I could really just scream! I feel so sick! When I was doing the research to get Clover I came acrossed a lot of BYB - so sick of seeing the horrible living situation of these animals, I finally called my breeder in Ohio who refered me to a lot of different breeders, since she didn't have any pups, and doesn't plan on having any for a few years. I called, and grilled the breeders with questions, and finally came across one in Oklahoma who not only answered everything perfectly, but asked me questions, and seemed honest, caring, like she was doing it for the betterment of the breed, testing (or so she told me)...etc. She told me she had one litter, and another one of the way, so I waited for the 2nd litter - she sent pictures I pick out little Clover and everything seemed perfect. Fastforward to now - Clover beeder sent me a website link, and told me they now have their website up and running, I'm thinking great I'll be able to see the other pups growing up - so I go look at the website and my heart just breaks, the home page annouces that they have 27 puppies for sale, 27 puppies, no who in the world can properly raise 27 puppies!? I then proceed to look around the site and to my amazement, Jemma, Clover's mom has already had another litter of pups - Clover is just now 7 months old. And Choas - Clover's dad is the sire to almost every litter. Uggg - I can't believe this, I better calm down or else they will be getting a very nasty letter from me!

sucks about the info you found out. i think many of us have made the mistake of a BYB. we did it with our family's first dog.. our am. Cocker spaniel, who at 4mos came down with epilepsy. His short 6yrs with us was spent on meds. byb's dont always seem terrible on the outside, infact, they can be the most caring, nicest people around, but its the ignorance is what is so detrimental to the breed. perhaps instead of sending an angry letter, send a "nice" "curious" letter with lots of questions about their ethics and breeding practices. perhaps you can turn around and educate them anyways. i know your in Cali, and there are tons of responsible/reputible breeders out here, So-Cal, and NorCal... so maybe if you decide to get Clover a playmate you can start your search here in Cali! :D best of luck if you decide to write your "breeder"

i couldnt beileve that i bought a boxer fro mthe same one you did. whe ni called many boxer breeders i did the same thing u did and she also answered al lthe questions to my liking and i had given her information on my family. i thought i made a good choice in selecting her. but after we got mugsy home i checked on the webstite just to see if she posted my puppy as sold to us. and she did but i was surprised to see she had 15 new puppies and was seliing her "retired" females. i got a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach. my puppy is also sired by chaos and the dam is maryann. when we go him we took him to the vet the next day to get a check up as per thier request for the health garentee well he has a skin infection. his ears had scabs on them and he had some parasite that we are treating him for also. i emailed her and told her how could their vet miss all this at the appt he went on. she emailed back saying that her normal vet was out of town and the stand in vet didnt notice and infection. my husband and i were highly upset ! i mean there is no way u could have missed his ears. he wa also under wieght. possibly due to the parasites. she was feeding him science diet and bill jac but i am weaning him off that and putting him on solid gold. how is your lil g uy doing? any problems?

Clover was perfect on her weight when I got her and she seemed healthy, the vet (my vet) checked her out as healthy, but later on developed demodex mange (around 4 months), I called and e-mailed them to let them know so they could call Clover's littermate's, so they too could keep an eye out, just in case. They didn't and they are still breeding Jemma. UGGGGGGG. Clover's mange is gone, but I've been noticing her neck is starting to look like it did at the beginning stages like last time...luckily I had some left over cream that I've been applying...hoping it works. Clover is a beautiful dog, and so far other than mange and some dry skin she is okay, health wise. Now her attitude is a little different, or course she is 9 months now so that could have something to do with it I currently feed Clover Canidae (dry and wet), with Missing Link mixed in, due to her having loose stools ALL the time, didn't know if it was her food, I think so, since now they are perfect! YEAH! I started her out on Innova, then Natural Balance, then Wellness, and now Canidae (which we'll stick to). I hope your little guy gets better! Clover send slobbery kisses!

well i am sorry to hear about the mange. is that something he'll have problems for the rest of his life? i hope not ! well my little guy is doing better i took him to the vet again about 3 days after the intial visit becasue he got stung by something when we were playing outside and in three days he had gained a pound. you can still see his ribs a little bit. but when we got him he looked so fragile. i go tomrrow for the next round of shots and to do another fecal test to make sure the parasites are gone and to check on his skin infection. he still itches although not as much as when he first got here, but no sign of fleas. so i am not sure if the skin infection has cleared up entirely. but other then that he is a lovable puppy! and mugsy also sends his slobbery kisses !

Irresponsible breeders can be a bit of a con artist. They have learned what you want to hear and they tell you. They rely on people believing whatever they say.

