Hey Jenn,
Let me start by saying congratulations with your new beagle baby!!!
I have a beagle who will be 8yrs old on 1/1 ad he is great with the boxers and they LOVE him!!! Everytime the boxers wake up the first thing they do is look for the beagle (Benny).
As far as the beagle goes its all about him. If he wants to play he will egg those boxers on until they chase him, but if he is not in the mood he lets them know it. He is alittle grouchy in his old age, but has been the true definition of "mans best friend"

I think you will really enjoy having a beagle around your house.

Well, I got Zuko on Friday, He is a head strong little dude that is for sure, he and Cash are getting along famously, but Zuko gets carried away and bites at Cashs' Jowels and neck, chest etc. Cash shows no hint of pain, but I know that Boxers have a high level of pain tolerance too. And that Zuko is just being a puppy. Will Cash really let him know when he has had enough? My other concern is that if Cash lets him play this rough, Zuko will think it is acceptable with other dogs, and I know it isn't going to be once we can get Zuko out to the parks, should I be breaking them up and getting Zuko into timeout, or should I just let them sort it out? :confused: I think once he looses those puppy teeth, things will get better, but honestly, these people gave Zuko up for plain old puppy issues, nothing else.... He has i in his head that "chase" is a fun game, I hate that, and never gave into Cash demanding a game of chase me, Zuko, we will have to try to "break" that habit. We are close on house training, and think he will be all set once he actually settles into the household. I keep the animal food in my guest room behind a closed door, well he KNOWS what is in that room and went directly there this morning to let us know it was Breakfast time!

Of course I loaned out my copy of TDL, but am going to get it back ASAP. Get to brushing up on a whole list of long forgotten puppy, dominance issues that Zuko will have or shows already.

BTW does anyone know of a Beagle site?? I know nothing rivals our great and powerfull BW, but I may need some specialized help in the future!!

We have six beagles and foster for beagle rescue....Our beagles get along great with everyone... Digger is the alpha male at our house. (Only letting Biscuit our female boxer be above him in rank) even bossing around our 95 pound male boxer and also our 80 pound German Shorthair Pointer.....They are awesome little dogs but deffinately not for everyone.....Last year in Feb our rescue took in over 20 "Christmas Beagle Puppies"......They can be stubborn, obstanite, hard headed and hard to house train, They love to chew anything and everything, and crate training is a MUST....On the other hand you won't find a sweeter dog on earth.....As my husband is famous for saying god made them so cute and loving so you couldn't kill them.....

hahaha I believe that, NOW!! He is a ball of fire for sure, but then he settles, just when I can't take it anymore, I get that cold little nose right in my face for kisses. I have been visiting the puppy section here and brushing up, but thank you so much for the link! I will spend a good chunk of time on that site I am sure. As far as x-mas babies, I feel so very bad for pups that are given as x-mas presents, and the couple I got him from sent out the e-mail right before x-mas and I just didn't want this little guy to go to a home as a "gift" and be turned away again, at 11 weeks he had already been bounced from two homes, mine being the 3rd (and FINAL) destination. Hard headedness for sure, but I sort of see that as an endeering character trait, the house training is going OK, we are having issues with pooping in the house, and have blocked off areas of the house where he would be proned to go. The biggest chewing problem thus far is he thinks Cash is his ONLY chew toy. I am letting them work it out and inspecting Cashs' "war wounds" at night after Zuko is in his crate for bedtime.

Jess, I know that you and I have PMed in the past on the subject of Beagles, would you mind terribly PMing me your e-mail addy in hopes that you may be able to guide me through any issues we have in the future?

Beagles are wonderful dogs. We have a 4 yr old beagle (Scooter), he is our first baby. Now we've added 2 boxers (Ali) 9 months and Lennox 9 wks. Before Lennox came, our beagle was a fun loving caring dog. He's the smartest dog I've ever seen, he can be a little stubborn while exploring but over all a great dog. The problem came when we got little Lennox. Now Scooter feels like the third wheel. He is having trouble adjusting to the idea of having two boxers in the house. I'm so tired and confused. All of my time at home is going towards making the beagle feel like he's a huge part of the family. He practically trained my first boxer. I must be honest, we thought about finding him a new home where he can be happy but I can not bring myself to do it. Everytime I walk through the door I see those big brown eyes, I think to myself, "man we can make this thing work." Hopefully the older Lennox gets, the more the beagle will adjust. It's a wonderful problem to have. I'm glad we have all of them. Wish us luck.

