Boxer too much like pit-bull (mad!)

So we are moving to an apartment in Boston, and are having a really hard time finding a place that will allow dogs, let alone our boxer! They are specifically out-lawing her because they say boxers look too much like pit-bulls and people are afraid of them. Can you believe that??? There is NOTHING vicious about Pepper. This is ridiculous. Has anyone else been discriminated against like this? It seems like this should be a violation of the fair housing act or something!

That STINKS!! If that apartment complex is owned by a property management company, I would complain to the higher-up's there. It's *specifically* stated in our lease that we cannot have any pit-bull or pit-bull mixes or rotties (both stupid, if you ask me). By doing that, it's clear that we can't have those kinds of dogs. Ask to see their lease agreement. Can you have her temperment tested and show the results to the management?

At one point, we had to show Abbi's pedigree to our aparment management because we had a complaint against us that we had a pit-bull. So while I haven't felt the discrimination that you have, I've had to deal with some pretty ignorant people about my dog... :mad:

I don't think boxers look even remotely mean, either. Just look at their cute, almost human-like, faces!

I feel like we are good tenants, and that I don't really want to live somewhere where my whole family isn't embraced. I don't really want to push myself in somewhere, and then have someone complain that they are afraid of my dog. Seriously, they have no problem with my Boston Terrier, and she really is a little terror!

Pepper has been temperment tested, in order to go to Doggy Day Care. I guess it would be a good idea to show that, in case anyone had any questions. Thanks

Just shows the ignorance of some people; boxers don't even remotely resemble pitties. Hope you can find something workable.

The only problem I had was everytime I was out with Zoey, or I was at Petco, small kids would coming running to Zoey wanting to pet her.. which I didnt mind, nor did zoey.. and I would just hear the parents yelling.. "nooo.. he bites!!" And the kids would just quickly back off... Then the parents would ask me if he/she did bite.. and of course I would say "no.. she loves kids!" And they would just proceed to tell me that most pitbulls they know of bite.. :eek:

I've gotten the same reaction a few times especially with Dino who is brindle. One guy saw us out walking and asked, "what kind of dog is that?" I told him. Then he said, "that's like a pit bull, isn't it?"!! Then we were walking down the sidewalk another time and a guy was coming toward us and said, "he's not going to eat me is he?" I said, "he might kiss you". Then he said, "yeah some pit bulls are pretty nice" !!! I don't get it. Boxers look nothing like pit bulls. How do people come up with that?

I get a lot of that too. The worst is when my students (inner-city school) see my boxer pictures and say (I want a boxer...but I already have _ pitbulls). Then I proceed to tell my kiddos how sweet the boxers are and a few of them actually get turned off by it!! They want tough, fighting dogs...so I make it veeery clear that boxers are sweet kissy dogs and dog fighting or just teaching you dog to be mean is wrong in so many ways.

Can't everyone just love and respect animals like we do????!!!!!! :(

It's really sad because all of the pits that I've come across are so nice and loving. DH had one before we met and said that it was the best dog he'd owned, and he's had a few.

I get in disagreements with people all the time about Pit bulls, so many of them are loving and friendly. If you raise a dog to be agressive and mean thats exactly what youll get no matter the Breed.

Roxy plays with two Pits near our house a couple of times a week that are probably a lot friendlier then she is. All people know is what they hear from TV and the media, poor pits get a really bad name....

Unfortunately, I have faced this same problem when trying to find a new apartment. A lot of management companies write into their lease that boxers are not allowed, stating that they are a "bully" breed, etc. These same companies do not usually allow Rotties, Pit Bulls, Chows, Akitas, Huskies, and some don't even allow Bulldogs! Plain old wiggly, waddly bulldogs! I hate it that a few evil people who have extorted a few poor breeds' instincts have ruined chances for those of us who love these dogs for the wonderful, amazing, loving animals they are. :(
