I have had cropped Boxer ears in the hot California sun for 10 years. I have never heard of such a thing. I am assuming that either your friend left her poor Dobe in the sun for several days unattended, or she used the weirdest tape imaginable. Sun melting tape?

Enough said!!
Boxers are a man-made breed. Nature did not create the drop ear; man did.

Enough Said!!

What does it take to change breed standards so that show boxers could have either type of ears and are judged on their own merit, either cropped or natural?
Boxers are judged on their own merits. Cropping is simply part of the current American breed standard. The American Boxer Club is the keeper of the standard. They are 100% comprised of breeders and exhibitors of our beloved breed. It is these several hundred people that petition, deliberate and vote on any ammendments to the breed standard.

She was not in the sun more than an afternoon, and she was and is never unattended, she's very well cared for. I don't know exactly what happen, but the glue of the tape melt and it did a big infection.

Samson has beautiful cropped ears. I feel, and mom is biased (!), that he looks "regal" with his ears cropped. I think it really adds to his looks; however, I can admit that his ears were a tremendous amount of work. We taped and posted, and then he got tired of it after a number of months. This meant that no posting or taping would be allowed, by him, to stay put for more than one minute. At that point, we had to start using our hands whenever we were near him to "train" the ears to stay in position. This seemed like a loving act to him, and he had no idea we were "training" his ears.

I can say this, at one point, shortly after we had Samson's ears cropped, I felt guilty because we were bothering him so often with giving the needed attention to his ears (taping and posting). I do not think the ears caused him a lot of pain. They did look bad the first week, but with antibiotic ointment, they quickly cleared and healed. I would definitely look into the laser surgery if I ever decided to have another boxer's ears cropped. I have been told, by my vet who cropped Samson's ears, that the laser cropping is much less painful and heals much faster.

Delilah has natural ears. They are floppy ones. I think her ears add to her cuteness. So, there you are! I am in the middle on this!

If you want to have your boxer's ears cropped, you must do it when they are very young. I may be saying this wrong, but I think their ear cartilage gets tougher, and the ears will not stand up if the puppy is a little older and the cartilage has already toughened and/or broken down. I would do a lot of researsh on this, as you are, before you make the decision.

Good Luck!!!!!

I also have to applaud the nice manner in which this post has been addressed as i have read previous ones that ended up in horrible slamming!! Needless to say, my baby has natural ears and i LOVE them! I also love to rub on them and kiss them....they are my favorite part of her....and so so soft!! Her daddy wanted them clipped and we did inquire at the vet(who does not do it personally)...but were strongly discouraged and told very very few places would even do it....and lots of them were not 'qualified'!! I honestly cannot imagine her without them.....i really think it helps her get out of trouble with the sad face and the ears dangling:)

I guess I didn't make clear what I was trying to convey. I understand dogs are judged on how close they conform to the breed standard. Why can't the standard be changed to allow either form of ear. It was changed in Europe to only unaltered, why can't we change here to allow both?

Every breed is judged in Conformation against their Breed Standard. The current Boxer Breed Standard calls for ears to be cropped and held erect over the head. Now, there is no perfect dog. Every dog has its faults. And uncropped ears just that: a fault.

There is nothing stopping someone from exhibiting an uncropped Boxer in America. Just be aware that you are presenting a dog to be judged with a fault no judge on the planet can overlook. It is easy to not understand a correct head or a correct bite. But cropped/uncropped ears are obvious. Some judges will consider an uncropped ear. But just as some breeders do not wish the standard changed, so too do some judges refuse to award the win to an uncropped Boxer.

Some judges have excused uncropped dogs or simply placed them last in their class. And some judges have given them the win.

For a pet Boxer, this is a personal decision to which you are not going to suffer any daily contests against your choice. In the Conformation ring, life is a bit different :)

I would think that a dog would have to be virtually "flawless" in all other aspects for a judge to consider the uncropped boxer. (I'm talking about a judge that would not normally consider an uncropped boxer). I know it depends on the judge but I'm wondering how a judge can award a dog with uncropped ears if the fault is so obvious. Would it be in the same class as being cow hocked, another sometimes obvious fault? Just curious!;)

When we found our breeder (thankfully a 45 minute drive from us) she asked us if we wanted Oskar's ears cropped. She was taking her other pups in. We love the look of the cropped ears so we told her to go ahead. When we picked him up I was so sad. His poor ears were stiched up and bleedy.

They didn't hurt him though. We were committed to taking him once a week to the breeder for follow up. He is 8 months now and we still go to the breeder about every week and a half or two. It is a long process and you have to be committed. His ears are looking great and we should be just about done. I don't think we will have our next boxer cropped.

I have noticed that Oskar and Joe are the only ones in the card exchange so far with cropped ears! Interesting....