I wish you all the luck in the world! Boxers play their own special game with each other, I think that any other dog would feel left out, but do stick with it, everyone will find their place in the pack and settle in! I know exactly what you mean by trying to make scooter feel like a part of the family, I am still very careful to give cash his own special loving, he is and always will be my big ole baby! I think these things just take time and alot more patience than god gave us human beings. Lennox is just a pup, so he needs to find his way, I am sure Scooter will help him out on that front sooner or later!

I had forgotten how trying a time it is to have a pup in the house, I just keep telling myself those teeth will not be around forever, he will learn the rules around here, and someday I will not be pulling my hair out wishing everyone would "just get along"

Thank you for those wonderful words. I can already tell you are a great parent and your beagle will fit in well. The good thing about your new addition is, the beagle is the baby. They can be very spoiled and territorial if raised alone for any number of years. Really that's any dog. Heck, I'm the same way.

I know it's long, but I think it might be worth reading!

I grew up with two beagles and have a beagle now. (My husband grew up with boxers, so that's why one of each.) My beagle's name is Bopper and she's 2.5 years. She was awful as a puppy; always wanting attention, I guess since she didn't have anyone but me to entertain her. She was very mouthy (biting) but grew out of it.

If you haven't figured it out already, beagles live life through their noses. Most people will say they are impossible to train, but not true. They will do anything, I mean anything, for a treat. So keeps lots of biscuits and treats around and you can manipulate her behavior any way you want with a little food reward! Also do NOT let the beagle out without a leash. I've tried, but that nose just gets her in trouble every time. She'll come when called (she's very well behaved for a beagle), but if she's got a scent the entire rest of the world does not exist.

Beagles can bark a lot. Mine doesn't bark much for a beagle. I think it depends on how it's raised. My beagle was inside a lot and not a lot of barking dogs in the neighborhood. But then another beagle who barked a lot moved in with us for a while and that's where she finally learned to bark more.

Bopper had no idea how to play with our boxer for a while. But she learned that boxing thing. They mostly chase each other around the yard and wrestle. They bite, but just play bite and never draw blood, either on accident or on purpose.

Bopper has had a little weight troubles because we lived in an apartment for a while. Just stick to a good feeding schedule and not too many treats. The boxer has learned to wolf down her food like a beagle. We feed them twice a day; the beagle gets 1 to 1.5 cups of food per day, which is less than what the bag says. And maybe 2 bicuits a day. And a chewie before bed every other day or so to keep those teeth clean.

Update

Thanks jnlflip, I will put you on my little "beagle list" and PM you those cute and caotic stories as they come!! I will relate that the other night as I was sitting on the couch Zuko got up with me, looked at me with the most loving eyes you ever saw, just then I felt something warm on the side of my leg, the little devil peed right next to me on the COUCH!! I have been informed that I was initiated properly into Beagle ownership right then and there... (thanks jess)

Cash and Zuko are getting along better, less and less cuts and scrapes on Cashs' Muzzle. they really are seeming to get into each other! I think that it will all work out for us. Zuko gets his last set of shots this weekend and he will be going to the dog park to learn some lessons about the "real world" I for one can't wait! None of my animals is alowed out the front door sans leash, he is learning this rule quickly, it is easier for him though as his big brother knows this is a zero tolerance policy!! We have been working on commands sparingly as I have not quite gotten the hang of training a pup while Cash is going through the routine flawlessly right next to him, after this weekend, we are going to be doin some serious obedience training, food motivated of course!

Your Welcome Jenn and Digger wanted me to ask you to tell Zuko that anytime he needs ideas on how a proper Beagle should act that he can feel free to contact him....He thinks he needs more work in the "eating of owners stuff department".......At Zukos age Digger had two couches,one brand new Blazer interior and god knows how many shoes,hats and remotes...To his credit....I now work at the vets office where I take my dogs and was reading Diggers file the other day and was just amazed that he is still with us....I can't believe the things he ate some I remember well and others jarred my memory back into panic mode....Ahhh beagle puppies gotta love them......
