Heard this a couple days ago but im not sure if its true or not:

To not put a Beware of Dog sign out cause if someone comes into your yard and they do happen to nip or bite someone even though they are in your yard your still held responsible because you had a sign saying beware of dog and knew the dog had it in them to bite...to instead put a dog lives here or dog in yard sign.

very good point...wonder if thats true?

I was advised by my insurance agent not to put one of these signs up as it does open you up to liability because you are advertising a "dangerous dog" so our got thrown out! Also some councils can require you to register your dog as a dangerous dog & follow certaing protocol if you have one of those signs up. guilt by admission even if the dog is more likely to lick you to death!!!

My neighbor made me a cute wooden sign that says " 4 Crazy Boxers Run This Place". Mine like to look out the front door and window to watch people walk by. When anyone looks up at the door (my house sits up on a hill) they see 4 babies slobbering all over the door and usually just seeing the boys will make them cross to the other side of the street. If they only knew what big babies they really are :)

I heard the same thing about not using a beware of dog sign. Seems it can be a liability issue. Terrible thing when you have to worry about being sued by suit happy people.
I put a in case of emergency, please rescue us sign (dog) in my window.
I am lucky that he barks very loud when someone pulls into the driveway and when they come up to the door.
My insurance company do not consider a boxer a dangerous dog. I have Allstate. But I think some companies have them on there list and they should not be.
Anyone out there that works for an insurance company to give the real scoop?

I was just going to say this. Be careful with "Security Dog" "Guard Dog" "Beware of Dog". With people being So sue happy these days, signs could get you in a bit of trouble. Like the above quote... by having these signs, even if your dogs are not aggressive, if someone comes in your yard, breaks into your home, anything, and your dog so much a scratches them, they have a case against you because (and I know its incredibly rediculous) by posting signed of these types, you KNEW your dog was agressive and youe KNEW it was a danger... etc. I know its so silly to even think of cuz most of our babies will lick someone to death before attacking them.

I would suggest the "I can make it to the fence in 3sec, can you?" sign, as thats not suggesting your dog is aggressive, just that its quick, hehe. Or "dog in yard" or "Curb your dog, I curb mine" stuff like that, or anything that says "dog in yard".

Just a suggestion, I know its horrible to have to think that way, but its just an example of thw world we live in.

I mean if an armed robber were to run through my yard and Harley went after him, the criminal could sue me for not having a fence!

Wow..I'm glad this thread got started and everyone has made comments. I had no idea a sign like that could be a liability. I think I'll reconsider my signage. I did see one similar to the "I can get to the gate...." that said "I can get to the door in 2.8 seconds, can you?" I'm kinda liking that one as opposed to the Warning sign I originally was going to put up.

I don't know how true the thread is of not putting the beware of sign. The only thing is the sign won't protect you if anything was to happen to someone intruding or even having been invited to your house. This also goes for signs like swim at your own risk, no trespassing, etc. If a kid was to trespass on your property and drown in your pool the sign "swim at your own risk" or "no trespassing" really doesn't help. Does that make sense?

Pyermoli- I think I understand what your saying. But even with a swim at your own risk type of thing... although its posted, it doesnt always help. Although if a person disregards No Trespassing and Swim at your own Risk signs... they are totaly at fault (though the sue happy may argue otherwise) Whereas when you have Beware of Dog, your bringing another being into the equasion. (sp?) Like, if your posting for people to beware of your dog, then you must know that dog is dangerous. Although, if you think about it... no signs do anything anyways... Stop signes tell you to "stop" if you dont and get in a wreck, of course its not the signs fault.

As silly and twisted as it is, nowadays we always have to read things from a different point of view, just to protect ourselves from those who have nothing better to do than to twist things for their benefit and a lawsuit.

It's true that stop signs tell you to stop and if you wreck it's your fault. But it is atleast in VA the law that a sign will only protect you to a certain extent. As a kid my boyfriend jumped over a fence into his neighbours yard They had a sign posted that said no trespassing, my BF's family sued because BF was impailed (sp?) by bamboo while trespassing on their yard and won. They aren't what I would consider sue happy people. It's hard to explain by writing it. I understand what people are saying about the dog signs, but there will always be those loopholes where no matter what you do to protect yourself you weren't looking out enough for the rights of others. I guess we will have to live with that. It's sad that some people might even try harder to get bit by one's dog if they have the sign, just for the purpose of suing because they know the ins and outs of the law.

I Wonder About...

I'm just being a smart a$$ here, but i wonder about the sign i wanted to put up..."Break in (with a pic of Konah) Make his day" Because technically it would make his day, he LOVES people and would lick them to death. So technically it would be true *L*...what do you all think?

WOW, I had no idea my post would get such a response??? I am so grateful to all of you for your input, and am reconsidering my Beware Of Dog sign.....I would've never thought it might be a liability to me? I think a "boxer lives here" or "make it to the gate sign" might be better.....Thanks all :)

Truly appreciated, Lindsay
