History of ear cropping

I live in Australia and it is illegal to cropp ears here, my newly acquired pup therefore has floppy ears as did my previous boxer. I believe cropped ears show off the beautiful boxer head our dogs have even more, whereas floppy ears gives a more puppy cute look.

I don't know if I'm quoting garbage, but I'd wager to say that 50 years ago, the vast majority of boxers were cropped. (does anyone know this to be true?) Does anyone know whether it's not done in Europe? I know I've seen pictures from the 1800s - a boxer club, and they were all cropped (and alot closer to the head too! (and mostly white)). [/B]

I thought you might find this interesting Stephanie and all other boxer lovers!!!

" .....what are the grounds for this centuries-old custom? In battles against other dogs, in the harrying of bulls, and in the hunt, the ancestors of our boxers were exposed to the desperate attempts at defense and the angry attacks of their opponents. The unprotected hanging ears of the dog were especially endangered. Painful and difficult-to-heal wounds of depending ear flaps, which the dog could not lick like wounds on other places on its body, moved the men of those bygone times to carefully shorten the ears of puppies.* They took as their example the wolf and other large wild animals, which all were provided by nature with upstanding ears. The practise of ear cropping has been maintained to the present day as protection for the sometimes pugnacious boxer. Moreover, since the short, sharp ears are well-suited to its bearing, stature, and demeanor, this form is retained in most of the United States, and many other countries. However, cropping, which may only be done legally by a veterinarian and under full anesthesia, should be understood not as a fashion but as a measure for the dog's well being. Aside from the danger of wounds, dogs with hanging ears frequently suffer from wearison, painful ear infections."

I voted natural, because that is how Jaeger's ears are and that is how they are gonna stay. I actually like both, but i don't know if I could stand to put my dog through the surgery. Also with 2 monsterous little boys, I don't think I could keep them away from the bandages and such.

Tayo has natural ears. Personlly I think it looks cuter!! Our vet WILL NOT crop dogs ears, he doesn't believe in it. I know in my area I rarely see a boxer with its ears cropped.

This is such a touchy subject! Previously, my post was removed by the moderator. In no way did I mean to offend any one! My baby has floppy ears. I also think it is unnecessary to crop their ears. I wouldnt want to put my baby through the surgery! Her tail is docked though.

That's interesting about it being illegal to dock tails in Germany.... I still maintain, a long tail on a Boxer would be *deadly* ..... do you suppose the long tail would stop the kidney beaning??

And, I only posted the question to find out what people had.... nothing more!!! I didn't want my first poll to be controversial!!
