Canidae change

Just wanted to say that Buster is not doing as well on the new formula either. Like many of you have stated with your dogs, his stools used to be small and firm on the original formula, now they are looser and have a yellowish color to them.
I emailed Canidae to complain and received the same standardized email. Hopefully with enough negative feedback and drop in sales, they will bring back the original.
In the meantime, I am not comfortable with the additional grains added, so I will look for another brand of dogfood.
Bums me out big time. Buster did really well on Canidae ALS.

am i doing a mistake by sticking with Canidae?
i found the 40lbs bag for $42 (which is a big deal for feeding 2 dogs... the price counts)

is the new formula that bad?

i had such a hard time finding a food that they both do well on.

I feed them Canidae lamb dry + Instinct lamb wet + prozyme + fish oil + pumpkin (to take care of the looser stool)

I wonder how it would go if I switched from a lower-quality food to the new Canidae?? I've been thinking about making the switch for a while, but have been reading about the negative effects the new formula(s) has on some dogs.

There isn't a food yet invented that suits every dog ;) True, the old Canidae probably suited more dogs than average - but just because the new formula doesn't seem to suit some of them, doesn't mean that every dog will do badly on it (and there is only one way to find out how it may suit your individual pets). On paper, at least, some of the changes are actually improvements.

That said, there are plenty of alternative foods around that are of similar formulation (either to the old or new formula), so its quite possible to choose one of those if you prefer.

I just got a new puppy & the manager at the feed store recommended Fromm, which is a pet food product owned and operated by a family in Wisconsin, Connecticut; not some huge manufacturing plant. It has the same high quality ingredients that I once had in Canidae at a reasonable price.

Go to www.frommfamily.com. & scroll all the way down to "Products" listed on the left hand side.

Fromm Four Star lists one meat product, but Fromm Gold has a combination of all meat products, which are interchangeable after you have your pet on one meat product for 30 days. For example, chicken a'la vegetable for 30 days and Salmon for the next 30 days, etc., etc. These are the ingredients found in Fromm Gold Adult:

Duck, Chicken Meal, Chicken, Brown Rice, Pearled Barley, Oatmeal, Menhaden Fish Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), Lamb, Potato, Tomato Pomace, Whole Egg, Salmon Oil (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Cheese, Flaxseed, Brewers Dried Yeast, Alfalfa Meal, Carrots, Lettuce, Celery, Lecithin, Chicken Cartilage, Monocalcium Phosphate, Salt, Potassium Chloride, DL-Methionine, Chicory Root Extract, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Bifidobacterium Longum, Lactobacillus Plantarum, Enterococcous Faecium, Vitamin A, D3, E, B12 Supplements, Choline Chloride, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Riboflavin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Biotin, Zinc Sulfate, Iron Carbonate, Manganous Oxide, Copper Oxide, Cobalt Carbonate, Calcium Iodate, Sorbic Acid, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Sodium Selenite.

And Fromm has pearled barley and tomato pomace as well. Not really much difference between this and Canidae so I think you guys are going a little overboard.

I think a big point is that Canidae started using grain fragments (like rice bran) also they started using a Diamond manufacturing plant which many are uncomfortable with, and they changed to "ocean fish meal" which means it can be any fish that they choose without having to change their ingredients instead of a named fish meal. I haven't seen anyone "going overboard" just a nice civil discussion that many are upset with the new change and that Canidae hasn't seemed to listen to it's customers and they downgraded a formula to make it "better" when it didn't make it better and why mess with a good thing in the first place. Also, for those of us who have gluten intolerant dogs, their formula is no longer gluten free which caused serious issues for many as the fact that they had new ingredients was not widely advertised as well. For me, regardless of their food, their overall company image took a HUGE hit due to some of their responses to e-mails, not publicizing the formula change on the bag (I was feeding the Lamb Meal and Rice before the ALS was changed and this all became a big deal), and how they went about a lot of customer service issues. JMO.

The only thing I heard from my supplier was that Canidae changed the sizes of the bags... they wouldnt be selling 40 lb bags anymore.. they would be 42 lb bags now. Not much of a difference there.. kinda strange really.

That IS odd. Our supplier went from a 40lb bag to a 38lb bag for the same price.

I noticed a "change" in both my boxers poo and just thought I would google new formula canidae and MANY posts have been made and I would say at least 90% were negative. Post in a yorkie site, a rotweiler site, here in our boxer world and just everywhere the new formula is being talked about.

I called Incredipet tonight and asked the workers on staff if they have been getting any feedback. BOTH workers said yes that people dont like it and it has made a few dogs sick.
I guess I need to change.

Anyone know anything about Wellness??

Our experience with the formula change

Just to add our experience with the Canidae formula change- our dogs had been on canidae for about two years, and we were very happy with it. Stores in our area were running out of the ALS and they told me it was because of a packaging change. They assured me there wasn't a formula change. When I got the new bag, I knew immediately when I saw the kibble that it was different. Our (3) dogs stool became looser, but I expected that, with a changed food, and expected it to improve within a couple weeks (also reassured of this by our vet). I was getting really frustrated though, because everywhere I went (multiple pet food stores, the vet), no one knew about the formula change, and didn't always believe me when I insisted it was different- I felt like we were all alone.

After sticking with the new formula for almost six weeks, our dogs stool progressively became looser and looser to the point where they couldn't hold it in the house for 4 hours between me leaving for work and my husband coming home.

That night, I found a listing of complaints on consumeraffairs.com. Prior to the formula change there were less than half a dozen complaints ever, of people who figured they had just gotten a bad bag. After the formula change, within about a months time there were 14 pages of people whose dogs got diarrhea, vomiting, hives, lethargy, and refusing to eat. It made me so angry that a company would make such substantial changes without telling anyone, and then blame the consumer for not transitioning from the old food into the new, when they didn't even know they were getting new food.

I don't know why we stuck with it that long, but after two days of a messy house, it was clear we needed to change. They have been on homecooked for almost 2 weeks now, and we are getting a new food today.
