Yes you can give her acidophilus whenever you want. My dogs get it daily and are not on antibiotics.

She's off of antibiotics... will acidophilus clear her up by itself? She is peeing in the house all the time now, while before it seemed that she could hold it. She would even bark for me to come to the sliding glass door to let her out. Now it's as if she can't hold it and today I came home to probably half a gallon on pee.

Will acidophilus clear it up or should she be on different antibiotics? When I took her before to the vet for UTI he didn't say much, because she was on Cephalexin and he mentioned puppy vaganitis, but I think it's actually an infection. I have Amoxicillin and Ciprofloxacin here, so I'm wondering if I should give it to her? If it's an INFECTION acidophilus won't do anything for an infection. But you should never give antibiotics without a vet's okay as you have no idea what strain of bacteria you are giving it for. If she cannot control her urine and you're sure it isn't simply potty training troubles she needs to go to the vet and have a urine culture done and either be put on the correct antibiotics (as well as acidophilus IMO) or some other medication for the problem.

My mom was telling me that one of her dogs had a UTI and she tried everything, including acidophilus and multiple antibiotics and nothing seemed to clear it up, except for FORTIFLORA. So I googled FORTIFLORA and see it's by purina, which I'm not too happy with their dog good.

Maybe she just had a bad day, because she's back to using outside every single day, but I gave her acidophilus with her other pills. The smell is horrible, which I know I've read is a sign of a UTI.

The smell can also be a sign of too high concentration which can just be from not drinking enough water. If you really think there's a problem get her urine cultured at the vet and sent to the lab. Or see what happens.

They ended up giving me amoxicillin, which I already had and was going to give it to her, but oh well. I'm giving her the acidophilus twice a day as well, but how do I know if I'm giving her too much or not enough?

right now she's getting vitamin C twice a day, vitamin E twice a day, acidophilus twice a day, antibiotics twice a day and fish oil once a day.

Vitamin E should only be ONCE a day, it's a fat soluable vitamin so no more than 400 IU daily should be given.

I give one acidophilus pill twice a day and it's 10mg per pill with over 100 million active bacteria and I've never had a problem. If you're giving antibiotics there are some studies that recommend giving the acidophilus either 3 hours before or 3 hours after giving the antibiotic instead of at the same time, but that's totally up to you.

Also if you ever need human medications (ie amoxicillian) for your dog, ask for a written script and take it to Wal-Mart, Target, etc as it's on the $4 RX plan and you can get the whole treatment's worth for 4 bucks.

Lucky I don't even have to hide any of these with any food. She eats the fish oil out of my hand, vitamin C chewables, vitamin C, the acidophilus as well. The only pill she will spit out is the antibiotics, which is blue and maybe has a smell she doesn't like.

No, for a Boxer (even a human being weighing over 100 pounds) should not take more than 400 IU daily. Fish oil depends on weight, 1,000mg per 20 pounds of body weight.

Just an FYI Vitamin C too much gives diarrhea (500mg is a lot and I know gives my 55 pound son HORRIBLE diarrhea I have to cut the 500mg tablet in half for him or he's in the bathroom 3-4 times that day with the runs), antibiotics also give diarrhea. So if she has the runs you may want to half the vitamin C and see if that helps correct the problem (once she's off of the antibiotcs as you probably won't be able to tell given the antibiotic). Not sure how much she weighs to comment on the fish oil. Check the vitamin C chewables, most have artificial sweetners which are toxic to dogs. Your best best is Ester C as it helps protect the stomach as Vitamin C (too much too often) can irritate the stomach and it doesn't have artificial sweetners or sugar in it.

Yes, it's bad. Artificial sweetners are toxic to dogs. No I would not finish the bottle. Please make sure to read labels, VERY important. Xylitol can very easily and quickly kill dogs (and has) which is another popular artificial sweetner in things like gum, mints, children's vitamins, and other very common things. Gotta read labels.

Like I said antibiotics are known for giving people and animals diarrhea it's a very well known side effect, vitamin C it is also a known side effect (sometimes it can take awhile but a month is awhile), mixing the two who knows. Yes it can boost the immune system. It could be the food, antibiotics, Vitamin C, or a combo of the three.
