BUSA'S DAD

Boxer Pal
I know it is kind of early to be talking about this, but I would like to know the facts. BUSA is 12 weeks old, and a friend of mine has a 10 week old female, they are always suggesting about having puppies later on, I dont know anything about the breeding process, and would like to know more! Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Brent

My first thoughts are RESEARCH!!!!

Then examine why you want to breed...........

and the RESEARCH more!!!!

Are both dogs registered? Going to be shown and earn their conformation titles? If not, you may want to just forget about it now - if they are not kennel club quality or show quality, they are probably not breeding quality.

If you do both have extremely high quality dogs that fit the Boxer standard, and you earn their titles, you will want to do some health testing. It's probably a good idea to find yourself a breeder to be your mentor, and show you what testing needs to be done. At a minimum, you should be testing hips, heart, and eyes (I'm NOT a breeder, so apologies to all if I've missed something critical). You will also want to research their pedigrees, and find out the full genetic history of as many generations as you can.

And I agree with Maniago - examine your reasons for wanting to breed - are you trying to improve the breed, or is it just because you know of two dogs of opposite sex?

You will probably find that a lot of people here are very passionate about this topic, and most will probably tell you that breeding should not be entered into lightly. I am no exception! I have seen a lot of very poorly bred Boxers, working in rescue, and there is really nothing sadder than adding to the overpopulation of badly bred dogs.

You have a good two years before either of these dogs will be ready for breeding - use that time wisely.

Rather than offer information that has been stated several times before, I'd like to suggest that you do a search using the Boxer World search engine. In case you've never used the search function, it's a little blue button a little bit above this thread. The reason that I suggest doing a search is because this topic has come up numorous times before so you would definitley find answers to several questions. Also, a lot of these threads end up being closed because they become so heated.

I'd also like to third the motion to do your research!! Not just you, but the people that own the female as well. Both of you need to know what you would be getting yourselves into. Especially the female's owner as they'd be doing most of the work in caring for the mother and of course the pups.

there's also a 'virtual breeding' site that I'm sure you'll find using the search at BoxerWorld. Plus tons of stories of what things can go wrong.....and how badly. Research is the advice for the day, so I will 4th it...... :p ...if there is such a thing??

There is so much more to breeding than just putting a male and female together. This topic has been covered in depth many times, even recently. If you want to be an asset to the breed, only breed good representatives of the breed that have been health tested. To do otherwise is a dis-service to the dogs, breed, and the people who get the puppies. With boxers exploding in popularity, more people will be breeding in the dark, totally unconcerned abut pedigree, quality or health; just supplying demand and making a buck. Don't add to that segment of the population. Right now, boxers are poised to follow on the heels of German Shepards (who were totally ruined by popularity) and more recently, the Rottweiller.

responsible breeders sell with conditions to make sure their dogs don't end up part of this cycle. Pets are sold with limited registrations on breeding contracts. Show dogs are more expensive and sometimes come with contracts that control breeding until certain stipulations are met (like showing the dog and/or earning a CH). If your breeder sold your pup without these contracts, or charged a flat fee, or more for females than males, then they are not in the ranks of what we would call responsible breeders. Many folks in boxer clubs started out with dogs like that, and when they became more educated about the breed, neutered them, (and some started over with better dogs. ) Life is a learning process, and the boxer will benefit and hopefully survive this latest popularity swing mostly intact with the help of education.

I have to agree with everything that has been said. There is more to breeding then having a good male and female. There is a LIFETIME commitment that you make to not only YOUR DOGS BUT TO THE PUPS and the owners of the future pups.
Research is the best thing that anyone can tell you. there have been SEVERAL topics on this issue.
Look at the reasons you want to breed, get a mentor, become active in a rescue- the reputable breeders, while they do not have the time to committe to rescue help out rescues and have a GREAT respect for rescues, go to a HIGH KILL shelter, see all the dogs that get put to sleep- MILLIONS of dogs are put to sleep a year because of pet overpopulation, find out about the pedigree and temperment of the dogs going back 5 GENERATIONS, do the health testing (not go see a vet and the vet says the dog is healthy, do the OFA heart, hips, tyroid etc etc tests) and if after ALL this you still want to breed then that is your choice.
Breeding is not a one time deal. you made a commitment to your dog and the puppies that will come from that dog and the new owners.
