Boxer Pal
I have justed recieved a 8 week old boxer. He is awesome. I am not concerned with the love and attention that is required for a puppy because I definetly give him plenty of that. However I am concerned with barking once he grows and matures. Do boxers bark a lot? I live in a large neighborhood where barking can be a problem to the neighbors. Is a lot of barking to be expected? Also is there any way I can begin training him now so that barking will not be a major problem in the future. He will be an inside and outside dog (about 50 - 50 most of the time). Thanks for all of your thoughts!

I got Oscar when he was 6 weeks, he is now 4 years old and i still haven't heard him bark, on the other hand I now have Jasmine and she is 4 months old and she barks quite a bit, but only when playing. I think it really varies, I have read that boxers guard with their ears, so they don't bark unless it's necessary. I have noticed by reading the other posts that some bark a lot and some don't. I think it all depends on the individual dog. Anyway, I know this probably didn't help you too much, but I wish you the best of luck with your new puppy!

Hi Clank,

Boxers really are indoor dogs. They are not meant to be left outdoors, even 50% of the time. They are unable to tolerate heat and/or cold for very long at all.

Also, many many things can go wrong if you leave your Boxer out in the yard unsupervised. They are essentially like 2 year old kids. Would you leave your 2 year old outside 50/50?

My Boxers can jump a 6 foot privacy fence without much effort. They can also dig under one.

If you look in some of the other forums on this web site, you will find horrible stories of peoples dogs being poisoned (people throwing poison over the fence into their backyard -- the dogs ingesting and dying from it). You will also find stories of peoples dogs being stolen from their backyard....Boxers dying from heat exhaustion.....Boxers being attacked by the neighbors aggressive dog that jumped the fence...

Something to think about

Good luck

My Molly is 14 weeks now and she very very rarely barks. The only time she really goes at it is when I am in the shower and she can hear me but cannot see me.
Even while the Neighbours dogs stands at the fence barking at Molly she just stands her ground wagging her little nub and does not let out a peep.

Harley only barks when he hears someone outside close to the house and it's only a couple of deep woofs and some growling. He also sometimes barks when I'm talking to him and when he plays, but he is 100% quieter than most dogs. I would also be concerned about leaving the dog outside, especially in the heat. Harley can barely make it around the block in the summer. It doesn't help that he's dark. Also, in the winter it takes a lot of energy for a dog like a Boxer to keep itself warm and most of them have very high metabolisms.

bark

charlie has a nifty bark it's short and to the point unless he's scared now then he does that hackles up long bark combined with shrilling growl but again it's pretty well just one. As if that's just enough to do it. He did figure out that i thought his one lil bark was cute so if he needs me he will stand behind me and kinda make a murph sound, and if it doesnt work he'll bark once. he's economical with the barks i tell you. but yea i have two yip yip dogs on either side of me and one terrified barker like charlie on the other side and generally he just runs around listening to them bark if they are doing it for the sheer joy of it but if scaredy cat next door starts barking it means they all hear something spooky and then and only then does charlie send out his one yowling bark.

We don't leave our dogs outside because the houses are really close together and I don't want them to bug the neighbors. They both were crate trained until they settled down and now have free roam of the house when we're gone. I usually leave them for up to 7 hours with no problem.

I just talked to an older man yesterday about his Boxer--he had had him only 18 mos. When I asked where he was, told me that he tried to jump a 6 ft fence and hung himself. I could see my dogs doing something like that (stupid and goofy) so I feel better leaving them inside. I agree with Courtney--they are happier inside.

Let's not jump on Clank yet regarding leaving his dog 50% outside, let's let him explain what that means... like leaving him outside when he is at work, which many people on this board do.

I do want to caution you though Clank that leaving a puppy outside without supervision will surely bring you some trouble of one kind or another. I've only left my two out in the yard after they've matured and proven that they are not jumpers and diggers. Plus I've spent the money to put in things like a digging pit and other toys to distract them out there.

As for barking, most boxer don't bark like some other breeds do, but if you leave them in the yard too long unsupervised, they will start barking at whatever that may cross the yard or walk by outside the fence... hope this helps.

Bark Whats That!!

Sadie never barks, we have dogs on both sides of us, I use to ask people will she bark, and at what age...when we started going to dog parks and day care I was so impressed...my little girl spoke "barked" only during play time never at home, she's very mellow. We also put in a doggy door for her a couple months ago to come in and out when she needs to...I do worry when were not home But she seams to do well. good luck Holly & Sadie

Our boxer (Keno-7 mos) rarely barks...like someone else said, he really only barks if he see's someone or something outside...he also barks at times when our Jack Russell is barking....

I'd like to reinterate (sp?) that boxers are not outside dogs..not even for 20% of the time...in fact, I posted a few days ago about a boxer in our neighborhood who is being left outside (chained up) all day and then put in a shed at night...I am outraged by people who have either not educated themselves about the care & needs of a boxer before getting one or else they just don't care --period! Please do not leave your boxer outside !! If you can't provide an inside home for him then maybe a boxer isn't the best choice of puppy for you...
Boxers are very special dogs...they require a lot of extra special care too...
but believe me, they are well worth every bit of it ! :)
