Adding to my previous post, I guess the article does state that the Sheriff's investigation suggests that he was not being attacked. It does appear as though the guy made a mistake. My question would be is the guy really just a dog hater or was really fearful for his life? Does he just not know how to read a dogs body language to know if he is charging aggressively or if he is just wanting to play? I would need to know those answers before grabbing my pitchfork.

Quote from the article: "Last month, Sheehan, 36, of Hauppauge, was charged with animal cruelty and discharging a firearm over a public highway. Suffolk police have opened an investigation and said they are monitoring the legal proceedings.

"He of course says he was being attacked," Cleveland said yesterday. "That isn't supported by the evidence we derived during the investigation.""

The cop is a whacko.

Yes I agree this guy sounds like a huge whacko!

"My husband is a cop and the reason they carry their guns off duty is because if they live in/ near the community they work in they often run into people (drug dealers, gang members, etc) that they have arrested in the past. Running into these prior “clients” when they have no back up is a serious risk to the officers."

Sorry, I don't buy it. I am a probation and parole office and conditional sentence supervisor. I meet with my clients unarmed and run into them continually in the community in which I both live and work. I have sent some of these people to jail, caused others to have their release denied, etc and they are no more fond of PPO's than they are of police officers.

You don’t “buy” what? I don’t know anything about Ontario or probation and parole officers but this is a legit reason to carry a weapon off duty. In this area the cops do more than eat donuts. I have heard/ read the stats that most cops go their entire career without drawing their weapons (much less fire one) but that’s not the case where we are at. It’s not uncommon for DH’s city to have multiple homicides in one night. Not to mention DH regularly runs into people who are on parole for murder (why are they out???). I’m not a huge fan of guns and DH rarely carried his until he had several years on the force and continued to see his “clients” in various places. I’m not defending this freaky cop for shooting the dog but there is nothing wrong with a little officer safety (even when they are off duty). And lets not forget the stories like the Salt Lake City, Utah Mall shooting in February where an armed off duty police officer single handedly stopped a shooter on a rampage who had already shot 5 people. Anyway, I wasn’t trying to start a debate, I was just responding to the multiple posts asking why this guy would be carrying his gun and all I was trying to point out is that there are plenty of legit reasons for officers to carry their weapons off duty.

Rest in peace, dear Zeus. Maybe you were scared, maybe you just wanted to play, maybe you just wanted to say hi, maybe......... I'm very sorry your dad couldn't catch you before it was too late, you didn't didn't deserve to die so young.

That poor baby! :( (and his poor owners! :( )

I was stating that the story was a sad one for the Boxer & his owners & pondering on why this cop was jogging with a loaded gun.

"Regardless of the situation my question is still why does he jog with a loaded gun?? What if God forbid he tripped while jogging and the gun went off and killed a child? Godspeed Zeus.. what a heartbreaking story"

I reference to the above, I am a cop and I do carry my gun with me most of the time. As also stated in previous comments, wether Im in the area that I work or out of state where no one knows me, I am still a cop, 24/7, on duty and off duty. Is a plumber any use without his tools...no, well niether is a cop. If some crime took place in front of me while off duty, I want to be able to take the appropriate action and be able to defend myself at the same time. The perfect example is the mall shooting that took place in the midwest of the U.S. a few months back...thank god for that off duty who was able to shoot the criminal and saved so many lives. As for the officer shooting the dog, did he legitemately believe he was in danger of being serious hurt, who knows. I found in the many years of doing my job that the news tends to focus only on the officer that does something wrong, or even if it is right, they attempt to make him look wrong. Everybody yells criminal at this officer, and if he is wrong, then he should be punished. But before yelling "bad man", learn the whole story.

As for the probabtion/parole officer, buy a gun...it's gonna save your life one day when one of those convicts confront you on the street...They hate us all

Not going to happen. Not only is it illegal in Canada but, I believe, unnecessary. I don't have a gun at work and would never have one off duty. My safety is important but I don't believe guns are the answer. Just my thought and a little off topic so, having responded to this and EAO76's question, I'll let it end here.

This is happening more often, I recently heard of another off duty cop shooting a dog.

Why are they running around with guns, if they're off duty?

OMG I went back and re-read the article...then realized the cop I mentioned in my first post...Is this same exact man!
It wasn't a different guy...it was the same guy, shooting another dog a month ago. This is shocking.

Well this particular incident happened on May 27th and it was just in the local papers, so maybe there was only one incident, but it was written up in Newsday only now.