But...............get proof. And the #1 thing that is most important is health testing. Okay, so I am broken record. But at least this is a tangible thing that shows the breeder is being responsible in some important way. So, if they claim to health test, ask to see the paperwork. See the Holter results, the Echocardiogram results, the Hip testing result.

Do not be shy - a responsible breeder will welcome the questions. An irresponsible breeder will either duck the questions or become hostile. Those on this forum have probably witnessed this on numerous occasions. Either one are a bad sign and definitely a breed to avoid!

My experience with BYB

I had never had experience with boxers until Abby two years ago. My father bought her from a BYB ($500 my dad thought this was reputable) without knowing any better. My cousin has her brother who has some health problem, but I'm not sure of it. It is heriditary and he will never get rid of it. Abby doesn't have that, but she does have hip dysplasia. My mom doesn't keep her weight down and at 2 1/2, she is in pain a lot.
Wilson was bought from a person for $50. My sister and her boyfriend heard about some boxers and went and got him because when they got there, they refused to leave him in that situation (BYB). He was covered with fleas to the point he probably would have died after a few days like that. They wanted to find a good breeder, but Wilson stole their heart. He is the best dog I have ever had the privilege to be around. He has gotten sick every few months and he loses around ten pounds each time, but we think it was bacteria on his water bowl. Except for this past blockage, he had not gotten sick for about five months.
I did not know about BYB until this site. I've always hated seeing the puppies in cages at the petstores, but finding out about puppy mills and the BYB make my skin crawl.

I'm so sorry that you were fooled by this "breeder". :( I found the website, and the thing that shocked me the most (other than the fact that they were selling 15 puppies at once!) was something written in their contract:

"Replacement puppy will be mutually agreed upon by both parties and will be of comparable quality. It is understood that the replacement puppy may not be from the exact same parents of original puppy."

Well if the puppy has a congenital defect I should freakin' HOPE they don't come from the same parents. I should HOPE those parents will never be bred again!!!! :mad: Grrrr ok steam is coming out of my ears now.

Anyways don't get too down about it. They seemed nice and told you what you wanted to hear and so naturally you trusted them. I guess this has taught me a lesson also. The next Boxer puppy I get I will be asking for the health testing papers. I feel pretty confident that my breeder is honest and does health test, and he is well known in the Midwest area. But STILL, I should be 100% confident, and I get that now. I guess you can never be too careful with these things, and you should always ask for actual proof.

I think you should definitely write to these people. It might not change them, but it's always worth a shot and you'll feel better. You have a beautiful girl by the way and I'm sure you don't regret getting her.

I know this is an old post but since I'm new to BW I thought I would give you my experience with this breeder. I too bought a female from them last summer. We didn't want a puppy to train and they had a girl that was almost 2. I asked tons and tons of questions and finally decided to buy her. We just now got done taking stitches out of her because she prolapsed very badly when she cam in heat. We had already scheduled her to be spayed when this happened. My vet wanted to wait to let her heal from this mess before going any further. He has been wonderful through this whole thing. I called him all the time to make sure I was doing what was right by keeping her calm and clean. She was in so much pain. She goes in next week to spayed. Anyway, to let you know what this breeder told me. "She NEVER did this in her previous heat and we should breed her!" She is a beautiful girl but is not of breeding quality or show quality, so why breed her? We sent several emails back and forth. In one she stated, "you bought her and it is up to you what you want to do with her and she said she was sorry for pressuring me to breed her. Then she sent another stating there was still enough time to breed her and she would help. I did not reply. We already have a female that is getting bred now because of a breeder contract, she will be spayed after her first litter. She is of excellent quality, breeder had all tests done and will be showing some of the puppies. Why would you breed a female with no tests and not of breed standard? I guess for money. Anyway,my girl is doing great now and I am glad we got her out of that horrible situation. She has a home for life and I could not imagine a day without her wiggly little butt.

Probably not. I know she is licensed. At least I had to sign some papers she had to send in. I am not against breeding, IF IT IS DONE RIGHT. And these people obviously just care about the money to be spitting out one litter right after another. At the time my girl was for sale they also had a retired female they were giving away. Any normal person with a heart would want her as a pet. I guess she was too old to produce and was of no use to them. Right now they only have 15 for sale, ONLY. I know it wasn't to long ago they had something like 20 for sale. Those poor mommas. If I could afford to buy every single dog, bitch and puppy they have I would and spay and neuter them all and find them wonderful lifelong homes. At least a few of us were able to save some of them from a life of a million litters. Dogs are not breeding machines, they are here to be our companions and all they want is to be loved.
