Book Rental?

Wow...I don't think I could afford to send my kids back to school. No book rentals here in Michigan either...but we sure pay enough in taxes to cover it!

You guys are lucky !!!

Each year we have to buy the books which in total for both kids can cost up to 400€ & that is not including the supplies and new clothes etc.

I remember at school in Ireland we could buy second hand books from the classes ahead of us but here the teachers chosse newly realised school books.
I think that it is a total disgrace that the schools do not stand up to these publishing companies who are putting pressure on the teachers to use the new books.

They have government funds available but you have to have a fairly low income. Kinda like the free lunch program. I don't know what they do if you would tell them you can't pay. Luckily, I have managed to come up with the money!!

Well for goodness sakes they are making everyone have fairly low income by the time you're done paying for the books! :D My son's B-day is 5 days before school starts every year and he always gets stuck with new clthes and backpacks for presents! I'd hate to break the news he gets school books too! That must really stink! At least you managed to work it out. Imagine people with a ton of kids! :(

I'd hate to break the news he gets school books too! That must really stink! At least you managed to work it out. Imagine people with a ton of kids! :(

My son's birthday is August 15th. School starts this year on the 15th. He always gets ripped off because by the time we pay book rental, money is tight. This year, he wanted an IHome for his IPod. I put it and a few other things in layaway!

How funny my son's birthday is August 15 too! School starts here on the 21st. How old is your son? mine will be 11, he's my oldest. Same here with the birthday stuff! He always tells me I did it on puropse to him, ruined his b-day and he's mad he can never have a party at school because he's b-day is in the summer! I always tell him he has a huge imagination, he wasn't even a planned pregnancy!

I am really suprised at the cost of books. I lived in Indiana growing up and went to public school in Lafayette and I never had to pay for books either.

Now my family and I live in Illinois and we don't pay for book rental here either. Of course there are fees associated with school...but nothing so outlandish as that!

I would write my concerns to the school committee. There is no reason they should be charging that much...they should be able to fundraise to buy new books and such, not pawn off all the cost on YOU!

He will officially be a teenager!! 13...and he is so excited!
