In anticipation for gardening this year (new home and happy planting) I was wondering what some of your favorite flowers and plants are. I love the Hydrenga bushes and flowers. My next favorite is the pink colored Hibicus!! I would like to try the Peony. My all time favorite flower are Glads!!!

Great topic! I have a lot of favorites. I love Roses, I have 4 rose bushes, they are hybrid-tea. Although they are difficult to take care of, very rewarding. Where I live our summers get humid and you have to battle black spot, other than than, it is nice to bring in cut roses. I also love Dahlias. Last year, was the first year I planted them, they come up late summer and early autumn. They are gorgeous and make wonderful cut flowers too. My other favorites in the garden are impatience (just water and forget about), they grow fast, pansies, another pretty flower, petunias and geraniums. I recently discovered a small petite flower called verbena, they attract butterflies. My faves in the spring are tulips, daffadils and hyacynth (smell great). That is it, I got a little carried away. It is so nice to think about spring and planting on a bitterly cold day like today.
Have fun in the spring with planting. It is very relaxing.

After studying horticulture for 6 years and being a florist for 19 years, I have way too many favorites.
I just thought I'd throw a few things out there to think about first before you have it all landscaped in your mind.
Soil acidity, can make or break the color of hydrangeas
Full sun, shade
Wind tolerant plants
type of soil
watering- some like lots, others little- do not plant opposites together.
Some plants are high maintenance and need lots of prunning and pinching for best results
Personnally I love to go out and fuss in my garden everyday,
It's allot of work, but worth it to me.
Last year my garden(all container garden) was only half of what I normally do because my showpuppies demanded allot of my time.
We'll see what this season brings. Maybe, just maybe, they won't destroy the plants this year.

Completely Boxer Crazy
Okay you green thumbs!! I love flowers - I just can't get them to grow and I have a question that maybe you guys can answer for me!! I have two flower beds. Each are about 4'x16' and are filled with some bulbs that only come up in Spring (tulips and such). What can I do to get those beds looking nice all summer and autumn? I was told that you can't plant bulbs too closely with other kinds (annuals - petunias and such). The beds look great for about 2 months and then nothing!!! Last summer I pulled all the bulbs and put in other plants, but I need to get the bulbs back in the ground, but hate that there are only 2 months of nice looking flowers!!
ahhhhhh!!! yes it is very theraputic and relaxing to garden. That is the first thing I think of when I get a cup of coffee is what am I going to do in the garden today. I planted dahlias last year, I bought the bulbs from Wal-mart and they were yellow and red. I also 2 years ago planted Asiatic Lilly's and that is what Kiki was smelling in one of the photos in my gallery- -it may be gone now, I will look into that. I paid something like 8 or 9 dollars for 1 plant, I think they forced it. You only get a few flowers each year and that is it. It was my hubby's fave. I can't find them now. I love impatience especially in big groups- -same pic with Kiki too. I found this stuff from Peters (Ithink) and it is especially for blooming flowers and plants, and I mean they were such a vibrant pink and red...I'll get you the correct name since you like impatience. Hyacinth is wonderful, I have these candles that are just amazing in that scent and during the holidays everyone loved the scent....they always remind me of Easter. Lets see, I love all kinds of tulips but wish they would stay longer. Gladiola's are just beautiful cut flowers in a tall vase in the kitchen or on the table good for dinner parties!! We have a patio set with the umbrella and entertain out there quite a lot during the spring and summer....I will have to try the Dahlias for my table this year. I think I also got some at walmart that were already in bloom in like little pots. I didn't get here in time this year to plant tulips, so I will do that next year, don't you do it in early fall? I can't wait.

I just bought my house last summer and my desert landscape is well... boring. I can't really have grass because the pool and daily waterings would send me to the poor house in the summer! I grew up in a house that had a HUGE rose bush in the front yard, and no matter what that thing would not die!!!! I have been thinking of planting a few Rose bushes in the back yard, that brings up 2 questions:
1. Will Cassius eat them? Or will he get pricked once or twice and leave them alone??
2. What is a hearty type of rose for the not-so-green-thimbed????

Aly: Yes, you have to plant the spring bulbs in the fall, before the first frost. For summer bulbs, you plant them in spring.
Katy: You can plant other plants and flowers in the same beds as your bulbs. I have been doing that. I never had a problem and the bulbs keep blooming. Keep in mind some bulbs after 2 years, like tulips, may not come back. That is just how long the bulbs last. Then it is time for new ones. I plant near the bulbs, just be careful you don't disturb them. Usually the bulbs are far down and I usually never dig them up when planting. Good luck, go ahead and plant those other months. Got to keep those empty spots looking colorful.

Roses, roses and more roses. Those are my all time faves!!
In my garden I have Roses, gladiolas, snap dragons, lavender, freesia, tuberose and asiatic lilly's. I also have a small section with different varieties of sage (purple, tri color, varigated) because I love the smell of fresh cut sage.

I have an apple tree in fron and an ornamental apple tree by my ponds, where there are a lot of ornamental grasses and small schrubs. Large lilac bush and hydrangia bushes(sp) lillies tiger and yellow ones. I get so many given to me I dont know what most of they are anymore! I love roses and hibicus.
