Does your boxer do this with his/her food?

Layla has a slightly messy habit (and hence maybe a bit annoying ;) ). When she is eating, she gets a whole mouthful of kibble and then walks away from her bowl...she walks all around the room and slowly lets pieces of it fall out her mouth! I have no idea why she does this, but she does it at every single meal with at least two mouthfulls! She eats the rest of it with no problem, but for some reason she finds it necessary to leave a trail of her food around the room! Sometimes a couple hours after she has finished her meal she will go around and eat all the dropped kibbles if I haven't already picked them up, but she doesn't always... Just wondering if anyone else's boxer(s) does this? Or is it just my strange little girl??? Haha :D

I will be interested to see what others say. Nino does the exact same thing. He dribbles a little in a couple different rooms but he never goes back to get it---I just have to clean it up. We have never been able to figure out why he might do this. I have never had another dog that did the same thing. Nino is 98 lbs so he loves his food....I can't believe that he is willing to part with some of it:)

Max does that too! He doesn't go far to drop his food...just in the kitchen but like yours, he takes a mouthful and then slowly drops a few pieces around his dish and patio door. Sometimes he eats them after he gobbles down his meal but usually he just leaves them for me to clean up. My husband scatters his clothing around (although he never eats them)...maybe its a male thing!?!:D Denise

Abby does it, too. But after she drops her's, she'll run off and then gradually sneak up on the food and then pounce on it and eat it. A hunting instinct she's trying to fulfill? Not sure. :D

Yup -- Murray does this too -- since he was a puppy. Can't tell you how many times I've walked into the kitchen with just my socks on and stepped on one of those hard pieces of kibble! smashicon

Rocky always did that. But, I think you'll find they aren't dropping them from their mouths. I'd bet you're feeding kibbles dry. If so, they stick to their big slimy lips and they drop off as they walk away from their food bowls.

We always moisten Indy's kibble as recommended by his breeder. No more Hansel and Gretel trail to follow. Ditto for Avalanche.

:p Sophie also eats Eagle Pack (Holistic) and it is very small kibble. She does drop a few pieces, but like Tom I think it sticks to her loose lips and drops off. She does most certainly clean it up tho. Sophie is fed twice a day now, but she is not a "gobbler" for that reason I don't moisten her food as she will come back later, usually after a bm to finish it up.

Magnum is a "dribbler", Omar isn't. I don't know if it sticks to Magnum's lips or he's seriously just dropping them. He walks away from his bowl for his first few mouthfulls, drops some and goes back. He does clean up after himself though. Magnum sometimes likes to have a bm too halfway through and then he'll go back and finish the rest of his food.

Omar on the other hand, is a gobbler. He takes huge mouthfulls and practically swallows them. Then he likes to be burped by Greg.

Maddux doesn't leave a trail of food but he does send it FLYING! I dress up dinner with goodies, canned food, etc. so it's wetter than breakfast and I have scrubbed the walls up to five feet high where bits have stuck. But he always cleans up the areas he can reach.

Tom,

This is definitely not the case with Nino. His food is moistened and warmed. Before he starts eating he purposefully gets some in his mouth and takes it to the other room and dribbles it all in the same spot it is not falling from his lips. I could understand if he was saving it for later but he doesn't want it after its cold and never goes back for it:)
