Brain Tumour

Hi to everyone.

My beautiful 8 year old boxer was diagnosed with a brain tumour a month ago. The symptoms started in January with a slight head tilt. The vet originally thought it was an ear infection but her symptoms have progressively worsened and after doing more tests they think that this is the only possibility.

She responded really well to the steroids at first but she is stable for a couple of days and then we have to increase the dose or the symptoms come back. It is mainly at night that she seems to suffer some sort of seizure. Her head goes right back, she loses her balance and just lays there motion less. The next morning she seems better and although is still a bit wobbly she is up and about.

Due to the steroids she is eating and drinking loads and weeing every 30 minutes.

The vets say that there is nothing we can do and to just make her as comfortable as we can and increase the steroids if we need to.

It is awful to see such an active wonderful little thing having to go through this. She still has some quality of life and some days goes for a walk with the other dog but these days are getting less and less.

I would like to hear from anyone that has gone through something similar and just really to know what to expect.

We are in limbo at the minute and the we just want to know if we could be doing any more for her.

Thanks

I have no experience with this however, I wanted you to know that I will keep you and your beautiful boxer in my thoughts and prayers. If you check the search option on Boxer World you will find some valuable information concerning brain tumors.

Hugs to you and your baby.

My childhood dog was diagnosed with lymphoma at 14 yrs. He was riddled with tumors all through his body, Steroids helped a little with pain in the begining. It is so sad to watch them go down, the most important thing is to end the suffering when it gets too much for them. It sounds as if your girl still has quality of life and is not in pain. Just enjoy all the time you have left with her. We let my dog suffer about a month longer than he should have because we just didn't want to do it. Such a hard decision to make and live with. However he was truly miserable and in so much pain, one of the greatest regrets of my life is that he had to be in pain when he should not have been. Feel good vibes to you and your girl.

"Quincy had a brain tumour and chemo was recommended. I was told that he would have no side effects and that there was a possibility that the tumour would shrink although a full cure was unlikely. He was given an estimate of 2 months without the chemo. I went ahead and, as promised, Quincy did not experience any side effects except for lung fibrosis. While a cure was not to be, he lived 11, fairly normal, months. I would do it again in a heart beat." I had previously posted this and it is still true. The cost of the MRI for a positive diagnosis was worth it to me as I needed to know what I was dealing with and any and all possible treatments. The only symptom Quincy had was seizures. Quincy was given Phenobarbital, dexasone and potassium bromide and was relatively seizure free. He did experience the excessive hunger and thirst and gained a lot of weight from the dexasone. He was also urinating every 1.5 hrs at the end. I wish you all the best.
