Hi,

We just got our boxer 2 months ago. Hes the friendliest little guy. He gets along with all other dogs that he has come into contact with. I have read that boxers are fairly good cat dogs. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks a lot!

I think it just depends on the Boxer and to a certain extent socialisation. My first Boxer was actually afraid of cats - when he joined our family we had a rather fearsome persian who would frighten anyone evilicon - she soon put him in his place (I made a hash of the introductions so it was my fault Bo was worried about cats .. ).

My next two Boxers would tolerate cats. Then we come to Bella, she has extrememly high prey drive, we can not have a cat and will not let her near a cat (our persian went to the bridge before Bella joined our family). Amy can not be trusted with a cat either. Ruben and Layla are okay. Layla will tolerate and Ruben wants to 'mother' everthing smaller than himself, much to the horror of most cats :)

It was only my first 3 Boxers who joined the family with an existing cat - the others (excpet Bella) were exposed to cats on and off when growing up as part of socialisation, but it's hard to find people with cats who are keen to allow Boxers to play with them  Bella came to us at 2 years of age with her anti-cat behaviour well established.

I think it depends on both the cat and the dog. Jackson has been around cats since he was a puppy, but now he loves to play with them like toys. Harley our second cat loves the dogs. So the dogs are always pouncing on him. Lizzie our first cat has never liked dogs and doesn't want anything to do with them. Jackson learned this early on and leaves her alone. However, Autumn our second dog, she was a rescue, can't take a hint that Lizzie wants nothing to do with her and chases her around. Sometimes Harley can be rubbing under Autumn's belly, and Autumn is more interested in getting Lizzie from under the couch.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. It sounds like you have a lot of boxer experience. I really have a good feeling about hobbes. The intro will be important but I think it will be alright. I have my fingers crossed anyway:) .

Good luck with the c-a-t-s! My boys have not been well received by any cats they have come into contact with. As a matter of fact, we stopped bringing them to my in-laws because their new cat beats the hell out of both boxer boys. I had to pick claws out of Mugsy's rump once and Shadow got scratched in the face. The cat was like a wild, clawing, windmill! Hope you have a better feline experience!

I have 3 Boxers and yes it all depends on the dog.

Ginger thinks they are chasing toys, She just chases, never hurts them though. The fun is in the chase.

Cannilla puts up with them as long as they don't rub up on her.

Tuffy....He lives for his cats. Cleans them, rubs on them, gaurds them and has to sleep with at least one of them. All the cats know if you want a warm spot to sleep, go find Tuffy.

Most of the pictures I have of Tuffy there is a cat somewhere around him. I have a couple in my pictures here with him loving all over one.

My boxers are not good with cats at all, but we have outdoor cats. Samson, if he catches one, will lick it until it appears to have had a shower. He has never hurt one. Delilah, I will not go into details, cannot be trusted with a cat at all. I do believe; however, if we had indoor cats and if the boxers were exposed to them all of the time, it would be a much calmer situation.

I agree with everyone, it depends upon the boxer.

Our 2 boxers are both very very good with cats...i have pictures in my gallery to prove it, but they like anything smaller than them..they always wanna play...i think it just depends on the boxer!

It all depends on the boxer. Magnum loves cats, but he can never get one to play with him. :(

Omar, on the other hand, has an extremely high prey drive and hates cats - he came to us this way when we adopted him two years ago.

Boxer Buddy
Sailor loves to play with the cat more than the other dog! Flash his canine pal is pretty laid back and plain lazy. On the other hand though Cheetah, Sailors feline friend is much more fun to chase and she likes to "egg him on" and they play until one of them can't go on...hehehehe It's really quite funny as she seems to be able to outsmart him alot:D They are both around the same age 7 and 8 months old. Hope this helps, Malinda
