Demodex Mite found really worried

I took Roxy to get her shots today and my vet said she looks great, but was recommending that I give her more fish oil, so I kind of wanted a second opinion.

She weighs about 21 pounds and I've been giving her one pill that's 1,000mg. I found that it's recommended to give 1,000 per 20 pounds, so I wasn't going to give her 2 pills until she was full grown, but he told me I should give her fish oil in the morning and at night. Maybe he didn't realize how much fish oil I'm actually giving her, since I'm getting human pill forum

The dose is 1,000mg per 10-20 pounds depending on the reason for giving it. the 20 pound dose is usually if the dog is healthy but you're just supplementing, the 10 pound dose is if there's something wrong. My 60 pound female takes 6-7 1,000 mg capsules daily (human) as I am giving it to help reduce inflammation due to arthrits, my boy who is 63 pounds takes 4 per day as he takes them for allergies. So I don't see any harm in giving her 2 pills a day at all, especially given her mange issues.

I'm not sure, but I'm finding it hard to find information about the black skin. My vet wasn't the greatest help and it seems like online I'm getting more information, but I have spent hours trying to figure out if her skin turning black is a good thing or bad thing?

Almost all her bumps have disappeared, her hair seems to be growing back slowly on her head, but the rest of her body the hair seems thinner and her skin is turning black in a lot of spots. Is this abnormal?

The only thing I can find on black mange or skin turning black says that the red mange can turn black in which the skin becomes hyperpigmented. I'm not sure exactly what the means to be honest or if that's a sign of improvement or irritation, healing, kind of like a scab or any information at all.

I found this one picture of a bulldog that is an extreme case, but the black around his/her body seems to be very similar to what my puppy has and I haven't gotten much information from my vet, but then again there's no information online about it.

It's been about a month since I found out she had red mange and I'm really happy with what seems to be her recovery.

I thought I'd post an updated picture on how she's doing. She's getting her 4th shot tomorrow

WOW, she is looking much better. As for the dark skin, I would imagine it will also improve. Tyson had just a small area on his cheek that had mange, but it all cleared up with diet. To look at him now, you'd never know he had it.
Keep up the great diet and supplements. They really do help. I personally have been giving sardines a couple times a week along with eggs until I can get some vitamin E to supplement the fish oil.

I decided not to get vitamin E, because of the Tocopherol that's already in the fish oil. Everything i"m reading is saying that Tocopherol is natural and better than giving vitamin E by itself. One of the dog bags I have either Wellness or Orijen has as one of their ingridents:
"Tocopherol (a natural source of Vitamin E)" written just like that. So my puppy is getting Tocopherol already in a pill forum, plus the dog food.
Even thought I don't think the food has much Tocopherol, if she's getting it from the liquid pill and also the food, then I start to have a concern about giving her too much vitamin E.

Personally I've been told by more than 1 holistic vet as well as more than 1 western medicine vet to add the vitamin E in a capsule form.

I was told the same thing by my personal doctor who is both holitic and traditional medicine to add it for myself since I also take fish oil.

Obviously you can do what you want, but I've been giving both of my dogs fish oil and a vitamin E capsule daily for over 2 years and both are doing just fine. And my one girl gets a full blood panel every 3 months due to her illness and everything comes back fine (except for what we know are issues that have nothing to do with Vitamin E).

In May we brought in a Boxer pup that had the worst case that I had ever personally dealt with. Sebastian was about 4 months old on the day I picked him up from the shelter and was such a nasty bloody, scabby mess that by the time I got him home, I was asked if I had broken up a dog fight because my clothing was covered in his blood. When I had taken him to the vet they did a fecal and told me that even his poop was loaded with the mites! On Sebastian's webpage, I have photos of him from day one through day 45, with a few photos taken after that. If you are interested in seeing the stages he went through and the progress he made, please look here and scroll down below all the text.

As you'll see at about day 12, his skin had blackened, mostly on his face. You'll also notice that the progression of hair loss began on his face and worked its way down his body. We were even seeing some regrowth on his face and head before he lost the hair on his torso.

Anyway, I hope the photos of Sebastian's progression during treatment are interesting and/or helpful to those treating a dog for demodex and questioning what might be normal or not. It is true that when you begin treatment, things seem to look worse before they look better.

Wow, I thought my puppy had it bad, but those pictures are horrible on the first day or two.

Has the black skin return to normal? The reason I'm asking is that I'm looking at the last picture and he looks great, but I noticed his face skin looks black, so I wasn't sure if that's how he was before the mange, which I'm guessing you might not have known, since you picked him up with manage.

The skin on Roxy's face seemed to have turn black and now it's slowly going back. The breeder told me that her vet said that it's normal for it to turn black right before the hair regrows.

Since you volunteer for the boxer rescue, I'm kind of interested in what you guys do to treat the boxers who have the mange?

It's hard to tell how well the ivomec shots have been helping, but the nu-stock is absolutely amazing. I feel her body/face for any slight bump I can feel and then I put nu-stock on it now and by the next day that bump is nearly gone. I put the most on her neck with using baby oil to thin it and then I'm using a tiny tiny paint brush. The smell is horrible and the family is complaining about the smell, but I put it on her at night mostly, so she just lays with it in her crate in the livingroom while we're in the bedroom sleeping, so the smell goes away for the most part by the time we wake up. I feel bad that Roxy has to smell that all night, but I'm just really amazed with how well the stuff works.

What I'm starting to do different, which I wish I would have done more is giving her a bath with Sulf Oxydex Shampoo at least once a week and letting it sit in for 10 or more minutes before washing it off. I believe there's similar ingredients in the Sulf Oxydex Shampoo and nu-stock, which I saw an article that says sulfur kills mites in 5 minutes, well with shampoo you can soak in the skin/hair and get areas that you can't with nu-stock.

So even though almost all her hair on her head is returning, I'm starting to use the Sulf Oxydex Shampoo shampoo once a week on sundays and then on Wednesdays I'm using aveeno shampoo. After each bath and after she's dryed at night I put the nu-stock on where there's any slight bump or places that seem to have been hit harder like her head. Then each day when I'm petting her and I feel even a slight bump I get a tab of nu-stock and put it directly on that single bump.

I really have to say this message board has been so great and the people here are beyond helpful.
