Boxer Traits

To James re: Chewing

A boxer trait? I don't think so as many puppies will go thru this. We've had boxers that never chewed a thing. Bailey on the other hand did - and still does periodically. He's almost 2 now but the difference is he knows what he can chew and what he can't. He doesn't chew anything that is of vital importance anymore - the other day for example he chewed a cover off a magazine - I can live with that. But between 4 months and approximately 1 year, he was destroying the house. At 7 months we learned about crate training and bought one. It saved our lives (and probably Bailey's too). He was chewing furniture, baseboards, etc. Your puppy will grow out of it and he will learn what he can chew and what's off limits but if you work during the day, you might consider a crate. Saved my sanity. About 5 months ago we put the crate away and so far so good!

Kidney Beaning is when you have been away from your Boxer all day and when they see you arrive at home, they are so excited that they jump up and down and then bend themselves so that their heads are close to their rear end and they walk while in this position, almost like a crab. It is very funny. Anybody else want to take a stab at explaining what Kidney Beaning is?

Common traits?

Hi all! I'm new to this site, but I absolutely love it! I've been reading all about the common traits and I wanted to share some of mine!

Rolling on back, rubbing face on the floor after eating, kidney beaning when my husband and I come in the door, giving lots of kisses, they love to sleep on the bed with their head on the pillow, love to sit in my lap, vertical jumps straight in the air, chewing bones propped on elbows with rear-end in the air. My male, Cooper, loves to race around the yard for no apparent reason. We call it the need for speed!

Uncommon traits?!

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie here but I've been a Boxer nut since I was kid. And here's some of what I remember about my old pal, Khan, and his habits...

Of course, there is plenty that people have already covered and Khan had most of them covered - kidney beans, wind, wind and more wind, hatred of any cleaning implement (Holy cow, the family's gonna be eaten by the vacuum again...), the biggest guilt act on the planet (You do realise that if you don't share your dinner with me I shall die of hunger before the night is out) and plenty more...but here's some that I haven't seen mentioned yet.

Night patrol. This would consist of getting of his bed in the small hours and checking every door in the house. You would know it was your turn when you could hear vigourous sniffing at the foot of the door. I think he did that almost every night without fail.

Talking of doors, he was damn good at opening them too. We had flat handles rather than round ones so to him it was easy. He would simply stand up, put one paw on the handle, one on the wall, push down on the handle and push with the other paw. Simple. Wish I'd thought of it.

He was an extremely loving dog but was also a bit of a maverick. A kind and gentle creature that would amuse us in many ways and annoy us in others - a lovable rogue. But one thing I remember was that he would not eat until we told him to. This was amazing to us, coz he never usually listened to us and we certainly didn't train him to do it. But he simply wouldn't budge until he was told it was ok to eat. Odd. But boy did he dribble (I think in his own way he was threatening to drown us, unless we let him eat).

(Sorry this was a bit long but...well, check the Rainbow Bridge section of the forum for some sort of explanation, if you like).

Enjoy your day and your crazy dogs!

Boxer Pal
common traits

Hi everyone,
My dogs do all the above, only my puppy does the chewing on something with his hind end stuck up in the air. My older baby, Tyson (and yes they are always babies) doesn't do this. Also, I think Max (the pup) must be part cat, because he will hide behind a tree or shrub and jump out at Tyson or anyone that happens by. Does anyone else have a part boxer pup part cat?clowicon

Thanks,
Carla

Running running and running. Throwing bones up in the air so they break everything in the house and all the time looking so darn cute that you can't get mad at them. Licking licking licking everything including our other dog. Trying to make anyone pet her and trying to get your attention to pet her like NOW when I'm on the computer LOL. They're just soooooo like a big love bug. They just like to be loved --- I never knew how loveable boxer could be and I really think it is their trait....... Can you tell I just love these dogs??? And I like the answer about the woo woo -- that describes their talking. It is just so darn funny -- she just cracks me up.
