it, and using eye drops, it was still there. We were referred to an optomologist, who removed it. Things went great, and he healed up nicely. I think the worst part of the whole thing for him was wearing the "lampshade" on his head for a couple weeks.
