Ugh, I don't know where to go from here. I order the canidae from petfooddirect and when I went to order tonight, I noticed the weight difference. With the added weight of the 44 pound bags, comes a higher shipping charge. Ordering the smaller bags wouldn't work either. With decreased quality, I don't know what to do. I would like to find a similar priced food but don't want to sacrifice quality and at this point, seems impossible.
I know someone who sells wellness foods so I am gonna check that option out tomorrow. Any other ideas?

To buy locally would be best to save on shipping but that may not be possible. To drive to get canidae, it would be 80 miles round trip. No matter what way I go, I am either gonna have to pay shipping or drive at least 60 miles round trip.

I just got a new puppy & the manager at the feed store recommended Fromm, which is a pet food product owned and operated by a family in Wisconsin, Connecticut; not some huge manufacturing plant. It has the same high quality ingredients that I once had in Canidae at a reasonable price.

Go to www.frommfamily.com. & scroll all the way down to "Products" listed on the left hand side.

Fromm Four Star lists one meat product, but Fromm Gold has a combination of all meat products, which are interchangeable after you have your pet on one meat product for 30 days. For example, chicken a'la vegetable for 30 days and Salmon for the next 30 days, etc., etc. These are the ingredients found in Fromm Gold Adult:

Duck, Chicken Meal, Chicken, Brown Rice, Pearled Barley, Oatmeal, Menhaden Fish Meal, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid), Lamb, Potato, Tomato Pomace, Whole Egg, Salmon Oil (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols), Cheese, Flaxseed, Brewers Dried Yeast, Alfalfa Meal, Carrots, Lettuce, Celery, Lecithin, Chicken Cartilage, Monocalcium Phosphate, Salt, Potassium Chloride, DL-Methionine, Chicory Root Extract, Yucca Schidigera Extract, Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Bifidobacterium Longum, Lactobacillus Plantarum, Enterococcous Faecium, Vitamin A, D3, E, B12 Supplements, Choline Chloride, Niacin, Pantothenic Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Riboflavin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Biotin, Zinc Sulfate, Iron Carbonate, Manganous Oxide, Copper Oxide, Cobalt Carbonate, Calcium Iodate, Sorbic Acid, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Proteinate, Copper Proteinate, Manganese Proteinate, Sodium Selenite.

canidae

I don`t know if I`m in the right forum or not, but sorry if not. The store where I buy my Canidae still has the old formula, thank goodness. I was just wondering if I were to buy maybe 6 large bags of it, put it in my basement, would anyone know how long it would stay good? Like no bugs in it or anything? I just don`t want to have to switch Tyson until I absolutly have to. The chicken and rice is the only thing he is able to eat without having loose poop. I was so happy to see that they still had some and they were getting more food in on tuesday, but I haven`t made it there to see if it is the new or old.
Thanks for the suggestions

This was the same with my boy, I found Natural Balance Lamb Meal and Brown Rice works GREAT for him and is similar (no not identical) to Canidae and is gluten free. May be an option for you.

I know the bags have expiration dates. How long would that many bags last you? Dog food does go bad (forgetting about bugs it actually spoils) after a certain point.

I tried Innova with Barron but it was too rich for his system so I put him on Canidae. Innova is an excellent food! I'm thinking about feeding Innova or Fromm to my new rescue (when I get him). What is everyone else switching to?

I tried Innova Evo and found it was way too rich for my dogs. They were throwing up and had diarrhea. I tried, then switched them to Wellness Core and have had no problems. They are also pooping much less frequently and the size is 1/2 of what it was on Canidae.

he is eating about 3-4 cups a day. Being only 7 months, I know his appetite will only get bigger :). I will probably just keep an eye on the bags at the store and when they change, I`ll make sure I have enough to switch him over to something else. I`m a little apprehensive with anything other than chicken and rice. I tried him on some lamb and rice, and his poop was sooo runny. Almost like water.

Every dog is different. Oscar can't eat any food with canola oil, so I never tried Wellness Core for him, but Mali went through the equivalent of two large bags, had larger than usual poops, and suddenly started refusing to eat it. I switched her to Taste of the Wild cold turkey, and a week or so later when I tried to use up the rest of the Core by mixing a little with the TOTW, she would throw up. Both my dogs eat EVO and EVO RM with no problems. Some dogs do great on EVO, some do great on Core, some probably do great on both, some do great on neither brand.

Price increase and bag weight decrease

I just bought a new bag and the price went up by about $7 and the weight of the bag went down by 5lbs (35 instead of 40). I was not aware of the formula change so it looks as if I am now on the search for a new food (again). I have to drive about an hour away to find quality dog food and to be honest I am getting a little fed up with the companies constantly changing formulas.

I just got an e-mail from Canidae this morning that they ARE bringing in a couple of grain free formulas into the mix. One that is turkey and chicken and lamb (similar to their original ALS but grain free) and another that is salmon and grain free. So for those interested in that be on the look out. Not sure when it's going to hit stores though it did not say. Here is the web link for ingredient purposes.

Available in 30-60days, price will be slightly less than other grain free formula's currently on the market. My bet: $53 for the 30lb bag.
