About 2 months ago, my sweet 6 1/2 year old boxer, Catfish, started limping. The first trip to the vet resulted in an Rx of Previcox and Tramadol for the pain and inflamation. After a month of meds, I took him back to the vet because the limp persisted. This time the xrays showed a tumer in his right front leg. We went to the Oncologist Thursday morning, and were going to have a biopsy done on another small lump Friday morning (before opting for the bone biopsy) per her suggestion.

When I got home from work Thursday afternoon, I took Catfish to the front yard to get some playtime in before his appointment Friday morning.
That's when things got really bad, really fast. He went to jab for his frisbee, as he always does, and managed to break the bone with the tumor in it. We rushed him to the emergency clinic where he stayed overnight. We were able (after many prayers were answered) to get him in to see a wonderful surgeon on Friday afternoon, and just yesterday he had his leg amputated. I will not get to see him until Monday, and we'll not know for a few days what the diagnosis is on the type of cancer he has.

Can anyone relate to my situation or have any advise for me? I'm just absolutely sick with what the future holds for my sweet angel Catfish. Thanks for any feedback you all have.

Jessie

I am so sorry to hear about catfish....But you know Boxers are such sports and never seem to complain much at all. I pray that he'll be back to himself in no time....so he's a one leg less ,the heart will be just as big. All the more reasons to spoil him like crazy.
Pleae keep us updated on his recovery.

I am so sorry to hear about Catfish. We accuse Chyna of "catfishing" when she lays on the tile after playing hard and her lips flap around and make funny sounds.
You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Good-bye to my sweet son

I first want to let every single one of you know how much your support and encouragement has helped me through this fight for Catfish. It's taken me a few days to be able to update you all as I've just been trying to deal with this. I came home on Wednesday to check on Catfish at lunch because he had been slowing down quite a bit over the last couple of days. His spirits were high, but I think he possibly had another tumor growing in his hips becuase he would sometimes struggle to get his back legs moving.

When I got home for lunch, he rushed to greet me like always, but I noticed his eye looked funny. When I held it up to the light, I could see that the entire brown eye was a deep red and that he could not see out of it. His tumors were continuing to grow and more would show up all the time, so I knew that it was going to be my responsibility to keep him from suffering.

I decided to make arragements for Thursday evening so that I could spend all day with him. On Thursday, he layed his head in my lap all morning and we just sat there with one another. Later we loaded them in the car and went to grab some BBQ for lunch. It had been raining all day, but God parted the clouds just long enough for us to go to the park (his absolule favorite place) and he chowed on ribs, brisket, potato salad, and even had an entire banana pudding with whipped cream for dessert! He then started running all around the park, sloshing in the mud, and rolling on his back to get as filthy as possible....it was the most beautiful thing I've ever witnessed. God gave him his strength back for that day so the we could all cherish it forever.

We took him to our oncologist at 4:00 and we got to sit in this beautiful little sitting room with plants, couches and soft lighting...so it really felt comfortable and home-y. They let us sit in the room with him for a while and then put a catheter in his back leg and brought him back in. I got to press his sweet face to mine as he peacefully fell asleep and went anxiously to heaven. I keep picturing him with his little leg back, just running as fast as he can and doing all the things he used to before the (damn) cancer hit him.

My heart and my home are missing him immensely, so say the least, but I have to have some comfort in knowing that he doesn't hurt anymore and that I surely will get to hug and kiss my beatiful Catfish when the time comes. I also take comfor in knowing that some of your sweet babies greeted him when he arrived and he made some instant best friends.

Again, thank you all for being so wonderful and for truly letting me know how much you care. You, too, have a special place in my heart.

Much love,
Jessica
