Has the black skin return to normal? The reason I'm asking is that I'm looking at the last picture and he looks great, but I noticed his face skin looks black, so I wasn't sure if that's how he was before the mange, which I'm guessing you might not have known, since you picked him up with manage.

His skin did return to normal. I could see that in areas where I knew for certain the skin had been pink. The face was the most dramatic as it was not only black but very leathery looking. The blackened areas on the rest of his body never looked like that.

Since you volunteer for the boxer rescue, I'm kind of interested in what you guys do to treat the boxers who have the mange?

We use the small daily oral doses of Ivermectin and Cephalexin when the skin is infected, which Sebastian's was. This is per our rescue vet. We do a whole lot beyond this, though. We have found that immune boosters make a HUGE difference in quicker recovery. Typically we use a product called Immugen. They also get Nupro (all of our foster dogs are on this) and usually fish oil. However with Sebastian I used a combination of Ultra Oil and coconut oil. We put them on a higher grade food, too. I had started Sebastian out on Wellness puppy formula but at about the same time I read online what you had regarding the mites feeding on the carbs and yeast, someone donated 3 bags of the Orijen puppy food to us, so I transitioned him over to that. I have no idea if that made any difference or not. With bathing we use a Neem oil shampoo, leaving it on for 5 - 10 minutes. I had made up a salve of coconut oil, neem oil and lavender oil which I would apply to his skin a couple of times a day. I had been reading about Nu-Stock and thought about getting some but I was having such good luck with the coconut oil combo that I didn't. I have heard a lot of success stories like yours with Nu-Stock, though. I heard it was pretty stinky!

Much of what we did with Sebastian's treatment is standard practice for us, but we did do a little more for this guy since he was worse than most cases we see.

Thanks for all the great info and I was reading that a lot of people prefer neem oil over nu-stuck, but the nu-stock just worked miracles on the area that I applied them. Of course there were areas around his eyes that were improving, so I'd have to give credit to the ivomec shots and the lower carb/yeast feeding, because no cream was placed there.

A quick question about Ivermectin and Cephalexin, how long were you doing both? The reason I am asking is that Cephalexin I was giving it to her for about 2 weeks as that's what I was given from my vet. It seems that it has caused some type of puppy vaginitis, so I'm hoping that now that she's off of it that it will clear up. She has yellow/green bright junk coming from her when she pees.

If you don't mind me asking, how much did the Ivermectin cost? I've seen others suggest it as well, but looking online it seems very expensive compared to ivomec shots. The ivomec shots I'm being charged 16 dollars in total and doing it once a week. So far I've done 4 shots, but he said I'd need to do about 10 shots all together.

Many human docs as well as some vets (and myself included) recommend that when you have anyone or anything on antibiotics that you also give probiotic. Thing is is that antibiotics do not distinguish between good and bad bacteria they simply kill ALL bacteria. It isn't uncommon for humans to get yeast infections while on antibiotics due to this. Personally my Boxer was on Cephalexin for 2 MONTHS and never had a problem but I also gave 2 acidophilus capsules daily. I also take the same thing when I am on antibiotics and have never personally had a problem. So I'd recommend if you ever put her on antibiotics again to also give a probiotic or acidophilus.

I would have to agree 1000% with this. On the human perspective, I am one of those people who get a bad dose of yeast infection when on antibiotics. I ALWAYS get a script for diflucan because of it.
You don't want her to get it on top of everything else. Walmart sells it really cheap too ;)

Maybe not being a woman, but............... where do I get probiotic or acidophilus? Is it prescription or just something I can get over the counter. Should I be giving it to her now that she's been off antibiotics for a week or two?

Personally I give it to both fo my dogs daily. Acidophilus is just the good bacteria found in yogurt, you get it in the vitamin aisle of any store. The "general" rule of thumb is to continue it for 1-2 months after antibiotics have been given. But like I said I give it to both of my dogs daily to help with gas, and it keeps my colitis dog's stools in good shape, so you can give it whenever.

Sebastian was on the Ivermectin for about 50 - 60 days or so. Most of the dogs in our rescue that we treated were on it anywhere from about 45 to 90 days, but most were right around 60 days. Some of the dogs were on Cephalexin for 2 weeks but most that I can recall were on it more like 30 days. As Meghan mentioned, it's always good to use some kind of probiotic when antibiotics are used to keep that good bacteria alive and well. The acidophilus tablets, kefir or yogurt will all do the job. We use Cephalexin a lot because it's cheap. It's one of the drugs you can get for $4 for a 30 supply at some pharmacies.

We buy Ivermectin at a feed store at a cost of approximately $35 for a 50 mL bottle. When we started treatment with Sebastian, we had just bought a new bottle and at the end of treatment, there was approximately half the bottle left, maybe a little less (I'm not real good at making estimations). If we had been a non-rescue client getting this through our vet's office, the cost would have been approximately $200 for about 60 days of treatment. Of course, we receive a big discount for our rescue dogs but it still would have been a whole lot more than us getting it from the feed store.

Ok I guess she will be on the shots for a total of 70 days, since we're doing it once a week for 10 weeks and tomorrow she will get the 5th shot tomorrow. She was on Cephalexin for 2 weeks with a free supply of it from publix. I wish my vet would have told me about acidophilus tablets....

Even though it's been weeks off of the antibiotics, should I go ahead and start her on acidophilus tablets?

Yes you can give her acidophilus whenever you want. My dogs get it daily and are not on antibiotics.

I've been noticing that Roxy has new bumps growing, is that normal? I mean I've been feeling as much as I can around her body where I can tell she has bumps and I've been putting the Nu-stock and her head has cleared up, hair is growing and most people can't tell she has red manage, except if you look really close her hair is short.
Well on the side of her body that I didn't put much nu-stock I'm now noticing bumps that I'm sure weren't there before.

I went today for the 5th shot and the vet said he noticed more bumps on the side as well. I asked him if this is something I should be concern about and I didn't really get a great answer about it. He mentioned that it's the mites that are surfacing now, so does that mean she's still improving or is it possible? Because it seems a lot of areas there's no signs and everything has cleared up and now these certain areas of her body are making me a little bit concern that new bumps are appearing.
