Super Boxer
Recently, when I was looking for a place to board Rita and Munson for an overnight in another state I called a daycare/boarding facility that was very highly recommended by vets in the area. This facility told me that they were no longer accepting boxers. When I questioned them further they indicated that since the breeds popularity has taken off within the last couple of years there are so many BYB's who are not controling for temperment. Further, that the breed (because of its history) needs to be watched that these breeders do not ruin the entire breed by allowing these undesirable traits to crop up (again). They also said that almost every boxer that had been in their facility within the last 8 months was aggressive in some way.
I am terrified of this in that I do not want to have problems like this for years to come. I am so afraid that this mentality will become the general public opinion and we will all have to deal with insurance and other issues. I not only get angry when I hear about this type of thing, I get anxious and nervous.
I am afraid of this and I think that we all need to not only stand up for the breed, but we need to do so in a well-informed, well-educated manner. It is important for all of us to be calm, yet assertive when it comes to defending the breed. I do not want people to blow me off because they feel like I am aggressive (just like my crazy dog). Anyway, I think a very well written and informative letter that genuinely strives to inform would be an excellent idea. I am not many things, but being a doctoral student kind of requires that I be a decent writer in order to get anyone to publish my work. I would be thrilled to be involved in any letter writing campaign and maybe we can even post a draft here. Collectively we can all send something to our local papers. Maybe I am going too far, and this post is too long. So... that's all I guess.
