Just wanted to let you know that the P in P/D stands for Puppy. I don't know anything about HOD but I do work at a vet part time so I do know about the food. Just wanted to tell you since someone mentioned maybe taking off puppy food to slow the growth. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. He is doing very well. He just hates being on lock down.
I feel so bad that he cant come out and play. But doctors rules! He is non-stop cring and I hate it.(not that hes cring just that I cant let play like a puppy should) Breaks my heart! We go back to the vet monday. I still have treated him for Demodectic mange.Poor lil.guy. But hes on all these meds and i do want to hurt his immune system more than it is.He is emproving every day. But that still doesn't mean its (hod) over. That would be nice for him. I just want him to be happy. We still have to lug his big butt up and down the stairs. And that shure does take alot out of ya! Well gotta go. Have fun everyone!

Why did they.....

I went to refill Dozers meds today. Last week they had him on 100mg. and they changed it to 200mg. I know alot about dogs but not MEDS. and I wanted to know can he get used to it? Is that why they uped his dose?
And i need some input please my lil.guy might not come out of this! We found a site. I want whom ever to read it. Me and my boyfriend talked and we are gonna do the treatment if Dozer gets any worse. I wont put him down!!!
Its called..... DOGLOGIC.COM when you get to the home page go to health on the side and click on HOD. Please let me know I'm STRESSIN!!!

I just looked at the website you gave and as I was reading, I realized that I had read this story and treatment advice back when I was panicing and searching every website I could on this disorder. I remeber writing all the info down and being prepared to provide it to my vet, but luckily the Z-pack(prednizone) worked wonders on my baby. I'm not really sure why they uped your meds, but I am a little concerned that Dozer's not getting any better, especially with the threat of putting him down:(. And he's soo young I hate to see soo many mg's. of meds. It DOES take a while and is a slow process to overcome, however, I'm not sure that the meds (or diet) he's on are really working (I'm not a vet, but I have had 1st hand experience with this) and this just doesn't sound good at all. If I were you, I would go with my gut feeling and what I thought was best for my baby.(even if it meant going against my vet at this point) The Tx on doglogics.com is certainly good, but I also had a good and quick experience with Z-pack and changing his food to adult. Well I hope I'm helping you, I really feel like I'm rambling, but in all honesty I don't like to hear that the meds are increasing instead of decreasing. Follow your heart as far as Tx goes and I wish you much luck and will be here for follow-ups. Oh, Axl also had Demo. mange also, and was on a few rounds of IVomec, which he hated, but really worked, he now has a beautiful coat. )))))))))))Healing vibes((((((((((( and good luck again.

Thank You

What is Z-pack our vet is up for any info. I printed all the things off of dog logic. And left it at the vets offices today. I was just wondering what that was. I don't think I've ever heard off that. I just spent $50.00 on his P/D DIET DRY food today (40 lb bag). I had to take him off the wet food they said it wasn't good for him if he eats itfor along time. Thanks any more info my vet would love it.

Just following your post! Hope your baby is doing better! Z-pak (zithromax is an antibiotic used on humans...it works wonders but is fairly expensive. Usually it comes in a 3-5 pak and you take one a day to clear up any nasty bacteria in the body. The key to using this type of drug is to make sure to follow the dosage requirements, if you start the meds, make sure and finish them or else you can eventually make the animal/human drug resistant to the z-pak in the future. It is a wonderful drug, expensive, I have never heard of using it on an animal, but hey if it worked for one, maybe it will work for you! Good luck with your baby!

I was searching thru Axl's records to see what all I could find to help you. I found my statement from the last hospital stay when HOD was discovered. This is what all he had. 2 small x-rays (which he had to be sedated for), joint tap, cytology, Dexamethasone injection, morphine injection, subQ fluids (IV), and Deramaxx 100mg. I'm not sure, but I'm wondering if the Deramaxx is considered like (Z-pak). When I was told of his meds, my vet said it was z-pak, children's strenth, and that is what healed him. However, I didn't see zithromax listed as his meds that's why I was wondering if it was the Deramaxx. Deramaxx is an NSAID drug which is a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It controls pain and inflammation; this also classifies aspirin, which you could give 1omg every 12hours. IF the NSAID drug doesn't work, then the next option is prednisone, which cannot be given with an NSAID and is more powerful. If you would like, I have no problem calling my vet to clear up any misunderstandings and find out exactly what med the z-pak was. But i'm 100% sure that she said that z-pak is what healed Axl so quickly. hope this helps some.

I don't understand why they would increase his medication without first telling you and explaining to you their reasoning. Go with your gut. If you want to try the Zpack which I'm sure wouldn't hurt, then I say go for it. Please keep us updated as I am worried about Dozer. We are sending lots of healing vibes and sloppy kisses to Dozer and hugs to you!!
