Till now, after a year of training Oski, the recall is still not 100% especially when he decides he has other better things to do

He does come back ultimately but that it after he has venture off track, makes a big turn etc before he finally walks to me at his own pace.

During training time, he does come to me in a straight line but he sure does take his own sweet time, walking so slowly, looking around etc.

Jingo comes pretty much every time we call her. She's really a very good girl.

Milo on the other hand has selective hearing! Sigh... He'll generally come if Jingo comes running though.

Sera will come if food is involved.......usually.

Sera will come to go outside.........occasionally.

Sera will come when I whistle.......most of the time.

Sera has a mind of her own.........all the time!

One of the best training methods I've been shown is to play hide and seek with your boxer. If they hear you, but don't see you, their curiosity overtakes them and they'll come running. When they do, plenty of doting and praise and a treat or two will make them want to come whenever you call them, unless......

he thinks responding to your call will mean a loss of freedom. You call him/her when you are going out and the dog will be confined. You call him to put him in his crate. It's a Pavlovian response. If being confined, or cooped up is what happens when he comes it will naturally make him reluctant to come. A good trick is to call and then give the dog its freedom. Call him to pet him or play with him. Make it worth the dog's while to come to you. Do this often and he will respond more positively to your command. Make it more interesting for the dog to be with you.

My wife and I play the hide and seek game with Indy. One of us will hold him while the other goes out of his sight. Then we call Indy and he comes running. Then the one who held him will go to another area and call out to him. He will initially go to the last place he saw us, then begin to search for the caller. We call him again and he usually pinpoints the source of the call and runs with great relish to find the caller.

He really seems to enjoy this game. When he finds the "hider" he gets showered with affection and praise. So if your dog is called more frequently for things he enjoys rather than confinement, or something he considers unpleasant, the hard part is over.

This doesn't work all the time.
Nika was only 8 weeks old, when I did that trick.
When I was standing behind the tree for a few minutes and she still didn't come look for me, I went looking for her and found her about 150 yards further, she was sitting before the fench of the dog-school where she had been a week earlier for the first time. :D
Nika is now 3 years old, and the trick still doesn't work with her!:D

However, the trick does work with Danco. He panics when he can't see you, and comes looking for you.

Kneesaa will come if you call her name almost every time... she sometimes gets distracted if there are alot of people around and everyone is trying to pet her... but we've tried to use her name with her commands to help her learn... so we say.."Kneesaa, sit!" and she will do it... she does it more often on the first try when we say her name than when we don't!
