Kona barks only if she hears something not normal. We have houses close to ours, and she's used to the neighbors coming and going all day. She does bark when she's trying to tell us she needs something, like to go out, to eat, when she's out of water, or to play. She just keeps barking until you figure out what it is that she wants/needs. I guess it just depends on the dog.

Willis only barks under two conditions: playing or when we introduce a new toy to him that he doesn't "get" yet. Teaching him to speak was so difficult! He still mouths a bark with no noise about 10 times before he actually lets out a big loud big boy bark.

Rocky only barks when he is really excited or feels overly threatened. But boy when he does bark you can feel the sonic waves coming off the bass in his bark! Very manly bark my pup has!
Clank, about the outdoor thing...my first boxer was an outdoor lover and he preferred to be outside for long periods of time. Not really a problem as he had a scary face (to most strangers) and no one really messed with him. His elbows scabbed up from laying on the concrete patio. Today however is a new day and age and boxers are seen as possesions...they have a value that would put them at risk for being taken. We also seem to have more sick people in the world. If you do the outdoor thing please be aware that they are not built for either hot or cold extremes and be please take precautions...against sickos. We are all boxer lovers here and sometimes react in extremes to situations, but all of us are here for advice and this board has TONS of great info available. I wish you joy with your new boxer baby!

I am a new mom as I am sure many of you know! AND as I have gone along there are somethings that I have had to learn, like IAMS is not a good dog food! Rawhide is a choking hazard, and my little one gets a bump where she gets her vaccinations!!!

On that note!! My kids are outside while we are at work when it is warm enough!! When it is hot we leave on a sprinkler because they like to play and stand in it!! In the winter they have the kitchen and the backyard so they can choose to be in or out!!!!
The whole reason for the post?? My two rarely bark!!! Mostly when they play and from time to time on a rare occasion when someone thay don't know comes close to the house!

I agree--well said Mama Zookeeper. A few years ago there were freaks in our area poisoning dogs by throwing meat over fences. I am SOOO paranoid. Also with a ton of coyotes around us (even though Boo & Skye are big dogs) I do not feel comfortable leaving them outside for very long. Too many potential dangers. When we got them we even got a security system in case of a fire (I do worry excessively, but they're my babies).

I would like to congratulate you on your new pup. You came to the right place to get the info you're looking for. Please do not be discouraged because of some of the responses. You are doing such a great job just by coming to Boxerworld to learn more. Because most of us here love our dogs SO MUCH, sometimes it might seem like someone is talking down to you or something when they are telling you what to do. Also it is hard to cenvey your tone thru e-mail. Everyone is just trying to help you and your little guy have a great, safe and happy life together. PLEASE come back and feel free to post your questions. I know that I would love to help you. You can always pm me if you want.
To everyone who has non-barkers,
.....you are so lucky! Reznor began to bark at almost everything after he was about a year old. I think it was triggered when I had to go to MO for 10 days when my sister gave birth to my neice. Even though Reznor and my husband love eachother, while I was gone Reznor decided that it was fun to bark all day. Now he barks at the mailman, people walking by, loud trucks (esp. UPS) driving by, when too many leaves blow by, etc. etc.
In case anyone is wondering, yes we work on this issue everyday and have even worked w/ private trainers. (Sorry, I didn't want to get "yelled" at!)I think (and the trainers have told me) that it has to do w/ the fact that I spoiled him too much as a pup and he thinks he is in charge and sometimes just barks to let people (or objects!) know that he is present and requires attention!
Sugar did not really bark when we rescued her. She was the BEST dog for about 3-4 months. Then, she relaxed and began to learn all of Reznor's "special" tricks. She still barks about 25% as much as he does though, listens MUCH better and behaves better in general.
Funny thing is that even when they are both furiously barking at their arch enemy the mailman, Sugey girl is still wagging her tail. Like my husband always says, good thing we're "wierdos" too because otherwise, our Boxer doggies would seem wierd. I guess we chose the right dogs.

My Fondue wants to be heard 
I have a 5 month old boxer named Fondue. She barks at the sound of dog tags. Which is a scream to me because she doesn't wear tags, nor did the dogs she lived with for the first 8 weeks of her life. Somehow she figured out that there was a dog attached to that noise and she needs to let them know that they are in her territory. We have a walking trail behind my residence and she believes that is her territory. Periodically she barks when we are playing. But mostly she just "talks".
Enjoy your puppy. I am 40 years old and this is my first dog. It has been a very positive life changing experience!

Boxer Booster
Owen is a bit of a mix with the barking. He didn't bark when we first got him (rescued at 1 yr old April 2004.) After a while he started barking while playing. (He goes totally "sonic bark" nuts at a bike horn?!?) He does bark at barking dogs and people on the other side of the street. I am trying to teach him "Hush" for when we have the windows open, and the dogs nearby bark. So far he's in the middle. If your dog is as easy to train as mine is, you should be able to teach him to stop on command.
