Wilson has been on my mind so often these last couple of weeks. Next Monday marks the first anniversary of his death.
I can't let myself think about him too often. I still feel the bitterness of his death, how he was taken from us so early. And I remember so acutely what he felt like. Maybe it's because we touched and petted him so much; the memory of what he felt like--his fur, his big fleshy lips, even his paws stepping on my foot--the memory of it is so real I swear I can feel it. And yet he's not really there...I'm sorry, it's hard to describe, but the experience is both comforting and really painful at the same time.
I don't see how I will be able to open my heart to another dog after Lara goes. Losing them is so horrible. When I think about Wilson I feel like my heart turns to ashes.

I know it is so hard to move on... I know you miss him so much. Killian will be gone one year Jan 6th, and I still feel like it were yesterday. I just try to think of all the good things that he brought to our lives, and try to smile when I see his pictures. I am sending you a big ((hug)) and please know that I understand how you feel.

I am so sorry for your loss. The first year is just awful and to loose them young is a double blow. It just breaks your heart. I hope time heals you. In time your pain will slowly be replaced by sweet memories of your Wilson. It will always be bittersweet, but try to think of the joy you brought each other, and what a happy boy he was. He is watching over you from the bridge and is in very good company with all the boxer angels gone before and since. I wish a healed heart for you so you can open it again to another lucky boxer who will have such a loving Mom and will bring a smile to your sad heart. God Bless

Yesterday my husband and I had a good laugh remembering the big smacking sound Wilson's fleshy lips used to make when you threw him a treat, so I guess that's progress. He had the greatest lips, just for kissing.

The day came and went. My husband and I only spoke briefly of it. Wilson died in his arms; it is still a tender subject for him too.
Lumpy, whiskery, loving Lara is a source of consolation. Thank God for her, because I feel sure I could never have opened my heart to another dog again after Wilson died. I can't see how I will after Lara goes. I know people do, but right now I can't see how.
He was such a joy. I am really trying to hang on to that thought right now. He deserves to be remembered fondly, so I will continue to try to remember him in brief moments, without tears.

I know how you feel. I lost my Abby almost 7 yrs ago and it still feels like it was just yesterday. I miss her so much. I think about her alot. Mostly smiles but sometimes alot of tears. I can tell you it will get better but the little hole in your heart will never heal....Hugs Linda

Thanks Linda. I guess it's all part of the parcel when we accept a dog into our lives. Logically, I knew he wouldn't live forever; I guess I was just so unprepared when it happened, particularly because he went so suddenly and so young.
I realized today that I haven't made Christmas cookies because of Wilson. I know that might seem odd; it's just that I have this really vivid memory of Wilson 2 Christmases ago, standing up at the table, paws splayed, guiltily and greedily horfing down about a half a platter of the most beautiful Christmas cookies I had displayed. Lord it is the funniest image, and somehow I am crying as I type this and laughing a little at the same time. Oh he could be troublesome! Christmas cookies will never be the same for me. I think I'll always feel a little melancholy when I see them.
